What does everyone think about naming a baby boy Marnie? Is it just for girls? Opinions 😊

What about mannie? I know a young boy called mannie. He’s quite a cool kid

Mamabear88 · 16/02/2020 16:58

Nope. No matter how you spell it it's a girl's name.

Costacoffeeplease · 16/02/2020 17:02

Might as well call him Sue and be done with it

Letthemysterybe · 16/02/2020 17:04

I wouldn’t.

What about
Marley
Riley
Ferdie
Ashley

AlanRickmanFanClub · 16/02/2020 17:04

How is it any different from the current fad of giving girls boy's names.

I don’t like that either.

Strugglingtoquit · 16/02/2020 17:07

It’s no different from the fad of giving girls boys names, both are equally horrible!

hauntedvagina · 16/02/2020 17:09

It's a Marno from me.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 16/02/2020 23:57

Marnie is a girl's name and isnt it short for something? I'm not a fan of it even on a girl really.

What about Martin? It's such a handsome name! And you can do Marty which is very nice!

Jossina · 16/02/2020 23:59

I think there's no problem with the whole "girl name" thing, as girls are being called "boy's names" all the time. And it has a nice ring. Especially spelled Marney.

MadamePewter · 17/02/2020 00:00

No

katy1213 · 17/02/2020 00:18

You could call him Lucy if you wanted, but I really wouldn't. When people try this hard to choose a name that's 'different,' I always wonder if they suspect that their child will otherwise be extremely ordinary and an all-round non-achiever. Somehow Deliveroo driver Marni sounds so much more likely than Prime Minister Marni. Give the kid a chance!

mathanxiety · 17/02/2020 00:47

Marmaduke, nn Marmie?
Just skip the middle man and call him Smarmy..

Poorolddaddypig · 17/02/2020 06:11

Marmaduke 😂😂😂 only on Mumsnet

KatherineJaneway · 17/02/2020 06:12

It's a girls name. Just no.

Poorolddaddypig · 17/02/2020 06:14

Also girls being called a boys name is more socially acceptable at the moment. It’s like a fashion. It shouldn’t be any different, but it IS. Regardless of whether it’s right or wrong, it is okay socially to call a girl a boys name but not vice versa. I agree with those of you who say it’s not fair. BUT do you really want to try to break this social norm by naming your son a girls name and having him have to cope with the inevitable teasing that will come with that? Personally I’d rather accept that it kind of sucks but society is still pretty sexist so I can’t name my son a girls name ... then name him a girls name and have him bullied and resent me for his whole life.

AJPTaylor · 17/02/2020 06:37

Don't. Poor child.
Listen to "A boy named Sue" and give your head a wobble"

pilates · 17/02/2020 06:41

No

december20100 · 17/02/2020 07:56

Don't be so cruel, even with your made up spellings.

Whatsyourflava · 17/02/2020 08:45

“How is it any different from the current fad of giving girls boy's names.”

@AlanRickmanFanClub @Strugglingtoquit

It’s because we live in a patriarchy. A girl being called a tomboy or being called Charlie or Rory for a girl is “cool”.

A boy being called “Emma” on the other hand is practically illegal and seen as a demotion. “Don’t be such a girl” is an innocent I’ve heard chucked about many times by fathers to their sons.

Patriarchy still alive and kicking

Byets · 17/02/2020 11:25

Just need to say one thing, been keeping very quiet through this whole thread. But when I have people commenting so unnecessarily rude 'don't be so cruel' 'give your head a wobble' 'give him a chance' because he's more likely to be an Uber driver and I think he's going to be a basic non achiever??? Lol.

Really?

People implying that I'm going to be a cruel, bad mum because I've posted a thread on mums net asking opinions on calling my boy Marnie... get a grip 🤣

And this is not aimed at people who have solely given their opinion of no, that's fine. It's aimed at people with the unnecessary comments on top.

@Costacoffeeplease what's your problem lol. Don't understand people who feel the need to make horrible comments on people's posts. It's embarrassing 🤷‍♀️

How about Marner ( as in Silas Marner)? Could then be Marnie for short.
