Well we are expecting a boy and have been up about down with names. He's due in a months time
So far we like

Jeremiah

Kobe ( not really after the late basketball player but since it's been in the news we thought, nice name)

Kian ( I'm worried how people will pronounce this)

What do you think ?

I really like Jeremiah.

Kobe to me is either Kobe Bryant (which is a somewhat problematic link) or Kobe beef, which is just weird.

I would pronounce Kian like Key-ann. It's not my favourite.

farmertom · 09/02/2020 21:49

If you really want honest opinions

Jeremiah - I think it's ok, a bit Amish sounding, not my favourite but if you love it go for it.

Kobe - I think it's awful. Also pretty problematic link as PP said and everyone would assume you named him after the basketball player.

Kian - I really like the name. Would pronounce it Key - un / Key - an - slightly different spelling to the Irish Cian

user1493494961 · 09/02/2020 21:50

Jeremiah is OK, the other two aren't.

CodenameVillanelle · 09/02/2020 21:50

Kobe the rapist?

momytokondi · 09/02/2020 21:59

@bridgetreilly Thankyou I really do like Jeremiah but the in-laws say it's too heavy and like someone's just said old and Amish
Yes the Kobe associations are awful aren't they
Scrape Kobe then
Kian Ild say Key-yan. I'm worried people will say Kai-yan (Kai like in kite)

Jeremiah sounds too contrived and trying to hard. How about Jeremy or Jacob?

Kobe I just think of Kobe Bryant.

We have a nephew called Kian primary school age he really suits his name.

Also DS secondary school age has a friend called Kian he is fairly academic but also works hard to improve himself he has also turned about to be a loyal friend and great motivator for DS so that is my favourite of your choices.

winewolfhowls · 09/02/2020 22:05

Sorry I think beef too.

Jeremiah is adorable

Samhradh · 09/02/2020 22:10

Use Cian?

Kobe is awful, and makes me think of pampered Japanese cows.

Jeremiah is old man chic (I have great-uncles and long-dead cousins on both sides called that) and probably due a revival. My only caution is what it would be shortened to — my relatives were known as Jer, Jerem (pron ‘JERR-um’) and Miah (‘MY-Ah’), none of which are appealing.

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2020 22:20

Kobe - Japanese city that’s had an earthquake in the early 1990s

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 09/02/2020 22:21

I can see Kobe as a nice sounding name maybe spelled Coby instead? The Kobe spelling is very Kobe Bryant for sure or kobe beef which is odd!

I prefer Jeremy over Jeremiah. I really like Gerard, Gerald or Garrett way more!

Kian is nice. Would pronounce it Key-an. Isnt that also pronunciation of Cian?

Cian looks nicer to me but Kian seems more phonetic. I love it either way!

PlantPotting · 09/02/2020 22:29

I know a coby

Loveislandlydia · 09/02/2020 23:03

I like Jeremiah. Definitely not Kobe

Etcni · 09/02/2020 23:07

Cian is the best option there - I think spelling it with a K a bit spiky and harsh to look at. I also think Kian wouldn't age so well for an adult man. There's lots of adult Cians here in Ireland so it doesn't seem like just a kid or teen's name to me.

DotBall · 09/02/2020 23:14

I hate Kian / Cian. I’m a secondary teacher and we have them pronounced variously Kye-an, Kee-an and See-an. Trying to remember which one is pronounced which way is a pigging nightmare.

eggandonion · 09/02/2020 23:18

We have a local Jacob, cover for short.

Samhradh · 09/02/2020 23:36

Cian is Irish. There’s only one way to pronounce it. KEE-un.

Jossina · 10/02/2020 00:31

Maybe Jedidiah instead of Jerimiah? I've never liked names that could be nn Jerry.

painintheholeSIL · 10/02/2020 00:37

What @Samhradh said. Whoever pronounces it See-an is an idiot.

momytokondi · 10/02/2020 10:33

@DotBall thanks I was looking for feedback from a school teacher 😂.
I would hate for Jeremiah to be Jerry (awful)
And I think Kobe is completely out now I've told DP.

I only like Jeremiah.

Astronica · 10/02/2020 13:43

I like Cian. Strongly dislike the others.

diddlediddle · 10/02/2020 17:42

Kian will definitely be pronounced Kye An by most people. It's quite a chavvy name, sorry to use the term.

Jeremiah is totally different in feel, really old world religious, not in a good way.

Kobe you've ruled out.

I think you need to go back to the drawing board!

NorfolkNellie · 10/02/2020 17:43

Love Jeremiah.
The others not so much.........

HumpHumpWhale · 10/02/2020 17:51

I have a Cian (I'm Irish but live in London) and people find it surprisingly difficult. It's just Ian with a C in front of it! Our surname starts with a K, though, which I think throws people off, as they don't expect it to be a hard C. We also get "key-ANN" a fair bit, which is the Iranian pronunciation. Kian, to me, is the Iranian version, not the Irish.

LowbrowVictoriana · 10/02/2020 17:56

Love Jeremiah. I knew one, NN Jem, which is lovely. Not sure the PP who described it as "contrived" knows what that word means... it's a real name.

I like Cian, spelt like that, and pronounced Key - in. But Kian is also quite nice.

Hate Kobe!
