Rowan is gorgeous, I used to train with a guy called Rowan though so I wonder if it's unisex?
Rowena?

glitterbiscuits · 09/02/2020 12:34

Cora is the traditional spelling
And Rowan is usually a boys name.

Whatsyourflava · 09/02/2020 12:40

Cora is a really nice name and much more unusual than all the a Rowan/Rohan/Roman’s about.
I’m not so keen on hyphenated first names but agree that Rowan is unisex and growing in popularity for girls. Over 100 baby girls called Rowan in England last year. It was top 100 name for girls last year in Scotland and didn’t feature on boys list there and popular for girls in US.
Seems like Roman (with an M) is gradually becoming the male version and Rowan the female maybe. It’s very popular though. If you add up all the Rohan/Roman/Rowan’s last year there were over 2,000. Whereas Cora there was only 336 and currently outside top 100
Kora there are even less - only 23! Outside the top 1000 names! Just depends what you’re looking for really @Kirsxlou

If you like Cora/Kora how about Cleo? If you like R names how about Roxanne/Roxanna nn Roxy

Kirsxlou · 09/02/2020 12:49

Cora with a C reminds of the name Coral which I’m not keen on, which is why I thought maybe Kora would work, middle name has got to be Rose as it’s my partners grandmothers name. My grandad was named Rowan but I have heard it’s a popular name for girls in the us. Not so common in the uk though, why I liked it

Either would be OK, I think Rowan is unisex now and Rose is a lovely name. I would lose the hyphen though with both, and spell it Cora if you choose this name. Kora is a bit downmarket.

Flymetothestars · 09/02/2020 12:57

Kora is a bit different
How about Willa or Jemima?
I like the Cora spelling too but then I like the name Coral
Seems to be so many threads on the name Rowan at the moment. Yawn. I prefer it as a girls name but I still wouldn’t pick it as it’s just so trendy and popular now. Don’t like nickname Row. I’m a teacher and all the Rowan, Rohan, Roman’s do make my head spin a bit so I wouldn’t pick it if you’re looking for something a bit different. Roman is fastest rising boy name. So it’s all a bit run of mill, same-y. Could be better as a middle name. But that’s just my opinion. Just depends what you’re looking for. xx

Kirsxlou · 09/02/2020 13:04

I was set on kora/cora Daisy for ages and then my partner tells me he wants her middle name to be Rose/Rosie and I’ve just been so thrown off And feel like I’m back to square one!

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 09/02/2020 13:08

I like Rowan-Rose. Ro-Ro as a cute baby nickname.

Kirsxlou · 09/02/2020 13:17

I wish there was a more girly way to spell Rowan without it looking odd, I’d still really like another name after Rose as her last name would be Carnall and I’m not sure Rowan Rose Carnall sounds quite right

OP posts:
DarkLikeVader · 09/02/2020 13:31

I know a small female Rowen- her parents picked that spelling as more feminine but I think she’ll forever be correcting people! I also know a Rowena. Prefer Cora though (spelt correctly) and without the hyphen which is awful.

Kirsxlou · 09/02/2020 13:35

Just to clear up I don’t want the hyphen in the name, it was more to emphasise the fact I wanted two middle names! And it was a name to come after Rose I was struggling to think off :)

MikeUniformMike · 09/02/2020 14:32

I don't like the Kora spelling. Not keen on Coral.

Cora is nice.

PlantPotting · 09/02/2020 14:51

Ahh right I see what you mean about the hyphen.
Kora is definitely more unique. I like spelling Cora too.

Sorry if I’ve already told you this @Kirsxlou, getting a bit confused, but anyway, my baby daughter is called Rowan by the way, so obviously I like the name. I knew it was unisex but like you I thought it might sound a ‘bit different’. What I’m a bit frustrated with myself about is that I never properly checked the name charts before registering her name (and I never came on Mumsnet for advice). I feel like a right plonker sometimes. Had I realised how trendy it is for both girls and boys I probably wouldn’t have picked it to be honest. I hadn’t appreciated that Roman (with an M) has come from nowhere to be fastest rising boy name and obviously 🙄.... there’s 2 Roman’s at my small local nursery and the names do all get muddled so when I phone i usually say “I’m phoning about Rowan with a W”. It just depends if this type of thing bothers you or not. I know some people who wouldn’t care less but I worry I’ve chosen a name which isn’t special enough for my daughter. It’s not the end of the world of course. I think the YouTuber called Roman Attoward and Roman Kemp are going to keep propelling the popularity of Roman for some time to come unfortunately for me so I better just get used to it😫😆

One last point. What I also hadnt anticipated is that my (well meaning) family already accidentally shorten my daughter’s name to Row/Ro. I’ve asked them not to as I don’t like it but I guess it’s a taste of things to come once she starts school. I will pick a less trendy name next time that I like the nickname of!!

If you like R names for girls how about Roxanne (nickname Roxy) or something like that?

daisypond · 09/02/2020 14:54

Rowan is very nice. Cora, not Kora, is also nice. The hyphens make the name too much of a mouthful, though. Would you really say Rowan-Rose every time?

daisypond · 09/02/2020 14:55

Cross posted with your explanation of the hyphen

userabcname · 09/02/2020 15:35

I prefer Kora definitely. Kora-Rose (with or without the hyphen) is lovely.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 09/02/2020 15:42

To me Rowan is very masculine. I'm in the states and anything goes here but sometimes I'm like just please dont! But I like some names off the beaten path myself so who am I to judge?! ;)

I do like the significance for it for you and paired with Rose, it does give it a feminine twist! Its lovely but with double barreled names no one is going to use the full name so it will get shortened to Rowan.

So that said, Kora Rose is really stunning! They're both nice but I feel Kora works well with or without Rose. Rowan is not bad dont get me wrong but I love Kora Rose - that is very feminine and lush!

Kirsxlou · 09/02/2020 15:50

@PlantPotting yeah I’m not keen on row/ro but I do like Romy as a shortened version of the name, I love the name Roman but i just can’t vision it as a girls name :( I have thought about Rowanna & Rowena but I just don’t like them as much!
I really like how cora sounds and think it’s super pretty but not sure I like ‘Cora rose’ I feel it’s a little bit boring

OP posts:
Rachelhaydenberk1 · 09/02/2020 16:08

I think you have a better chance of the double barrel sticking with Kora Rose because both names are short. Rowan is a but mouth fully to pronounce so people aren't going to say Rowan Rose together all the time! I personally love Kora - I think either spelling is fine too. Like I said I like Rowan also but it is more masculine and I dont think the double barrel is going to stick but if you love it for a girl then you should absolutely go for it! It isn't bad!!

MadameJosephine · 09/02/2020 16:12

Cora is lovely. I think the other spelling will she her up for a life of telling people her name is ‘Kora-with-a-Kay’ though

I love Rowan too and quite like unisex names but if you feel it’s too masculine how about Ramona as an alternative?

PlantPotting · 09/02/2020 16:14

@Kirsxlou problem is that Romy isn’t a very natural nickname for Rowan so you could try and get it to stick but that might not work well once she gets to school and it’s inevitably shortened to Row instead, which is obviously the natural shortening as I know only too well 😫😆. How about the name “Roma” or “Rome” and nickname that to Romy? Sorry if these are bad suggestions. Just trying to think a bit more outside the box.

I know you’re saying “Cora Rose” feels a little boring but I think you need to forget about the “Rose” bit for either name and just focus on what first name you like because middle names rarely get used. All my best pals are from school and I honestly barely know any of their middle names even though I’ve known them for 20+ years.
Cora is outside the top 150 names so I’m surprised to hear you say you think it’s boring. Maybe you need to get back to the drawing board.

Like I say just focus on first names for now and take the name Rose (or any other middle name) out of it

bridgetreilly · 09/02/2020 16:16

Rowan Rose Elizabeth
Rowan Rose Emily
Rowan Rose Naomi
Rowan Rose Angelica
Rowan Rose Delilah

Cora Rose Jemima
Cora Rose Louisa
Cora Rose Amelia (not if your surname begins with P, though!)
Cora Rose Delphine

bridgetreilly · 09/02/2020 16:18

Cora and Coral are pronounced quite differently. Kora is awful.

I think Cora Rose is quite hard to say, especially if your little girl turns out to struggle with 'r' sounds. So I would make Rose the second middle name in that case:

Cora Jemima Rose
Cora Eleanor Rose
Cora Elizabeth Rose
Cora Delphine Rose

BadCatDirtyCat · 09/02/2020 16:21

Have you watched Legend of Korea? I'd highly recommend it (even though it's officially for kids). Korea is badass and an excellent role model.

Kora Rose or Cora Rose are both lovely.

(I'd lose the hyphen, but maybe that's just my middle class prejudice Smile)

BadCatDirtyCat · 09/02/2020 16:23

(and the first series, Avatar: The last Airbender, is great too)
