I'm quite fond of the name Romy for a girl, what do you all think?

Also, how would you spell it? Romy or Romi? Or another alternative?

Tinty · 07/02/2020 23:38

Romily Romy is a nickname

TeetotalKoala · 07/02/2020 23:39

Just makes me think of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. Which is a shocking film.

pearl20 · 07/02/2020 23:41

@Tinty yeah I'm not a fan of Romily. A girl I used to work with was called "Romy", I don't think it was short for anything - could be wrong though.

I'd spell it Romy. It's traditionally a diminutive of Rosemary.

Jossina · 08/02/2020 00:41

Sounds like a nickname.

Aquamarine1029 · 08/02/2020 00:48

I think it's ok. I know someone named Remi which I love because I admire her so much.

Astronica · 08/02/2020 02:01

I like it, on its own and as a short form for Ramona, Romilly or Rosemary/Rosamund. I like Romy spelling best.

Rosehip345 · 08/02/2020 02:41

I quite like Romy, never heard of it before. Not a fan of Romily though

Kim1010 · 08/02/2020 06:27

I thought it more a nickname ... different I suppose Hmm

It's cute, I like it.

Fine as a name on its own I think.

FernBritanica · 08/02/2020 06:39

@Kim1010 are you actively trying to be spiteful?

NoSauce · 08/02/2020 10:12

I think it’s pretty.

Chocmallows · 08/02/2020 10:15

Is it pronounced rom-e or roam-e?
I'm thinking rom-e, but not heard of it before.

NoSauce · 08/02/2020 10:26

Roe-me

stopshoutingd · 08/02/2020 10:30

I like it & know an adult Romy, not a nickname.

Take mumsnet opinions with a pinch of salt, your choice will be questionable for some if you veer away from anything ordinary.

IckleBear · 08/02/2020 10:36

I like it - Romy.
Remi is quite cute, too.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 08/02/2020 10:39

How are you pronouncing it? I know a Romy - said Rom-me.

It's unusual but not offensive.

pearl20 · 08/02/2020 10:59

@stopshoutingd thanks! To be honest, I don't know why I've posted it on here, I suppose it's down to wether I like it, not anyone else. However, I'm 37 weeks pregnant and hormones gets you thinking all kinds of names so I just wanted to be sure I wasn't completely losing my mind.

The spelling I would go for would definitely be "Romy". It wouldn't be a nickname, just that. The pronunciation would be "Roe-me".

Yes I know it spelt & pronounced like that.

I was born & raised in London to immigrant parents with an unusual but cultural name like many of my school friends, colleagues etc. It's a very international city & everywhere I've worked I've met someone with a name I've never heard before. It's really not a big deal.

BobbyBlueCat · 08/02/2020 11:17

I really, REALLY don't like it.

ballsdeep · 08/02/2020 11:19

There's a little girl who loves by be with that name. It's lovely and it's not common either . I'd go for it. Good luck xx

Sagradafamiliar · 08/02/2020 11:31

One of my favourites.

swansloveiceskating · 08/02/2020 12:56

Great choice, Op. I really REALLY like the name Romy. It's pretty, unique enough and a good international name. It's still fairly unusual here but more common elsewhere in Europe especially in France. Prefer the spelling with a Y at the end but the Romi is spelling is nice too - that one is more common in Israel.

@TeetotalKoala Romy and Michelle's high school reunion isn't terrible film. It's a quirky film about female friendship bit ahead of it's time feminist classic imo. Maybe give it another chanceWink

MikeUniformMike · 08/02/2020 14:04

Not keen - it's too nicknamey for me.
I don't like Romilly at all.
