Hi,

I'm due in a little boy in March. We already have an Isaac (if that helps)

After going through what seems like hundreds of names we have finally agreed on these two.

Rowan
Jude

I really like both, so having trouble making a desicion.

Which do you prefer and why?

Thank you mums x

Definitely Rowan. Much more masculine and strong.

Jude sounds soft and feminine, often short for Judy. I really don't like it much.

Jude is a girls name?! Always best to look at the statistics.

15 girls were called Jude in the UK last year compared to nearly 100 girls being called a Rowan! 7 times as many female Rowans.

Rowan is in the top 100 girls name lists in Scotland (and rapidly jumping up the charts there) but doesn’t feature in the top 100 boy name lists there.

Rowan is a unisex name. Jude is a boy name.

I’m not overly mad on either name so sorry @Cuckoome 😬

I would say that Roman/Rowan/Rohan/Roan/ Ronan is a bit bland. There’s 2 Roman’s in my NCT group. Locally I seem to be noticing that RoMan is slowly becoming the masculine version of the name (maybe because of the subtle difference in sound “Ro-MAN”) and Rowan the female version (maybe because of the sound “Row-ANNE”, with Anne being feminine). Not sure.

So I probably would pick Jude of the two (or pick Roman with an M), as I wouldn’t want to risk my son to be in a class with a girl of the same name. Sorry I know that’s really un PC of me. Boys names on girls seem to be “cool” but girls names on boys are practically illegal. (And I know it’s a unisex name but the girl numbers are increasing so I could see it flipping... at least with names like Robyn/Robin there’s different spellings for boy and girl so more easily distinguished).

Jude is actually now on a downward trajectory whereas Roman/Rowan are climbing dramatically year on year, especially Roman. You can view this here if interested:

Love Jude.
When I saw thread title I just knew one name was going to be Rowan(yawn).
It'll date badly and it's just not to my taste.
Love Isaac

The only Rowans I have ever met are girls.

Jude is the nicer of the two (although the school I went to he would have been beaten up for having a girl's name being called that too! I appreciate that was the shit school and it's pupils though, nothing to do with his actual name.)

I really don't like Jude. It sounds girly and is a nickname for Judith or Judy. It means Jew in German.

Rowan is a strong and internationally known name. I'd choose that. Rowan & Isaac are great together!

I think Isaac and Jude flows and reads better as a pair of brothers.

Jude.
I'm just not a fan of all the Rowans, Romans, Roans etc.

Jude is a great strong name. I don’t really understand people talking about Judy/Judith seen as no one is even called that anymore (less than 10 babies a year or whatever). Jude has always been a boys name of Latin origin meaning “praised” apparently, like that. Only about 10 girls named Jude last year- there’s probably more girls called David or Stuart 🤣
Rowan on the other hand is a traditionally unisex name that I’m not surprised to hear is gaining in popularity for girls now. I’m not so keen on inevitable nickname Row or its similarity to so many other increasingly popular top 100 names like Roman. I have a popular 80s name that’s very similar to another popular 80s name (think Lauren and Laura or Gemma and Jenna- type similar) so I’m particularly sensitive to similar names as it drives me mad people always getting my name wrong.

not jude. very negative associations of judas, and jude the obscure.

guess will have to be rowan. would not be my choice, but far better than jude.
the rowan tree is also known as the mountain ash, and flourishes in the north of England I believe, inc derbys. good luck.
