Is my daughters name awful?

I have a DD (no longer a baby) who is called Keira. I have seen threads about “K” apparently being chavvy and also threads discussing the spelling of this name.

I specifically chose this spelling for 2 reasons. 1 - I’m Scottish and it’s the feminine form of the boys name Keir. 2 - because although there are alternative spellings (Ciara and Kiera), this is the most commonly used spelling.

After reading the other threads, I just worry I’ve made a bad choice with this and that my daughter may some day be unhappy with her name.

Have I made a big mistake?

I think its lovely!

butwhateverfor · 05/02/2020 11:52

It's lovely. A normal name, doesn't seem to have dated or been a quick 'fashion'.

Yika · 05/02/2020 11:53

Lovely name - pretty and elegant.

AndaLuciAnn · 05/02/2020 11:53

Nothing wrong with Keira at all. It’s a lovely name. Not chavy.

Ninkanink · 05/02/2020 11:54

It’s absolutely fine.

EmmaC78 · 05/02/2020 12:03

It isn't to my taste but I don't think it is chavy at all.

LangClegTheBeardedVulture · 05/02/2020 12:04

Nowt wrong with it at all.

BrendasUmbrella · 05/02/2020 12:05

Just out of interest, why did you choose it because of the boys name? I don't understand that part.

MsTSwift · 05/02/2020 12:06

Hold firm. You can’t judge. I recently met an extremely grand elderly aristocratic gentleman named Gary

DimplesMcGee · 05/02/2020 12:07

I think it's pretty. It's not like you made it up! It's no Kaiydyn or Khloe...

Shinycat · 05/02/2020 12:09

@Queeenie WTF is wrong with Keira? It's a lovely name!

Some people are weird!

Karcheer · 05/02/2020 12:09

Since when has "K" been chavy? are there chavy and non chavy letters???

Elderflower14 · 05/02/2020 12:09

I love the name. I look after a little girl with the same name. My ds2 has an unusualish name. The year he was born only 14 other boys were born with the same name.
When I rang my mum from the delivery room to tell her, there was a terrible silence to the point I thought we had been cut off. There was some stuttering and she said she would have to get used to his name. I replied very firmly that yes she would and 23 years on she loves it and it's the 120 something most popular boys name!

LadyMadderRose · 05/02/2020 12:10

I like it, and I like the Scottish/Keir connection too. Not awful at all!

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 05/02/2020 12:10

Not chavvy at all. I'm Scottish and know a Keira. Keira Knightley's mum in Scottish too

leadbetter5 · 05/02/2020 12:12

It's only chavvy if you are!

Bluerussian · 05/02/2020 12:13

It's a lovely name.

'Keira is a feminine given name. It is an Anglicized version of "Ciara" and means "dark haired" in Irish Gaelic. People named Keira include: Saint Cera of Ireland, also spelled Keira, 7th-century abbess. Keira Knightley (born 1985), English actress.
Word/name: Gaelic
Related names: Kira, Ciara (given name)'

Nothing wrong with names beginning with K - unless you have a child you've named Krystal rather than Crystal.

BillieEilish · 05/02/2020 12:14

I love it Smile

Londonsuffolkmummy · 05/02/2020 12:14

It’s my name and not at all chavvy mine is spelt keirah

Stephminx · 05/02/2020 12:17

I suspect it’s due to all the kardashians people have said this ?

K names are fine. There’s nothing odd, embarrassing etc about your choice !

DobbyLovesSocks · 05/02/2020 12:17

It's a lovely name OP - not at all chavvy
My DS has a 'K' name, similar to your DD's and I am often asked how I spell it (I often have to refrain from rolling my eyes and saying 'correctly').

I saw a report today that said children named Oliver and Chloe are often ill-behaved. That's because lots of children have these names as they were the most popular names - bit like saying those with the surnames 'Jones' and 'Smith' are more likely to mis-behave [hmmm]

Riddleofthesands · 05/02/2020 12:19

I like it, I know 2 (one spelt the Irish way with a C who I was at school with a million years ago and one spelt with a K who is a teenager) and both were/are particularly great girls so I have good associations with the name. I don’t think it’s in the least bit chavy.

If you really are worried you can always start trying out her middle name. But honestly I think you are over thinking things, I would encourage your DD to love her name and be proud of your heritage. In my experience children love to know the story behind how you picked their name so I would build on that.

YouokHun · 05/02/2020 12:21

I loathe the “chav” word and the way smug people brand others and their choices with it. Keira is a fine name and if you like it that really is all that matters. The spotlight needs to be turned on the petty snobs who judge people by the name they were given.

Batmanandrobin123 · 05/02/2020 12:23

I love the name Keira. We are having our DS soon and deciding between Kieran and Keelan. I know mumsnet has a thing about K names but I'm not letting that put me off.

JRUIN · 05/02/2020 12:24

I think it's a lovely name, and who the fuck decides if something's chavvy or not anyway. You like the name and that's all that matters surely.
