Is my daughters name awful?

I have a DD (no longer a baby) who is called Keira. I have seen threads about “K” apparently being chavvy and also threads discussing the spelling of this name.

I specifically chose this spelling for 2 reasons. 1 - I’m Scottish and it’s the feminine form of the boys name Keir. 2 - because although there are alternative spellings (Ciara and Kiera), this is the most commonly used spelling.

After reading the other threads, I just worry I’ve made a bad choice with this and that my daughter may some day be unhappy with her name.

Have I made a big mistake?

Not to my taste but you like it so that's all that matters. It's not a name to raise eyebrows in any way.

Cheesecake53 · 05/02/2020 11:26

I really like that name and prefer the K to the C.

Chickenitalia · 05/02/2020 11:26

It’s a perfectly nice, normal name! Loads of names have different spellings that are all equally valid so don’t fret about that. She will have to spell it out more than once, that’s normal, my name has only 1 conventional spelling and I’ve still had to repeat and correct over and over!
Chavvy is such a horrible word. If you take it to mean tacky or low class, I don’t think Keira is at all.
Enjoy your baby and don’t give this another thought.

Lucindainthesky · 05/02/2020 11:27

Perfectly nice name and not chavvy

MindyStClaire · 05/02/2020 11:27

When people make snobby comments about "K" names, they're talking about things like Khloe - names traditionally spelled with a C but changed just to be different. Those people wouldn't be judging someone for using Katherine or Kathryn rather than Catherine! Keira is the same IMO.

TalaxuArmiuna · 05/02/2020 11:29

nothing wrong with the name Keira. perfectly nice name and no particular connotations of class imo. stop worrying and use the name you like.

Wasail · 05/02/2020 11:31

MN hated my DSs name for a long time but seems to love it now Confused.
There are some truly rude posters on baby name threads, try not to let it bother you.
Kiera is a lovely name.

kiki22 · 05/02/2020 11:32

I love Keira if I had a girl it would be my first choice its lovely. I have a K name and so does ds2 I've found the people who judge my name choice I wouldn't dream of using any of their suggestions.

Keira is beautiful feminine without being girly and will age well. Don't doubt yourself.

BennytheBall · 05/02/2020 11:35

It’s fine. I know a Kiera and a Ciara.

I think it’s Kai, Kyle and Kayden that are perceived as the ultimate chav names on MN, not all K names.

Nearlyalmost50 · 05/02/2020 11:37

Keira is a nice name, I don't think this is what people have had in mind when slagging off K names like Khloe.

Even though mumsnet may not approve, anyway, the Kardashians have made billions of dollars having recognisable branded 'K' names.

Keira isn't in that category, I like it, as someone said it's like being called Katie, it's a pretty name you can't take offence over.

Naomh · 05/02/2020 11:38

It's grand. I'm Irish, so our correct version is 'Ciara', but obviously I'm aware of the Scottish variants. And @MindyStClaire is right about why some posters are rude about names beginning with 'K' -- they're talking Kaycee, Kaydee, Kaylee etc.

AutumnRose1 · 05/02/2020 11:38

I think it’s lovely

You saw criticism on threads here? No name is acceptable here.

Seahorseshoe · 05/02/2020 11:40

No you haven't made a mistake. You love it and that's all that matters. I haven't heard of it being chavvy.

HalfBiscuit · 05/02/2020 11:40

I love it, I don't think it's chavvy at all.

It makes me think of Kira in Dark Crystal.

GertieGumboyle · 05/02/2020 11:41

It's not a name I'd have chosen as I go for names that are a bit of an acquired taste (and are regarded as 'posh' on MN) - but it's pleasant and completely inoffensive in every possible way. Not chavvy at all, and absolutely not a name your DD would ever regret having been given.
I've never heard of names beginning with K being chavvy per se. What about Katherine? Hardly chavvy...

ShellsandSand · 05/02/2020 11:43

I love it. Was gonna name my DD2 after her Dad (Kieran)

MummyJasmin · 05/02/2020 11:43

When I think of Keira I think of Keira Knightley and the Chanel ads....def not chavvy at all!

believerinhope · 05/02/2020 11:44

My name is Kira - Spelt differently I know, but I hardly know anyone with the same name. The only girl I remember with the same name went to a very posh private school- so don't suppose it is chavy! I personally like it, but maybe I am biased ;)

silverwings · 05/02/2020 11:44

My 15 year old daughter is called Kiera. I think it's a nice name. The older members of my family had trouble getting to grips with it to begin with lol

CoraPirbright · 05/02/2020 11:45

I will admit straight out that, although I try my hardest not to be....and would never dream of letting on........I am privately rather snobby about names.

Having said that, I have never heard of Keira being considered ‘chavvy’ and as a name I think its rather lovely.

maras2 · 05/02/2020 11:45

I like it and the male version.
DS's middle name is Keir. He's nearly 40, so not a modern, trendy name. Smile

eggandonion · 05/02/2020 11:48

Ciara with a C was massively popular where I live 20 years ago. Having said that, I have no idea how most of the Ciaras I know spell their names! I didn't consider it as we already had cousins called Kieran (IT person) and Ciaran (college lecturer), so spelling hasn't held them back!

ddl1 · 05/02/2020 11:48

I like the name! There may be problems with people not knowing how to spell it, but that is true of many names.

norealshepherds · 05/02/2020 11:50

Definitely not chavvy!

runrabbitrunrunrun · 05/02/2020 11:51

It’s lovely. Stop overthinking it!
