Thoughts on Thor, Rory, Ralph

What are everyone's thoughts on these names for a boy? I like Rory but my OH isn't keen. I liked Ralph a lot but hadn't realised it's an expression for being sick so that put me off a bit. Also I've seen 2 people on my social media name their babies this fairly recently and I'd rather avoid any names that might become the next popular top 10 names etc.

We both liked Thor but then after googling it I'm concerned it might give him too much of a reputation to live up to? I never thought of it in this way but don't know if other people will and find it funny if he grows up to be quiet and sensitive rather than loud & boisterous etc. Trouble is I'm really fussy with boys names (want something simple but unusual) and have already looked through the top 1000 on one site and didn't really like any of the others 🙈

Are you in the UK? Thor might be hard to live up to - people might think you're just an Avengers fan.

AfterSchoolWorry · 26/01/2020 14:00

Thor is great!

Rory is wet and Ralph just reminds me of that kid from the Simpson's!

diddlediddle · 26/01/2020 14:01

I really like Thor and personally think most people will forget about the association pretty quickly. However other options I like are Torin and Torbin - both give nn Tor which is very cute and doesn't have the same connotations.

Rory is nice but a bit more mainstream? Agree Ralph is a bit more of the moment.

RockinHippy · 26/01/2020 14:03

Rory is a common dogs name around here, so I'd avoid that one.

Others both nice, though Thor is nicest to me. I know 3 of them, on,y one is under 30

Sorbet18 · 26/01/2020 14:17

I think Thor seems the best choice and the only one me and my partner both like so that's a good start! I live in the uk and haven't seen the avengers. Sometimes I live in my own little bubble and am oblivious to stuff like this, so want to get other people's opinions before naming him something that might have bad connotations to it.

You can spell Rory Ruairi pronounced slightly differently.. I prefer names like this. We also have a Rori for a girl in our family.

MrsJoshNavidi · 26/01/2020 14:48

Not Thor!! Shock

What if he turns out to be a skinny wimp?!

PenguinsOnParade · 26/01/2020 15:11

There are some longer Thor names like Thorin, Thorfinn and Thorstan/Thorsten which I think sound a bit more usable than just Thor. Or the Tor- ones like a PP mentioned.

goodgodingovan · 26/01/2020 15:35

I doubt people will forget about the Thor connection any time soon. He's a Norse god and has been around for a very long time.

Whatsyourflava · 26/01/2020 16:19

Yeh Thor is a bit of pressure! I think it’s easy to assume your son is going to be the coolest in school but statistically that’s actually unlikely. A spotty skinned teenager called Thor isn’t great

I agree that maybe Rory or Ralph aren’t the best options if you’re wanting a more unusual choice though but I really like both those names

How about Tristan? Chester? Casper? Eli? Barnaby? Christopher (Kit)? Nathan (Nate)? (All those names are rarer than Ralph and Rory)

Strugglingtoquit · 26/01/2020 16:31

Definitely not Thor!

Even if the Avengers association disappears tomorrow (highly unlikely for such a massive franchise) it’s still a Norse god with strong associations

I really like Rory and it’s far and away the best of the three

MrsBertBibby · 26/01/2020 17:18

Torin. Great name and no baggage
Conrad
Robert

Newmetoday · 26/01/2020 17:23

Thor is a stupid name. If a celebrity called their child Thor, they’d get ripped to shreds

Poppydaisies · 26/01/2020 17:39

I like Thor and Ralph.

Dislike Rory. It's got 2 Rs and some people struggle to pronounce them!

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 26/01/2020 18:18

Thor is a little much. Have you considered Thorton - it's a bit more subtle I feel. Also I love Odin which is a god name but not as well known.

Rory is great!!!!

Ralph is kinda blah to me but I like Raphael a lot!

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 26/01/2020 18:21

What about Troy? Thorish but not too much.

MamaDane · 26/01/2020 18:24

Love Thor, but then again I am Danish. Also it's not too big a name to live up to, people name their daughters Freya/Freyja/Freja all the time and she's also an actual God. Plenty of skinny, short Thors in Denmark too. Don't worry too much about that.

I also like Rory but could never name our kid that as it's impossible for a lot of Danes to pronounce lol.

Ralph is not nice imo.

xQueenMabx · 26/01/2020 18:31

I like Rory best out of those options.

MikeUniformMike · 26/01/2020 18:42

Thor - Yes!
Rory - yes
Ralph - no

Ellmau · 26/01/2020 19:05

Thor would be fine in Scandinavia where there are lots. Here, the reference is mainly Chris Hemsworth.

TatianaLarina · 26/01/2020 23:13

(I like the name and had a cat called Thor, but I don’t think I’d call a boy that in the U.K.)

Astronica · 27/01/2020 03:58

I like all 3. I'd prefer Torin or Torben though over Thor though. And even though I like Ralph I prefer Rafe or Rufus.
