I just wondered for anyone called Charlotte, (or knows of any), which shortened version do you/ they go by?
Having a Charlie/ Lottie debate.
OH prefers Charlie. I prefer Lottie.
Trying to figure out which is most popular, or do you find that people call you one or the other regardless of the one you choose to go by?

I know several lotties. I far prefer the full name - it’s only 2 syllables ! And very pretty. I Iike Char (soft ch).

Whatsyourflava · 21/01/2020 12:05

Of the Charlotte’s I know (all adults)
2 called Lottie
1 called Charlotte
1 called Charlie

Rachel345 · 21/01/2020 12:06

Most go by their full name.

Otherwise Char, Charlie are the most natural shortenings as the emphasis of Charlotte is on the first syllable, Char.

Gizlotsmum · 21/01/2020 12:07

I know 2 Charlotte's mine is Lottie the other is Charlie.

MollyRoisin · 21/01/2020 12:08

The teenage one in my family goes by Charlotte or Lottie.

BronteSisters · 21/01/2020 12:19

I have a Charlotte and we only use a nickname as a joke. We call her Chazza. I think certain classic names are so much prettier in full. Charlotte, Victoria, Elizabeth and Alexandria for example.

We had intended on shortening to Charlie and Lottie was a consideration too but she's always been a Charlotte. And on rare occasions, Char (Shar).

Rachel345 · 21/01/2020 13:11

I agree - Charlotte sounds pretty.

Shar, Charlie or Lottie don't. I honestly wouldn't shorten it. It's so easy to say in full!

BelfastNonBlonde · 21/01/2020 13:14

My sister is Charlotte. Beautiful name. It has (thankfully) never been shortened.

We sometimes call her Char just in the house or in messages, but thats about it.

Not all names need to be shortened. They are given beautiful names for a reason. I would avoid shortening.

Can you both call her Charlotte as standard, with your preferred shortening as your own pet names? That's what my parents did with my (similar style) name and it worksSmile

Gizlotsmum · 21/01/2020 13:17

@Joannemum1234569 because a name makes someone bitchy?

golddustwomen · 21/01/2020 13:18

I'm Charlotte. I go by Charl, which I love. Hate when people call me char. Have never gone by Charlie or lottie, wouldn't mind Charlie but lottie makes me cringe.

IvinghoeBeacon · 21/01/2020 13:18

Can’t you use different nicknames? My dad uses a different shortening of my name, my husband and friends another, my mum uses my full name, i rather like it.

@Joannemum1234569 how does a name make someone bitchy? Surely their actions make them bitchy not their name? You may know a bitchy Lottie... Doesn't mean she wouldn't have been a bitch called anything else.

IvinghoeBeacon · 21/01/2020 13:23

Gizlotsmum The trolls will be deleted shortly, ignore

Pipandmum · 21/01/2020 13:24

My niece is Charlotte and everyone calls her...Charlotte. Her mother calls her Char occasionally.

Themountainsarecalling · 21/01/2020 13:29

I have a Charlotte

She insisted on being called her full name when little, but went by Charlie fairly early on. She absolutely hates Lottie. We all call her Chuck now as well and it actually really suits her (but we are in the US so it's a more common nickname anyway, even if usually for men).

PermanentTemporary · 21/01/2020 13:31

I prefer Lottie but clearly I'm in the minority!

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 21/01/2020 13:51

Charlotte is gorgeous. I know:

  • a couple of Lotties - one is 7 and one is at uni.
  • a couple of Charlies, one in her 20s and one in her 30s
  • three Charls (pronounces like 'Sharl') all late 20s

So it's pretty evenly split! One of the Charlies has never been Charlotte, only ever Charlie unless she needs to write her full name. Same for the Lotties. The other Charlie and the Charls are all either Charlotte or nickname interchangeably.

Rachel345 · 21/01/2020 14:01

Lottie sounds nothing like Charlotte. It sounds like twee version of Lotta.

Charlotte is a lovely name that is easy to say, only 2 syllables. It really doesn't need shortening. Possibly Char or Charlie if absolutely necessary.

Mamabear88 · 21/01/2020 14:10

I love the name Charlotte. Don't like any of the nicknames for it, which is what put me off it for our DD. Like others have said it's only 2 syllables, why does everyone feel the need to change names that parents have spent ages deciding on, it's so annoying!

Rachel345 · 21/01/2020 18:03

do you find that people call you one or the other regardless of the one you choose to go by?

People call her Charlotte if that's what she prefers. Or Charlie or whatever she likes best.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 21/01/2020 18:45

Lottie is not really an abbreviation. It's the same length.
