How would you pronounce...?

Joel.

With two syllables with emphasis on the first and a subtle change to the second - ‘Jo-ul’?

Or ‘Jole’ to rhyme with ‘sole’, ‘role’, etc.?

Jole

Marcipex · 19/01/2020 10:36

Two syllables
But I know one called Jole as in sole.

TheVanguardSix · 19/01/2020 10:36

Do you have to ask? Really?
It's Jole, obviously.
Watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for reference.

Two syllables Jo ell

roiseandjim · 19/01/2020 10:39

Jole

Starfish83 · 19/01/2020 10:39

Thanks for the helpful thoughts so far.

TheVanguardSix - I do indeed. Read this thread for evidence of the ambiguity around pronunciation! 😉

It’s two syllables. Jo-el. Jole is very odd - maybe it’s an American pronunciation. Never heard that.

DiegoSaber · 19/01/2020 10:45

Lol. There's always at least one person who just can't comprehend that names may have multiple pronunciations!

I would pronounce it exactly as your first description. Two syllables, but the second one very subtle.

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/01/2020 10:47

I’ve only ever heard it said Jole to rhyme with role. The pronunciation with two syllables suggested I’d think of being the female name Joelle

daisypond · 19/01/2020 10:49

The second syllable is subtle. It’s nothing like Joelle.

Gemma2019 · 19/01/2020 10:49

Jole, and I've never heard it with two syllables

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2020 11:02

Jole
but some will say Joe-el and some Joe-ELL

ParsleyPot · 19/01/2020 11:02

One syllable . Joel rhymes with hole.

Whatsyourflava · 19/01/2020 11:02

Yes it’s just one syllable, so the “Jo” bit has all the umph

I thought of another name for you @Starfish83 - Marley? Sorry if no good

StopMegxit · 19/01/2020 11:03

Jole

Never heard it pronounced Jo-el. Joelle is the feminine form.

Pipandmum · 19/01/2020 11:04

One syllable.

CoffeeRunner · 19/01/2020 11:06

Hope definitely.

I’ve heard Jo-ul locally (Midlands) but it sounds awful pronounced that way.

CoffeeRunner · 19/01/2020 11:06

Not Hope. Stupid phone!!! Jole!!!

DiegoSaber · 19/01/2020 11:09

The second syllable is unstressed and is ul rather than elle. So it isn't really anything like Joelle.

DiegoSaber · 19/01/2020 11:09

To me Noel is pronounced the same. Do other people say Nole to rhyme to sole??

Pixilicious · 19/01/2020 11:13

@diegosaber Yes Nole and Jole. Londoner here

Soubriquet · 19/01/2020 11:13

One syllable- jole

If it was 2, it would be Joelle for a girl
