Ewan Ieuan ??

I'm having an issue and only 6 weeks before my little one is due!
I've chosen the name Ieuan, yet now I'm having people query the pronunciation. I want to call him "Ewan" and just thought at the time that this was another way of spelling it. A number of YouTube videos later and I'm finding Ieuan pronounced "jauan"
How would you pronounce this? What other spellings could I use other than "Ewan"?

Euan?

FreezerBird · 07/01/2020 14:42

I've never known Ieuan be pronounced the same as Ewan?

I'm struggling to describe how I do pronounce it. It can be 'yay-ann' but the Ieuans I know would rhyme the first syllable with 'eye' rather than 'ay'. (Mid Wales).

What about Euan?

Dandelion1993 · 07/01/2020 14:43

If I'm honest, my first impression was that you'd try to spell Ewan and got some weird autocorrect.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 07/01/2020 14:47

Ieuan is a different name entirely - pronounced like ‘Y-eye-an’.

Ewan and Euan are pronounced ‘Yew-an/un’

ExCwmbranDweller · 07/01/2020 14:47

If you want to call him Ewan then deffo go with that spelling. Ieuan is the Welsh form of John and I'd pronounce it more ye-i-an. Also if you think he's ever going to live outside Wales don't bother because no one will ever get it right!

blackice · 07/01/2020 14:48

I would assume that any Ieuan I met

  1. was Welsh speaking
  2. pronounced their name roughly as "yay an"
dementedpixie · 07/01/2020 14:50

I have never seen the name Leuan before
I have a Ewan
Euan is the alternative spelling

KnickerBockerAndrew · 07/01/2020 14:51

As others have said, Yay-Ann. But tbh, if you're having to query the pronounciation of your own baby's name, I'd take that as a sign that it's probably best to go with something else.

Shouldreallybeworking · 07/01/2020 14:52

My husband is called Ieuan and he reckons only Welsh speakers can announce it properly! (But he is a welsh speaker!). As a non welsh speaker I pronounce it 'yay-an'. Unless you live in Wales, be prepared for no one being able to spell it or know how to pronounce it properly. And you will get different pronunciations between north and South Wales. It is a lovely name though although I may be biased!

KnickerBockerAndrew · 07/01/2020 14:52

Iwan is the Welsh form of Ewan, btw, and it's pronounced Ee-wan.

ballsdeep · 07/01/2020 14:53

Iwan can be for ewan too.
Ieuan and ewan are completely different names

Shouldreallybeworking · 07/01/2020 14:54

(Also be prepared for people mistaking the I for an L and calling him Leuan!)

HoneysuckIejasmine · 07/01/2020 14:54

I pronounce it Y-eye-an, where the first two syllables are merged so it's as if saying "eye" but with a Y at the start.

Are you meaning Ioan? (Yo-an)

I've seen Ewan and Euan as spellings.

titchy · 07/01/2020 14:56

Just spell it Ewan and save your kid years of misery. Perfectly good spelling of a perfectly good name.

dementedpixie · 07/01/2020 14:57

I took it as an L not I, sorry

jemi19 · 07/01/2020 14:58

Thank you all!
I was surprised to see so many replies (being new to this page I suppose!)
I am from North Wales myself.
To be honest it was the spelling "Ieuan" that caught my eye before realisation that this whole time I have been pronouncing it wrong!
My own opinion is that I want to get it right, not have a quirky name as sometimes they can just look like I've slammed my head into a keyboard.
I guess if I want to pronounce is "Euan" or "Euen" I will have to change my mind and also my partners (as I had also got him on the same boat.) If I was to pronounce it either "an" or "un" what spelling would I use?
and i thought naming a dog was hard...

Ewan or Euan. Why don't you want to spell it Ewan if that is how you what the name pronounced.? I don't know how I would proniunce Ieuan but probably with an L sound at the beginning so something like loo in but it depends on the origin of the name

LactatingWithRage · 07/01/2020 17:35

I went to school with an Ieuan 30 years ago. We all pn it You-an but quicker so like Ewan/Euan I guess.

LactatingWithRage · 07/01/2020 17:40

^ That was in the SE, I guess one of his parents or grandparents were welsh.

bridgetreilly · 07/01/2020 17:58

Iwan.

MikeUniformMike · 07/01/2020 19:24

Ieuan isn't Y-eye-an, but the 'eu' bit is hard to say unless you speak welsh. It's nearer YE-yann (still not right). Nice name.

Ieuan and Iwan, Ewan, Euan are all forms of John. As are Ian, Iain, Ioan, Ifan, Evan, Sean, Siôn ...

FWIW, Iwan and Ewan don't sound the same to me and neither do Ifan and Evan or Sean and Siôn

Google Translate says Ieuan properly.

The -an ending in Welsh names rhymes with can, pan, etc not sun or pun

JKScot4 · 07/01/2020 19:32

I have a Euan, there only is two spellings, it means of the mountain/noble, pronounced YEW IN; Euen is not the same name if it is a name 🙄
I chose my DC Scottish names to reflect our Gaelic history, personally don’t understand choosing names of specific origin if there’s no family connection.

MikeUniformMike · 07/01/2020 19:38

It is a nice name, not overused. Iwan is a middle aged person's name now and Iwan Thomas is well known.
Ioan is very similar and Ioan Gruffudd is well known.

Some welsh vowel combinations are dipthongs - they create a different sound and usually have no english equivalents

Iwan is pronounced YOO-ann
Ioan is YO-ann
but the 'eu' in Ieuan is difficult and you will probably get people saying it Y-eye-un.

If you don't speak Welsh I'd go with Ewan or Iwan.

I'm from N. Wales and mother tongue Welsh.

Petrichor11 · 07/01/2020 22:02

Definitely don’t spell it Ieuan and pronounce it Ewan!

If you want Ewan then spell it Ewan or Euan

Sal1977 · 07/01/2020 22:40

If you like the name Ewan, I would say spell it exactly like that.

My husband is Euan (pronounced the same) and he gets called Evan all the time, especially if someone is reading from a handwritten page or not paying attention.

Even the registrar called him Evan during our wedding service! 😆😆😆

Don't over complicate things. It's a lovely name. Keep it simple, your kid will thank you for it!
