boy name trouble

myself and DH have always loved the name Jack but have been trying so hard to think of something else because Jack is super popular.

We honestly can't find a boys name we love, if our baby is a boy. I'm feeling so stressed that we don't have a boys name but love our girls choices.

Should we worry about Jack being over popular or just use it because we both love it.

Other boys names we have thought of are: Murray, Ethan, Aaran,

If you like Jack just use Jack. Maybe when he is at school there will be another in his class but as soon as he gets out in to the wider world where there are people of many ages, nationalities etc he wont ne constantly meeting other Jack's.

tamarisk44 · 30/12/2019 19:45

I discounted so many names because they were too popular. Silly, isn't it. Jack is a super name for both a child and an adult. If you've found a name you both love then go for it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/12/2019 19:50

Jack is fabulous. Just use it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/12/2019 19:52

I don’t think Jack’s that popular now.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2019 19:52

The variety of names used now means that although it might be a top name, it doesn't necessarily mean that there will be 2 or 3 in your child's class.

My DSs are adults now but Jack was a popular choice even when they were babies. I know 2. One is a friends son, born a couple of years after my youngest and the other was in DS1s primary class. All those hundreds of kids we've come across through sports classes and scouts etc and that's it. DS2 has a relatively unusual name but I know 3 (with a different spelling).

I like Murray (Moray) and Arran (rather than Aaron) and Ethan is fine too.

Moominfan · 30/12/2019 19:53

I think jacks always been popular op. It's a timeless name.

PumpkinMun · 30/12/2019 19:53

thank you! honestly it just seems like so much responsibility to name your child. I've never wanted something to be so perfect in all my life. We are more than likely over thinking the name and probably should just go with our gut

I don’t think Jack’s that popular now.

Still top of the Scottish babies name list (12th year in a row). I suspect that OP might be Scottish given her other choices but obviously could be totally wrong :)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/12/2019 19:54

I think you’ll regret it if you don’t use it.

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/12/2019 19:54

Jack is a lovely name and yes it's popular in the charts but I actual no ofno Jack's under the age of 6. Then the o ky two child Jack's I know are 6 and 13

SmellMySmellbow · 30/12/2019 19:55

Love Jack. Don't know any little Jacks, and I know a LOT of kids.

CalleighDoodle · 30/12/2019 19:56

Jack is awful. How are you Pronouncing aaron?

PumpkinMun · 30/12/2019 19:57

we really like the name Aaran also, the meaning behind the name is "high mountain". It is a Scottish island and we both love hill walking and would love a scottish name, however we know someone who recently used the name. They aren't close to use more our parents but not sure if they'd feel offended

My uncle’s name is John, but everyone in the family calls him Jack for short Confused

SmellMySmellbow · 30/12/2019 20:00

That's a tenuous enough connection. Use it! I'm familiar with the Aaron spelling though

Thistle23 · 30/12/2019 20:01

I don't think Jack is overly popular , I only know of one Jack .

Murray is lovely sounding.

PumpkinMun · 30/12/2019 20:04

waxonfeckoff we are Scottish :) and would be lovely to have a Scottish name

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2019 20:12

@FrownPrincess, Jack is the traditional "shortening" of John. John F Kennedy for example was called Jack.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2019 20:13

Jack is popular but it's a lovely classic name.
You could give him a more unusual middle name which he could use should he want to?

My daughter goes by her middle name at college, and with people she meets now, she got fed up with no one being able to spell/pronounce her first name.
(She's Niamh Elizabeth, and now goes by Elizabeth)

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2019 20:14

I think if you love Jack then go for it. Your other options are also nice.

Other scottish suggestions:

Gregor
Keir
Ramsay
Findlay
Rory
James/Jamie
Andrew

FluffyEggsontoast · 30/12/2019 20:17

I think you should go for it with Jack. There’s none at my daughters school. You could end up picking a more unusual name (that you don’t like as much) and find there’s 2 in the class!

Why don’t you give “Jack” a more unusual middle name so he can always swop to that if he prefers when older! 2 members of my close family actually go by their middle names rather than first names (and interestingly the “middle names” that have become first names are the more popular safe names!!)

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2019 20:18

My friend has a Struan, which I love, also Hamish, or Angus

FluffyEggsontoast · 30/12/2019 20:18

Ps. Jack has actually been declining in popularity for the past 20 years:

FluffyEggsontoast · 30/12/2019 20:19
  • meant to add - so don’t assume everyone wants a unique name! The two family members that now go by middle names wanted a more mainstream name!
daisypond · 30/12/2019 20:21

You could call him John. Jack is the nickname for John. It’s more unusual than Jack.
