boy name trouble

myself and DH have always loved the name Jack but have been trying so hard to think of something else because Jack is super popular.

We honestly can't find a boys name we love, if our baby is a boy. I'm feeling so stressed that we don't have a boys name but love our girls choices.

Should we worry about Jack being over popular or just use it because we both love it.

Other boys names we have thought of are: Murray, Ethan, Aaran,

I have a jack who's 10. Still my favourite name ever and never been too many of them to bother me. Some of the more unusual names have ended up catching on and there be way more of them, when they were named to be unique.

PumpkinMun · 30/12/2019 20:23

we have a middle name for a boy ( family name ) so no matter what we go with we will have the middle name sorted :)
thanks for all the lovely comments it really has put my mind at rest and its also really nice to get feedback on my other name ideas!

Ps. Jack has actually been declining in popularity for the past 20 years:

Still the top boys name in Scotland

Go for it OP!

FluffyEggsontoast · 30/12/2019 20:34

@WaxOnFeckOff what percentage of babies in Scotland are actually called Jack?

Ollie is the number 1 name in England and statistically 1 in every 106(ish) boys are called Ollie/Oliver. I know more boys called Fox than I know of called Oliver!

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2019 20:40

The % wont be big Fluffy which is what I was saying earlier, however it's still very popular and has been at the top or near the top for the last 20 years. I still think you'd be unlucky to come across more than the occasional other one in any circle of contacts.

At one point though my DSs had 6 Tom/Thomas' in a scout troup of 24.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2019 20:44

It looks like it's around 1.6 - 2% over the last few years, out of about 26.5k live male births so, about 450 to 500 ish boys?

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2019 20:47

According to google there are about 5000 primary schools in Scotland - they will vary enormously in size but if we say on average each school will have 1 primary intake class per year, there is a 1 in 10 chance of there being a Jack in it? Maths isn't my strong point though so I may have done something wrong there.

Soawesome · 30/12/2019 21:52

My son is 15. When he was at primary school there were two Jacks in his class (also the only Jacks in the whole school) and two boys in his class with the same name that was super rare (not even in the top 500 the year they were all born). You can't predict the cohort they'll end up in. My daughter had 4 (yes, 4) Isabels in her class at primary school - there's not one in her whole year at secondary. DD has a name that was 12th in popularity the year she was born (we probably would not have picked it had we known; we'd not met one for years). She's never had another one in her year group.
A lot of it is just luck/chance. If you love it, go for it.

Mum of 3 ages 11,5 and 2, 2 year old in playgroup, I know of one child named Jack in one of my children’s school and one named Aaron in another of my children’s school just go for what you both love

FluffyEggsontoast · 30/12/2019 22:13

@WaxOnFeckOff thanks for working out the statistics! I find statistical very interesting but am rubbish at doing the calculations myself. xx

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/12/2019 22:21

Fluffy - the Scottish ones are particularly interesting as they don't cut off at 3 like the England and wales ones. So you can see where there has been only 1 child given a name. I think at most there have been 2 with DS2s name, same spelling in any year but most years there are none or 1.

Poorolddaddypig · 31/12/2019 07:07

Love Jack! Aaron was a naughty boy name when I was at school so that’s all I can associate it with - the naughty boys of the 90s! I don’t think it’s very nice. Jack is so sweet and classic and suits everyone at every age! REALLY don’t like Murray. Ethan is fine

justenoughjim · 31/12/2019 07:14

I dint know any Jacks but love the name. I'd use it.
