Tobias or just Toby

So I’m having my third boy in a couple of months and I’m still struggling to decide on the right name! Thank you to those who have posted on previous threads. I’ve still narrowed it down to Arthur or Toby/Tobias. I really like Arthur, as does DH, but it seems to be popping up everywhere. Popularity per de doesn’t bother me but to but this extent I’m not sure!
Also, I love the name Toby but I’m unsure whether to have Tobias on the birth certificate. He will overwhelmingly go by Toby with occasional use of Tobias if we put it on BC. Does anyone with a ‘formal’ name and a ‘day to day’ name find this annoying/confusing? Is there any benefit to having the ‘proper’ name on the birth certificate? Sorry for my ramblings, it was keeping me up last night!

I love it Tobias and think it's cool to have a more formal name and also a nick name

rosieposies · 29/12/2019 10:39

Sorry I've had no sleep 🤦🏻‍♀️

Twinkie84 · 29/12/2019 10:41

We have a Tobias. We loved the name!

dementedpixie · 29/12/2019 10:43

I dont like Tobias at all. If you want Toby use that

eveshopper · 29/12/2019 10:46

Give him the name you plan to call him. There is no point confusing the matter by naming him Tobias and calling him Toby.

I changed my name as soon as I could because I had one of the 1970's Jennifer/Jenny, Jacqueline/Jackie, Suzanne/Susie type names.

Never got called the 'long' version, always the shortened one so I am now officially the name I have always been called

Whatsyourflava · 29/12/2019 11:04

I’m the same @eveshopper - always used by the shorter version of my name and am glad that’s what I was registered as. Just makes everything easy

I love both Tobias Toby and Arthur

My favourite is maybe Arthur

meow1989 · 29/12/2019 11:22

I really like Tobias written down but saying it out load is sounding wierd to me for some reason (just tried it out to see if it went with ds name). I think with my accent (generally rp with a bit of north london) I would end up saying "tuh-bias" as I would feel a bit conscious of sounding a bit over enunciated otherwise.

Its a really nice name but it doesnt sound right coming out of my mouth for some reason. So I would go with Toby!

Clevs · 29/12/2019 11:49

We've got a Toby and before we registered him I asked my husband his thoughts on Tobias as an official name but he wasn't keen. My thoughts were that if he gets a responsible job when he's older like doctor, solicitor, prime minister (😂) etc. then Tobias might sound better, but at least he would have the choice.

We kept it as Toby as my husband didn't like Tobias, but now as a toddler who does everything at 100mph we jokingly call him Tobias in a stern voice when he's messing around getting dressed or trying to delay bedtime etc!

Ellecrawford · 29/12/2019 12:02

I'd personally 100% just go for Toby x

PlantPotting · 29/12/2019 12:09

Love arthur Toby and Tobias

tamarisk44 · 29/12/2019 12:13

We're going with the shortened version of our boy's name as we don't like the long version. My husband has a BC name and a short version he always goes by, and he was super cross recently when his work put his full name on business cards without asking him!

StanleyWalkersThirdWife · 29/12/2019 12:16

Toby! Prefer it to Tobias and I really dislike Arthur, but I dont like the whole old man/old lady name trend that has been having a resurgence over the past few years.

chocolatelimesaredelicious · 29/12/2019 12:31

Toby is nicer, but just to warn you that it is getting very popular round here in SE. I saw Tobias was one of the fastest-growing names in popularity in the last names list from the ONS. I say this mostly because you’re thinking of avoiding Arthur for similar reasons.
Go for it if you like it,but, if worried about it becoming super-popular, maybe go for something else?
Names that sound a bit like Toby: Joe/Joel/Rowan

Alsohuman · 29/12/2019 12:32

Mine’s just Toby, we figured it was pointless to give him a name nobody would ever use.

nowaypose · 29/12/2019 17:02

Definitely Tobias, I hate diminutives as given names.

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2019 17:29

Toby on its own is enough. If you aren't ever going to use Tobias just use Toby.
I know two - one is just Toby and the other one is Tobias but always called Toby.

Sorellax0x · 29/12/2019 18:40

I like Tobias. It can always be Toby for a nickname. I just see Toby as more of a cute little boy's name whereas Tobias sounds more grown up ! Toby is very cute though.

Roselilly36 · 29/12/2019 18:44

I much prefer Toby, not keen on Tobias at all.

user1493494961 · 29/12/2019 19:01

Tobias.

Nonnymum · 29/12/2019 19:02

I would go for tobias, then when he is older he can choose which he prefers. Tobias is a nice name too

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 29/12/2019 20:56

I have a 2 year old nephew tobias, so far he's tobes, not Toby, I have another nephew Thomas who I have never heard called anything but Thomas. I have Samuel but is always Sam. I don't think you need to worry about what it may sound like as prime minister, it's what you prefer and when they get to school they'll develop their own nickname

DramaAlpaca · 29/12/2019 22:24

Toby is a name in its own right, not necessarily short for anything, so I'd just go with that on the birth certificate.

Bluebutterfly90 · 30/12/2019 10:51

My DP is a Tobias, but gets called Toby day to day.
I think he appreciates being able to have the 'posher' version of his name as his legal name so that he can use it on things like his CV.
Also it helps him tell when he's in trouble, as that's the only time me or his mother call him Tobias.

I'd go with Tobias, because then you can use them both interchangeably. Wink

Bowerbird5 · 30/12/2019 10:58

Tobias

Then he can chose later which he is called. Love the name. Only taught one in 30 years of childcare.

blondie87 · 30/12/2019 11:25

Thank you for all your comments. It’s a big decision naming a person! We’re now adding William into the mix with the nn Bill as a nod to someone close to us. So it’s now:
Tobias/Toby
Arthur
William/Bill
