Tobias or just Toby

So I’m having my third boy in a couple of months and I’m still struggling to decide on the right name! Thank you to those who have posted on previous threads. I’ve still narrowed it down to Arthur or Toby/Tobias. I really like Arthur, as does DH, but it seems to be popping up everywhere. Popularity per de doesn’t bother me but to but this extent I’m not sure!
Also, I love the name Toby but I’m unsure whether to have Tobias on the birth certificate. He will overwhelmingly go by Toby with occasional use of Tobias if we put it on BC. Does anyone with a ‘formal’ name and a ‘day to day’ name find this annoying/confusing? Is there any benefit to having the ‘proper’ name on the birth certificate? Sorry for my ramblings, it was keeping me up last night!

Toby by far the best. You could use Tobin rather than Tobias if you like. Much nicer IMO.

redwoodmazza · 01/01/2020 09:18

Tobias with nn Toby.

blondie87 · 01/01/2020 09:47

What do people think of William? I’ve suddenly become rather fond of it!

William is a million times better than Tobias

tinseltitsandlittlegits · 01/01/2020 10:13

My little grandson is called William and he gets called will x
I was shocked when they named him as I thought they would use a more modern name but it really suits him x

Poorolddaddypig · 01/01/2020 10:14

Love Toby, hate Tobias

Poorolddaddypig · 01/01/2020 10:15

I really don’t like William at all. But Bill is quite cool

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 01/01/2020 10:15

My son has a longer, formal name and a shorter version he is known as, and it isn't a problem. I like that he has the option to use the formal version when he's older if he wishes.

crookshanksthecat · 01/01/2020 10:24

Toby is a lovely name. Not as keen on Tobias.
Arthur is ok a bit dull.
William is nice as well but I really don't like the nicknames, Bill, Billy, Will or Willy.

Toby is by far my favourite, just such a friendly sounding name.

Reallybadidea · 01/01/2020 10:48

Toby is definitely a name in its own right. I don't personally believe that people need a longer, more formal name in case they become a doctor/judge/ceo/whatever, because Britain is so multicultural and diverse, that people from all walks of life do those sorts of jobs now. I really don't think that your name influences your career these days.

MrsBertBibby · 01/01/2020 11:31

Really not keen on William. Very dull name.

Arthur is worse.

Toby stands in it's own right as a name, if you don't like Tobias, Tobin or Tobit. I'm normally quite keen on full name on the BC but Toby is fine. Great name.

Grufallisfriend · 01/01/2020 13:22

I like Tobias.

Not keen on William due to the Willi sound and teasing potential.

PlantPotting · 01/01/2020 13:52

I love the name William @blondie87

Clevs · 01/01/2020 14:16

I said earlier on in the thread that I have a Toby. Now you've added William into the mix I thought I'd post that my Toby is a Toby William!

Elisheva · 01/01/2020 14:26

I have a Tobias who is always called Toby, I also have a Charles who is always called Charlie. They both love having a formal name and an everyday name. I like that they have options as they grown up.

Mollie3 · 01/01/2020 15:48

Toby I didn’t consider because it starts with the sound ‘toe’
Sad but true 😳

blondie87 · 01/01/2020 16:30

Haha that’s an interesting criteria @mollie3!
I think we if we went with Toby we would just put that on birth certificate, so at least I’ve decided on one thing. Still can’t decide whether we’ll go with Arthur, Toby or William though 🙈

Arthur and William are very popular at the moment. Toby is less popular but not uncommon.

Whatsyourflava · 01/01/2020 23:26

@blondie87 you’ve chosen 3 lovely names there. Please come back and update us on which one you choose! People always forget to and I’m nosey and interested x

blondie87 · 02/01/2020 08:18

Much appreciate all the feedback- I’ve got about 8 weeks to go so will update then @Whatsyourflava! Any other thoughts/opinions welcome.

Ok so after done more researching I’m now adding Theodore and Elijah into the mix. So the final list is:
Arthur
Elijah
Theodore
Toby
William

What do people think?

OP posts:
Clevs · 03/01/2020 11:11

I still prefer Toby and William out of that list but then I'm biased! Depends on the surname as well and what flows well, although you may not want to tell us what that is!

Whatsyourflava · 03/01/2020 11:28

I love your list!!! @blondie87

Do you like the name Eli by any chance? I love it!

blondie87 · 03/01/2020 14:11

All ‘go’ with the surname- that was a big criteria.
@Whatsyourflava I love Elijah and Eli but DH isn’t 100% sure!
