Amelia or Amelie?

Hi everyone,
I’m due at the end of the month/beginning of January.

Which do you prefer Amelie or Amelia?

I used to previously always loved Amelie as I found it classy due to it being a long-standing royal European name, as well as associated with a classic movie and now theatre show.

But having some doubt on pronunciation difficulties and thinking of Amelia instead? But feel like it’s so overused....

Thoughts please!

Amelie.

Also this is how I pronounce the names:

Amelia: ah/uh- mee-lee-ya

Amelie : ah/uh-milly (emily with ah instead of eh)

I prefer Amelie.

I like Amelia but due to the number of baby Amelias, I find it a bit dull.

daisypond · 20/12/2019 13:38

Amelia, unless you are French. I don’t think Amelie is classy.

I love the sound of Amelia, but can't distance myself from the meaning (in medical terminology, it means "born without limbs").

ohmysoul · 20/12/2019 13:44

I prefer Amelia but I know one of each and both are lovely!

Tellmemaa · 20/12/2019 13:44

Amelia but both are so boring and overused. Sorry!

Tellmemaa · 20/12/2019 13:45

@theconstantinoplegardener is right!

PinkCrayon · 20/12/2019 13:45

Amelie

Expressedways · 20/12/2019 13:56

I love the name Amelie but I think most people would pronounce it how it’s said in the Audrey Tatou film: Am-il-ee. It’s quite a popular name and I’ve personally never heard your pronunciation which I think would likely be miss-heard as Emily. If you’re set on that pronunciation then I’d go for Amelia instead which is a very pretty name but just so popular and also tends to blur with similar names like Mia and Mila.

Amelia789 · 20/12/2019 13:57

My names Amelia and I was lucky to grow up before it was popular, I like Amelie I think it’s cute but maybe less so as an adult? I wouldn’t worry about pronunciation though if you like Amelie!

Winkywoop · 20/12/2019 13:58

How about Amelin?

PotteringAlong · 20/12/2019 13:59

Amelia.

Bluerussian · 20/12/2019 14:06

I looked up the meaning of Amelia and presume 'Amelie' is the same:

"What does Amelia mean?
A blend of the medieval names Emilia and Amalia. In Latin, it means "industrious" and "striving." Its Teutonic meaning is "defender." Well-known Amelias: aviator Amelia Earhart; title character in the Amelia Bedelia kids' book series."

Both good names in my opinion. No Amelia or Amelie will be embarrassed about their name when they go to school and that's what counts.

Starstruck2020 · 20/12/2019 14:11

I like the name Amalie. I think you should Spell it with an a not an e if you are going pronounce it that way.

PlantPotting · 20/12/2019 14:24

I love both

Slight preference for Amelia

bridgetreilly · 20/12/2019 14:38

Amelia

Amelie is pretentious.

firstimemamma · 20/12/2019 14:39

Amelie is my number one favourite ever girl's name but my fiancé doesn't like it so I'll never get to use it

Peachbubble · 20/12/2019 14:39

Amelie

pinkyredrose · 20/12/2019 14:41

Why not Emily?

MikeUniformMike · 20/12/2019 14:42

I don't like Amelie, and it seems past its best. Amelia is so overused.

Modernhistorybuff · 20/12/2019 14:45

I like them both but prefer Amelie.

Greggers2017 · 20/12/2019 14:50

My eldest is Amelie, pronounced Ah-mi-lee. We've only ever had complements about her name x

RoseMartha · 20/12/2019 14:58

My friend called her daughter Amelie and pronounce it
Am-il-ee
