Amelia or Amelie?

Hi everyone,
I’m due at the end of the month/beginning of January.

Which do you prefer Amelie or Amelia?

I used to previously always loved Amelie as I found it classy due to it being a long-standing royal European name, as well as associated with a classic movie and now theatre show.

But having some doubt on pronunciation difficulties and thinking of Amelia instead? But feel like it’s so overused....

Thoughts please!

Amelia makes me think of the medical term so I would pick Amelie.

Miahadalittlelamb · 20/12/2019 18:35

@Winkywoop i was considering Emmeline, but I prefer Amelie/Amelia to that

@pinkyredrose I feel that Emily is so....normal? It’s a nice name...but boring?

@Starstruck2020 worried that Amalie would be pronounced amaaal-lee (kind of like Amal clooney?)

It’s just so difficult to pick...

Emilia? Very similar, perhaps too similar.

daisypond · 20/12/2019 18:48

Camellia or Camille or Camilla? Melanie?

Amelia

Amélie is Aa meh lee (hard to render) not Ah milly. I’d go for Amelia on the basis that Amélie will be mangled in English.

MeMeMeYou · 20/12/2019 19:18

Amelie is v popular just now with Amelia less so (round my way anyway) if you’re looking not to meet too many others with the same name

Namaste6 · 20/12/2019 19:20

I like them both OP. Very pretty names. If I had to, I would lean towards Amelie. I does need to be pronounced carefully - as a previous poster highlighted. Soft and drawn with the middle e and not A-milly.

Nonameyet1 · 20/12/2019 19:50

Amelia out of those two but I do like Emilia spelling

Winkywoop · 20/12/2019 20:11

Emmeline is lovely. I do prefer that to Amelin, but suggested that because it s more similar to Amelie and Amelia!

Also like pps suggestion of Camilla. In fact I prefer it to Amelia and Amelia

Bluewavescrashing · 20/12/2019 20:15

Amelie.

There are 1000s of Amelias round!

NameChange30 · 20/12/2019 20:28

I love Amélie but I'm a fluent French speaker with a French DH so it wouldn't be weird for us to use it. Not sure that I'd use it otherwise.

I'm not a fan of Amelia for some reason.

Bluerussian · 20/12/2019 22:11

Emilia is a quite different name to Amelia, it's Italian and has a different meaning.

I do like the name, Emilia.

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 20/12/2019 22:16

I teach a handful of both and struggle to remember which are which tbh. I'm not a fan of either. Far too popular round these parts

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 20/12/2019 22:17

Amelie is cute. Also love Natalie and Rosalie....

NoFun21 · 20/12/2019 22:18

Amelia. Amelie has been done to death.

Astronica · 20/12/2019 22:50

I prefer Amelie.

Miahadalittlelamb · 21/12/2019 08:49

Thanks all
I actually really like Camilla...but think it’s a bit marmite...don’t think I can pull it off.
