What’s popular for babies?

IRL what’s popular in baby groups etc? Am currently TTC dc2, not so interested in older kids names but more babies.

I find the charts quite misleading, my daughters name is in the 20s/30s and I’ve encountered a few. More than the actual top 10names. Just would be helpful to know :)

Arthur, Ava, Amelia, Lily, Isabella, Poppy, Theodore, Isla, Ada. Basically any girls name beginning with A!

mamablondie · 17/12/2019 18:14

Arthur is a strong contender for us!

I think there’s a big variation in names, depending on where you live, your social circle, etc. I know babies called things like Daphne, Barbara, Sybil, Hamish, Peter, Vincent.

Showmeyourhero · 17/12/2019 19:16

Noah, Oliver, Teddy, Harrison, Isabella, Olivia, Annabell, Isla, Evie, Eva.. There's so many in DC's Pre-school!

Sexnotgender · 17/12/2019 19:24

Boys in my baby groups are:
Ezra
Reuben
Noah
Harvey
Luca

Girls are quite few and far between! It’s boy central in my group!
The few girls I know are:
Emma
Maria
Beth

daisypond · 17/12/2019 19:25

Lots of names mentioned above are the names that were used over 20 years ago - the names of my DC friends - some of whom are having their own children now. They would see them as dated now for a baby. They are 20-something names.

IVflytrap · 17/12/2019 21:31

George, Charlie, Jenson, Jackson

Sienna, Evie, Ava, Isabelle/a, Alba, Summer

NobdieTheNob · 17/12/2019 21:33

Why, just why, would anyone call a human being Jaxon??? Jaxon the Klaxon? WTAF?

hazandduck · 17/12/2019 21:35

Lots of Evies, Islas, Teddies, Harrisons.

Met a Merlin the other day which I had never heard, and liked it!

Adelais · 17/12/2019 21:38

I don’t know a lot of babies but the babies I know born this year are called; Iris, Jemima, Evelyn, Isabelle, Alexander and Erik.

PlantPotting · 17/12/2019 22:07

There’s been 2 very recent threads on this exact topic @mamablondieb

One thread for girls and one for boys so maybe look there

PlantPotting · 17/12/2019 22:11

Are you trying to avoid popular names @mamablondie - I’m trying to understand your purpose behind the thread.
I’ve met more Matildas than Olivia’s locally to me but it doesn’t mean that olivia isn’t still the number 1 name

The Office National Statistics have produced lists of name data split into different regions of the UK so you could check there

thenightfury · 17/12/2019 22:11

I know lots of Harlows, Noah's, Amelia's and Eva's/Evie's/ Edies

thenightfury · 17/12/2019 22:12

I see Isla is very popular on Mumsnet, but I don't know a single one. It's my girls name should I fall pregnant with one

VaselineHero · 17/12/2019 22:56

In my baby group

Ava
Sophie
Sofia
Laura
Aurora
Emma
Heidi

Frank
Kaiden

I totally agree with this Grin. It’s unfortunately quite popular. I thought Jackson was bad enough but the x takes the piss.

Jayden is still doing the rounds too and Noah, think Logan is still popular as well.

NobdieTheNob · 17/12/2019 23:13

Jackson would be bad enough, but Jaxon is on a different planet of awfulness.

It's even worse than Jayden. It says it all, when Logan starts to sound verging on reasonable.

TildaTurnip · 17/12/2019 23:19

A names (Arthur, Arlo, Amelie, Amelia, Ava)
E names (Emily, Eva, Evie)
I names (Isla, Isabelle, Imogen, Isabella)
O names (Olivia, Olive, Olivia, Oscar)

But not U names!

Also names ending in vowels, especially ‘ie/y’ and ‘a’

So Emily/Amelie/Amelia end up sounding used a lot because they’re similar.

Expressedways · 17/12/2019 23:26

Ha my colleague just named his baby Jaxon. American though, so perhaps that goes some way to explain it?! I can’t say I have anything positive to say about it.

Most of the british babies I know are called Arthur, Albert, Edward/Theodore/Teddy, Amelie/Amelia/Mia/Mila, or Eva/Eve/Evie/Ava.

mamablondie · 18/12/2019 08:27

@PlantPotting so in 2018 with DD1 her name was declining in popularity so I didn’t expect to encounter that many. There was one other at every BF group/baby sensory etc and she’s one of two at her nursery. I love her name and don’t regret it but we deliberately avoided the UK top 10 for that reason.

The irony being that I’ve not encountered too many Sophias, Avas etc. So it’s just helpful to know what’s actually around x

@PlantPotting oh and also our surname is very common (dare I say boring?)

TreesoftheField · 18/12/2019 08:33

Eliza
Vivienne
Teddy
Marnie
Freya
Kit
Ellis
Sophie

PlantPotting · 18/12/2019 08:38

Ok understood @mamablondie

I’m not sure these responses will help you all that much then as we are all based in different regions of the country try. If you go to office national statistics and look at the top 100 for your own region maybe you will find the name you picked is higher up the charts in your part of the uk than the uk as a whole and that’ll help explain why you’ve come across so many more than you were expecting

I also find the same thing by the way. I live near 2 little boys called Fox (which is waaaay outside the top 100) but haven’t met an Oliver yet
