Girl Name Inspiration?

bananamonkey · 17/12/2019 10:29

Have found out DC2 is going to be a girl and could do with some name inspiration. I dug out the list I had for DD1 but nothing is standing out, can anyone suggest any names along these lines?

I like names that are a little quirky but DH is more traditional, also love French names although we have no connection. DD1 is Emilia.

Amber - not sure I like this anymore
Astrid - nope
Audrey
Betsy - used for DD1's middle name, I really wanted it to be her first name but DH chickened out
Camille
Carys - love this but we're not Welsh so would it be weird?
Edith - too common?
Elodie - too similar to DD?
Greta
Ingrid - love this but may be too old lady?
Margot - used by someone I know this year
Milly - too similar to DD1
Nina
Orla - too common?
Romy
Romilly - Love it but DH hates it
Violet - my favourite I think?

I love Edith and Violet

I don’t think Edith is too common. It’s nowhere near as popular as your DD1 name Emilia

PlantPotting · 17/12/2019 10:42

I don’t think you should use Betsy if it’s DD1 middle name. That seems unfair as part of the point of a middle name is to give the child other options when they grow up. If you call DD2 this name then you are taking that option away

PlantPotting · 17/12/2019 10:43

Here are some girls’ names you may like but I still prefer Edith Violet or Elodie:

Imogen
Sadie
Margaret /Maggie
Clementine/ Clemmie
Roxanne/Roxanna
Pearl
Delilah
Ottilie (Ottie)
Cora
Eliza
River
Winter
Jemima
Holly

Peachbubble · 17/12/2019 10:52

How about
Elise
Nancy
Annabel
Penelope
Felicity
Polly

From your list, I like Audrey, Elodie, Greta and Violet

passthetea · 17/12/2019 10:54

Only like violet from your list, it's a classic.

bananamonkey · 17/12/2019 10:57

Thanks @Plantpotting

Don't worry I definitely won't be using Betsy as it's DD's name! Just left it in as an example of something I liked.

When I wrote common, I meant locally where I live there are tonnes of Edies! Also me and my sister share an initial and it was a bit of a pain not sure I want to do the same for DD?

I do like Clemmie and Ottilie. Unfortunately we already know a Maggie and a Jemima.

I forgot to add Vivienne but not sure I can convince DH Hmm Maybe Genevieve?

passthetea · 17/12/2019 11:15

Absolutely adore Vivienne. Kids wouldn't let me name their baby sister it Sad so they named her Alana.

bananamonkey · 17/12/2019 11:18

Thank you these are all great!

I love Elise, Agatha, Nancy and the Julia variations. I really like Helena but only if it's pronounced hel-AY'-nuh so that would probably annoy me if she was always called Helen-a.

I keep coming back to Violet too..

Ingrid and Nina are both lovely, as is Edith

Tamsin?

BlueChampagne · 17/12/2019 12:11

I thought Cerys was Welsh and Carys/Charis derived from the Greek for Grace? I'd hang onto Carys if I were you.

codenameduchess · 17/12/2019 12:17

I like Audrey, but Aubrey, Aurelia and Audelia are all lovely too.

jfoyo26 · 17/12/2019 13:10

As you said you like French names what about Louise!
I love this name but I'm biased as my daughter's name. But it's rarely used now, I have not meet another under 10, and has some cool quirky (ish) nicknames -Lou, Lulu...It may be the perfect marriage between traditional and quirky for you and your husband.

MikeUniformMike · 17/12/2019 13:21

Carys and Cerys are both Welsh. Both names were massively popular in the 1960s - Cerys in the south, Carys in the north. Seem very dated to me.

Amber - not sure I like this anymore - nice but some don't like it
Astrid - nope - gaining popularity. I like it.
Audrey - No
Betsy - nice but you've already used it
Camille - nice but Cam-eel or Cam-ee?
Carys - love this but we're not Welsh so would it be weird? - already commented
Edith - too common? - frumpy
Elodie - too similar to DD? - a bit. I'm not keen.
Greta - no, too Thunberg
Ingrid - love this but may be too old lady? - I know an adult one (friend's daughter) and I really like it
Margot - used by someone I know this year - No
Milly - too similar to DD1 - Too smilar
Nina - I like, other won't
Orla - too common? - no unless surname is Quiver
Romy - not sure
Romilly - Love it but DH hates it - I think it sounds like a war general
Violet - my favourite I think? - Vile-et

BlueChampagne · 17/12/2019 13:30

I stand corrected! Still leaves Charis though ...

MikeUniformMike · 17/12/2019 13:35

Carys (Karris) is likely to be easier than Cerys (Kerris). Cerys will be Serris, Cerise...
Charis will be Sharris, Charris...

Mumma4262 · 17/12/2019 16:28

I love Violet and Carys!!! I do prefer Cerys over Carys though!

Ricekrispie22 · 17/12/2019 17:02

Colette
Ethel
Sylvie
Heidi
Meredith
Genevieve
Delphi
Fleur
Clara
Ottilie
Antoinette

Militantmartha · 17/12/2019 17:11

Amber - very pretty and like the colour association although maybe a bit dated now?
Astrid - a bit harsh sounding and makes me think of asteroid
Audrey - has a dull vibe to it, makes me think of the word ordinary
Betsy - very pretty and quirky
Camille - not keen because of pronunciation issues
Carys - not keen on this for some reason and agree with the person who said it sounds dated.

Edith - nice especially as Edie is lovely as a nn
Elodie - like it, pretty sounding
Greta - can't decide how I feel about this name
Ingrid - it's nice but makes me think of a Swedish grandma but maybe Scandi nana chic is your thing
Margot - nice but very popular
Milly - not overly keen as feel it's a little wet sounding
Nina - lovely classic and works well internationally
Orla - love this, it's very pretty and soft sounding name. I'm yet to hear if used that much
Romy - lovely pretty and quirky name but quite unusual
Romilly - Not keen despite really liking Romy. Perhaps it's the Milly a the the end. However, I do really like the name Emilia.
Violet - not keen as it make me think of violet Beauregard from Charlie and choc factory

Elodie, Nina, Romy or Orla would be my pick I think. Also really like Betsy but wouldn't use again if already DD1s middle name.

MrsNoMopp · 17/12/2019 17:14

Celeste
Rowena
Larissa
Sasha
Arabella
Lisa
Manon
Selena
Madeleine
Sanchia
Anna
Natalie

mamablondie · 17/12/2019 18:30

Olivia? It’s very popular but if that doesn’t bother you I think it goes nicely with Emilia :)

FizzyGreenWater · 17/12/2019 18:39

Ingrid is lovely

Emilia and Anna
Emilia and Sylvie
Emilia and Saskia
Emilia and Juliette
Emilia and Polydora (Polly)

Please not Violet - it's just fashiony at the moment because people are running out of flower names to try but it's pretty ugly and Vi is such a horrid nn.

Genevieve is lovely but she's very likely to end up as Jen/Gen!

passthetea · 17/12/2019 18:46

@bananamonkey I've just seen your other dd is Emilia is that like Amelia but with an EM sound? If so how about Alivia it's better sounding to me because Olivia doesn't roll off my tongue when I say it it comes out alivia. I also know two little girls with this spelling.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 17/12/2019 18:47

If you loved Betsy before, what about Bette?
