Opinions on the name Oliver?
Will be Ollie for short Smile

My fiancé prefers Theo which I do love too but I feel like my heart is set on Ollie!

I love it but I’m biased because I have an Oliver Grin

Flymetothestars · 10/12/2019 10:51

It’s a gorgeous name - a classic

I also prefer Oliver to Theo

Obviously you probably already know that Oliver is popular as it’s the number 1 name, but the name Oliver has actually been on a downward trajectory for the past 10 years and now there’s far less Oliver’s being born each year than there was in 2010 (3,000 less Oliver’s per year now!).

I’d pick Oliver over Theo myself ❤️😍

Katfood · 10/12/2019 14:44

There are literally thousands of Olivers out there! I know soo many aged 15 and below.

chloxox08 · 10/12/2019 15:04

I don't mind popular names Smile

marmitemayonnaise · 10/12/2019 15:06

Really overdone. Personally I think it's boring and a bit wet- although not as bad as Thomas.

carbo · 10/12/2019 15:10

I think it's over used.

Whatagoodidea · 10/12/2019 15:13

I have an Oliver who has always been Ollie. Now he tends to be Ol for short

HairyToity · 10/12/2019 15:14

I love the name. I don't know many Olivers. Know far more young boys with the names Harry, Thomas, William or Charlie.

Go for it.

TheJoxter · 10/12/2019 15:14

It’s a nice, boring, sensible name. No one could be bullied for being called Oliver. I have one myself too and it suits him well (not that he’s boring or sensible Grin )

Flymetothestars · 10/12/2019 15:33

I really love it - go for it OP!

Flymetothestars · 10/12/2019 15:35

@TheJoxter I don’t find it boring! It’s classic and actually I don’t know any little boys called Ollie round here. Think the stats show 1 in every 100 boys is now called Oliver so it isn’t like the days of 1 in every 4 boys being called John!

I know you’re not bothered about popularity anyway OP xx

TheJoxter · 10/12/2019 15:38

@flymetothestars I suppose by ‘boring’ I mean ‘not weird’. As I said I have one myself so I definitely like the name!

Lavenderblues · 10/12/2019 15:44

So overused and dull imo.

Op, you may not care but your ds may not enjoy sharing his name with lots of others, with having to add his surname initial. Sometimes we forget that a name is supposed to identify us Smile.

Flymetothestars · 10/12/2019 15:52

@Lavenderblues yeh but 1 in every 100 boys is hardly going to make it difficult to identify! There’s no Oliver’s at my sons school!

Infact it is the Kids with ‘normal’ names, Charlie’s and Isla’s for example, that I find easier to identify. The ones with more wacky names my brain just seems to forget them. There’s a girl called Storm who I always think is called Sky.
I know there’s hundreds of names in between Storm and Oliver but still... For me I tend to remember the children with the more familiar names.

Luckingfovely · 10/12/2019 16:01

Pleasant but SO overused.

You might not mind popular names but your son may mind being one of four in his class.

Flymetothestars · 10/12/2019 16:19

@Luckingfovely 1 in every 100 boys are called Ollie/Oliver. So whilst it’s obviously technically possible to have 4 in one class, the actual statistical likelihood of that happening is minuscule.

Allyg1185 · 10/12/2019 16:23

I have an Oliver. He is 8. I work in childcare and have done for the past 13 years and I've only came across 1 other Oliver. There are none in his class either

Thetimetravelerswife · 10/12/2019 16:25

I like it.

Perhaps prefer Oscar though...

Chottie · 10/12/2019 16:27

Overdone and overused, but IMO Theo is a gorgeous name and sounds far more individual.

LoonyLunaLoo · 10/12/2019 16:50

DS is an Oliver but only ever called Oli. I love it and most importantly he loves it, which is great as I hate my name. He is one of 3 in his class though... but to be fair my next favourite was Harry and he’d still have been one of 3 in his class.

chloxox08 · 10/12/2019 16:53

Yes and my son might also hate the fact he's got a more unique name and never meets another person with his name .. can't exactly go by what my theoretical child wants because I'll never know 😂

Ollie is defiantly what I love most about the name, but I love Oliver too Smile I love Theo too so I'd use either, it's just I prefer Oliver and my fiance prefers Theo

OP posts:
Peoplearemiserable · 10/12/2019 17:11

I love the name Oliver because it’s classic and it’s normal. There are so many awful names around at the moment just because everyone wants to be unique (quite ironic really).

Lavenderblues · 10/12/2019 17:32

There are literally thousands of normal names that are not 'unique' to choose from!!

In other words, the alternative to an overused top 10 name is not necessarily some made up 'unique' name Confused

Militantmartha · 10/12/2019 19:18

It's a lovely timeless name and also sounds great shortened to Ollie so if you're not bothered by its popularity then go for it

chloxox08 · 10/12/2019 19:34

But I don't want to to chose a name that isn't in the top 10 whether it's unique or not ? 😂 it's between Oliver and Theo, both very popular names - I'm not going to chose a different name just incase my future son will hate sharing his name with someone, which I highly doubt most children would care about. Plus Oliver has been on the decline for a while now.
