How many Amelie’s do you know?

Hi,

Expecting dd1 in Dec!! Was keen on the name Amelie...however every time I mention it to people no one has ever heard of it?? Is it really that unknown? Worried that it’s too “weird” now.
How many Amelie’s do you know...and where are u based?

I’m pronouncing it like the “A” in Amelia and then “melly”

Ah-mel-LEE (it does sound very similar to emily but with an Ah sound instead of an Eh sound). Kind of like the difference between Emilia and Amelia...

Otherwise other option is Isla. Which do you prefer?

Thanks

There's a dozen Amelias in my kids' primary, along with a zillion Millie, Maya, Emily, Amaya, Emilia, Amelie variants.

I'd go for Isla, of which there's still at least four but more likely to get spelled and pronounced properly.

Thesearmsofmine · 04/12/2019 09:52

It’s been popular for around 10 years now maybe more. It’s pretty but definitely not unusual!

OddBoots · 04/12/2019 09:52

I know one, I think it is a lovely name but then I enjoyed the film of the same name.

donkey86 · 04/12/2019 09:53

I know two Amelies and two Islas - the Amelies are junior school age and the Islas are both toddlers. In the south east.

I think I prefer Isla, personally, but it’s close.

Peachbubble · 04/12/2019 09:59

I think Amelie has dropped a little in popularity over the last few years. I know two, one 10 year old, one 13 year old. Many more Amelias around. Isla is much more popular atm - I know about 6 I can think of, between 2 months and 7 years old.

BlackSwanGreen · 04/12/2019 10:02

I don't know any Amelies but I have heard of the name. Lots of Amelias (usually Millie for short).

Bluerussian · 04/12/2019 10:02

Amelie is quite a nice name, I remember it was extremely popular for a while, I kept hearing of children being called that, ten or more years ago.
It's still pleasant but I prefer Emily and Amelia, there's something 'made up' about Amelie.

PestoPlatypus · 04/12/2019 10:04

I know one, she’s 18 now & I love the name.

CointreauVersial · 04/12/2019 10:04

I know one Amelie (age 16) but no Islas. Having said that, now my kids are teenagers I'm no longer hanging around primary schools and nurseries.

Both nice names, I think, prefer Amelie.

Whattodoabout · 04/12/2019 10:05

Quite a few in my DC’s school which is a shame because Amelie is one of DH and I’s favourite films.

SleepingIsOverrated · 04/12/2019 10:05

Just one! X

daisypond · 04/12/2019 10:10

There are loads, and it is so dated because of the film. That’s what has made it popular. Even if you’ve never seen it, the name was part of the zeitgeist.

Kibobear · 04/12/2019 10:26

I have a 12 year old one. We have French ancestry so especially loved it.

bloodywhitecat · 04/12/2019 10:40

Just one, she's 16.

Skyejuly · 04/12/2019 10:42

4 amelies under 5. The other is 13

purplecorkheart · 04/12/2019 10:46

Just one fab nine year old!

terriblyangryattimes · 04/12/2019 10:48

Four- ages from baby to 7 years old.

Elbeagle · 04/12/2019 10:49

I know two. One is 5 and one is 6. I also know multiple Amelias, Emilias and Emilys.
And many, many Islas!

miahadalittlelamb · 04/12/2019 10:50

Thanks everyone.

I’m slightly more reassured. I bumped into a nursery worker and she had never even heard of the name, and then I started to get concerned that I was giving my child and unknown or “made up name”.

@Kibobear does ur dd like her name? And any problems she’s encountered?

Thanks

It was 80th on the ONS last year so top 100! Definitely not unusual.

Gazelda · 04/12/2019 10:59

2 in my DD's class. She's 10.

june2007 · 04/12/2019 11:02

Amelie I think is slioghtly less common as Amelia, If you like it use it.

Beamur · 04/12/2019 11:08

Quite a lot.
It's a pretty name though, so if you love it, don't be put off.
There are a lot of equally popular variants too - as someone has already mentioned, like Amelia. I'm not sure people using the name now would associate it with the film.
I think the ones I know possibly have French heritage in some way (siblings/parents have similar names)

miahadalittlelamb · 04/12/2019 11:14

Thanks all for your answers, it’s been so helpful.

Do you prefer Amelie or Isla?

daisypond · 04/12/2019 11:23

Out of those two, I would pick Isla.
