Welsh girl names and flower names

Hi all,
We've just found out that baby #2 is a girl (yay)! We're after a Welsh name which is easy to pronounce / spell - we live in Wales but half of the family are English. DD1s name is Catrin Rose. We'd like a flower / plant for a middle name again. Last name is close enough to "Davids" to make no difference.

First names we're considering - Bethan / Elinor / Megan / Rhiannon

Middle names we're considering - Lily / Ivy / Violet

Middle names that we can't use due to various reasons: Poppy, Holly, Daisy, Iris.

We'd love some opinions on the names we're looking at, and also any other names which you lovely lot think we should consider.

I love Gwen. I’d choose that.

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2019 15:11

It is nice. Probably due a comeback, if it hasn't come back already.

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2019 15:17

It's quite popular as a mn. Bethan Gwen D***s? etc

nespressowoo · 28/11/2019 17:36

I don't know if this has been mentioned but I love 'Gwennan'

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2019 18:00

The conventional spelling is Gwenan.
It's a popular name from the 1960s.
I know several, and all use the single n spelling.

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2019 18:04

Gwenno is pretty. pronounced GWEN-É’(the o is like the o in of, boss, cot etc not like the n in no)

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2019 18:07

Gwennan isn't wrong, just that Gwenan is more popular.
Similarly, Anwen not Annwen.

caringcarer · 28/11/2019 18:12

Cerys Lily

freesolo · 28/11/2019 18:14

I have an Eira (means snow) which I love. Pronounced ey-rah

DeRigueurMortis · 28/11/2019 18:47

I was about to suggest Eira Aster but I seen I've been beaten on the Eira Grin

Also Ceinwen Rose and Sian Marigold.

DeRigueurMortis · 28/11/2019 18:53

Oops see you already have a Rose.

Ceinwen Ione (pronounces Eye- oh-knee)

nespressowoo · 28/11/2019 18:57

It isn't wrong. I've worked with two 'Gwennan's.

FizzyGreenWater · 29/11/2019 10:16

Anwen Rose
Nia Willow

Cbeebiesrehab · 30/11/2019 22:05

Is Efa pronounced more like Ever or Eva?

WTFdidwedo · 01/12/2019 09:09

More like Ever but it's not really Ever either, it's more like Eh-Vuh or Air-vuh.

MikeUniformMike · 01/12/2019 13:52

Like Ever but the 'a' bit is like the a in cat, bat.
Evv-ah

It isn't pronounced like WTFdidwedo says - those are probably how it's said in a regional accent.

HatingTheBigShow · 02/12/2019 23:07

Merywen - Welsh for juniper. I'd love this but would be terrible with our surname.

lowlandLucky · 03/12/2019 06:43

Sian, gift of God

MikeUniformMike · 03/12/2019 10:31

The trouble with Merywen is that it will be mispronounced.
It's Merr-YW-enn

The YW vowel combination has no English equivalent, the nearest could be Uh-w or EW.
so Merr-UH-wen or Merr-EW-enn.

It isn't Merry-wen

HatingTheBigShow · 03/12/2019 13:19

I live in deepest, darkest Gwynedd - it wouldn't be mispronounced here!

KnickerBockerAndrew · 03/12/2019 15:12

I am Welsh first language and also live in Gwynedd, never heard Merywen...

ElBanana · 03/12/2019 15:27

Mabli is my favourite Welsh name.

HatingTheBigShow · 04/12/2019 07:34

I'm not exactly tripping over little Merywens at Cylch but my point was that any one seeing the name written down would be ok with the pronouncing it.

MikeUniformMike · 04/12/2019 08:34

Yes, if you are in Y Fro. But why use that word as a name when there are such lovely names you could use instead? Some that are pretty but might be a PITA if you are in deepest darkest Surrey or Northamptonshire but perfectly fine if you are in a mainly welsh environment (like Dyddgu, Buddug, Lleucu, Gwenllian, Elliw...)
You could use Merywen as a house name.

HatingTheBigShow · 04/12/2019 12:33

I think it would be lovely on a pony :D
