Welsh girl names and flower names

Hi all,
We've just found out that baby #2 is a girl (yay)! We're after a Welsh name which is easy to pronounce / spell - we live in Wales but half of the family are English. DD1s name is Catrin Rose. We'd like a flower / plant for a middle name again. Last name is close enough to "Davids" to make no difference.

First names we're considering - Bethan / Elinor / Megan / Rhiannon

Middle names we're considering - Lily / Ivy / Violet

Middle names that we can't use due to various reasons: Poppy, Holly, Daisy, Iris.

We'd love some opinions on the names we're looking at, and also any other names which you lovely lot think we should consider.

Try the names out as Firstname Surname and
Firstname Middlename Surname.

I'm not mad keen on Ivy and Violet but the full name might be ok
Bethan Ivy Da*s might sound nice in full

Bethan D**s might be a combination of two popular names, so you might find the middlename will get used quite often.

As a welsh speaker, my favourite of your first name is Rhiannon, but I would be put off by the anglicised pronunciation.

The middle names you list seem more like first names, apart from Ivy, which I'm not keen on. I would choose Lily.

Nerys as a first name?
Cadi
Loti
Llinos

Lili
Blodwen

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2019 22:32

We're after a Welsh name which is easy to pronounce / spell - we live in Wales but half of the family are English.

Forget names like Llinos.
Half the family will not be able to say it properly.

Runkle · 27/11/2019 22:33

Bronwyn Lily, Awen Rose, Seren Fflur, Angharad Lily, Ffion (Welsh for foxglove), Lowri Haf, Bethan Mali (jasmine flower).

BelfastNonBlonde · 27/11/2019 22:35

Elinor Ivy 💓

Doilooklikeatourist · 27/11/2019 22:37

Elinor Fflur
Don’t go with Blodwen
Eirlys Is nice , and easy to pronounce
I met an elderly lady whose name was pronounced Iris , but spelt Aeres ,

Doilooklikeatourist · 27/11/2019 22:40

Just thought about Delphine as a middle name , that would go with any of your liked names

WTFdidwedo · 27/11/2019 22:46

I love Elinor. Nerys is not good...

MamOfTwo · 27/11/2019 22:46

Only go for Bethan if you don't mind it being mispronounced ALL THE TIME... It is not BethUN, it is BethAN.

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2019 22:49

@Runkle, Bronwyn is a misspelling, the name is Bronwen.
Mali is a nn for Mary, so I don't where you get Jasmine Flower. Bethan is a nn for Elizabeth.

@Doilooklikeatourist, Aeres is heiress, not Iris.

Waterlemon · 27/11/2019 22:50

Seren
Gwen
(Don’t think anyone else has mentioned Gwen, but I Really love it!)

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2019 22:50

Scrap Cadi, they already have a Catrin. Would you name DD2 Katie if DD1 was Katharine?

Proseccoinamug · 27/11/2019 22:52

Llacu is not a welsh name
But Lleucu is.

Another vote for Elinor Ivy here.

Proseccoinamug · 27/11/2019 22:59

Elinor Fflur?

Also consider Eluned?

SwearingBy · 27/11/2019 23:03

D'oh - I knew I'd mispell one! Love the way Lleucu sounds but I always bugger the vowels up.

I have a female friend called Meredydd, but just assumed it could be unisex. Clearly she's an anomaly!

HB2019 · 27/11/2019 23:13

Will you be due in the summer? Hâf is a lovely name.

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2019 23:20

You're forgiven SwearingBy,
I like Lleucu too but if half the family didn't speak Welsh I wouldn't use it. Same goes for other names I like.

As far as misspellings and mispronunciations go, it does make me annoyed. In the past week I have heard several references to Nye-a Griffith in the media (Yes I mean you, Auntie Beeb). Nia is not exactly difficult or unusual. Get it right.

What if people thought it was how it should be pronounced and named their DD it?

Meredydd is a boy's name. It is not pronounced Meredith.

Call the baby Nia Fflur. It's lovely.

Lolimax · 27/11/2019 23:26

Non? I love it. Could be
Non Violet?

HeadlessGummyBears · 28/11/2019 03:59

Floral/nature inspired names:

Thetimetravelerswife · 28/11/2019 04:41

I only like Elinor.

Flower options:
Rosa, Lilia, dahlia, camellia, lilac , Flora

Doilooklikeatourist · 28/11/2019 07:12

Thanks @MikeUniformMike , I hadn’t seen it spelt that way before ( the tutor must have pronouncing it wrongly , and she was afraid to tell him ! )

BananaRaces · 28/11/2019 09:07

Wow, thanks so much for all the responses!

Unfortunately we probably won't use Ffion, Nia or Lowri as these are all family or close friends (how dare they steal such lovely names)!

I really like Eleri and Gwen, adding those to the list for sure, possibly Angharad too if family can pronounce...

Elin is nice too, but possibly too close in sound to Catrin?

@HB2019 I'm due in the Spring. Smile

KnickerBockerAndrew · 28/11/2019 09:18

Am agog that there is a female Meredydd. That's like calling your daughter Clive.
Eira is lovely, as is Efa, Eos, Awen, Awel, Siân. Bethan is nice but quite a middle-aged name tbh, like Linda in English.

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2019 09:25

@Doilooklikeatourist, Aeres is quite unusual, and has a difficult vowel combination. Ae doesn't have an english equivalent. The es as the end is ess not iss. Depending on where you are in Wales, Aeres might sound fairly close to EYEress. Iris is iris, but you might find it written or pronounced as Eirys, not to be confused with Eirlys.

Elin and Catrin are fine. Both lovely.
Haf might suit a spring baby as a MN. Another pretty name.
