We want to honour a family member who is french but we don't like their names! We thought maybe we can choose a nice French girls name instead. It needs to be one syllable, or at most a very short two. I've looked at various lists but nothing is jumping out at me. Any suggestions? Preferably not ending in A. Thank you!

Call her Emma, OP. It's the ultimate French name.

I have a french ancestor called Virginie, we were going to give it as a middle name to our daughter but she had too many names as it was. Ginny for short ♥️

Coralie?

PotteryWheel has a point, Emma is a very meaningful name in a French as up to Madame Bovary written by Flaubert, no woman was ever the main and solo character of a book. Emma Bovary marked a turn in French literature.

The name is Germanic though not French.

Also I’m not sure where that claim leaves Delphine by Mme de Staël, Consuelo and the Comtesse de Rudolstadt by George Sand.

I suggested it because it’s the most used girl’s name in France for 2018 according to the link posted by @BriocheBriocheBrioche.

And though I am a huge Flaubert fan, I must also put in a good word for the heroine of Madame de Lafayette’s (well, probably hers) La Princesse de Clèves....

It may be popular in France but it's not a French name.

No name is going to be a real nod to OP's relative just because it's French (or popular in France), it would need to have an actual meaningful link to her.

Wanted to name my child after you but your names are shit... sorry Grin

Well I wanted my DD’s middle name to be after my mum, but my mum said she found her own name boring so could she choose one she liked. So I said sure. So she said ok ‘Octavia’. So I said no. Grin

We did find one we both liked in the end.

To be fair @NameChange30 I think it's for me to decide what my relative would find meaningful!

Berenice is pretty. Bernadette is nice too, or Henriette.

florascotia2 · 30/11/2019 16:34

OP Berenice is certainly used in France, but it's not particularly/exclusively/originally French; it's been used in English for hundreds of years, and in many other countries, too. In English, it's sometimes spelled Bernice. It's originally ancient (Macedonian) Greek - and, fwiw, is related to the word (and now brand name) Nike, which means 'victory'.

Veronica/Veronika is a version of the same name.

Reading that back, it sounds unhelpful. Sorry, OP, that was not my intention. I was meaning to say that as many names with ancient origins are used throughout Europe, perhaps you might be able to find a French version of one of those that you like.

I’ve ordered food from Tesco online and upon the delivery guy arriving at my door he refused to delivery my food, for no valid reason, in front of my eyes! Came and rang my flat just to tell me he wasn’t going to deliver my food!

Now after many phone calls at Tesco customer service which have been quit useless after a week I managed to get to speak the manager who then offered me a £10 ONLINE voucher for my inconvenience ... as if I’m going to use their ONLINE service again with drivers coming to my flat and to refuse service, I’d rather order from different companies!

When ordering from Tesco, you have to wait a couple of days to receive the food!
Then you have to plan your schedule in a way that you have to be at home in order to receive your food, all that, just for them to refuse you service, given the fact that I have been a long time client of them.

This whole experience was very inconvenient and has caused me emotional distress and humiliation! I had to go out on the same day to get food from a corner store for 2-3x the price to be able to have certain ingredients and leave my toddler by itself! I’m not happy with Tesco’s service not with the £10 voucher!
What I have spent at the corner store grocery shopping was way more than £10, imagine having to get food at prices 3x the normal.I would have expected way more from them. Now I’m not sure how to go on about it. Is there anyone that has experienced the same? How did you resolve the issue? I’d appreciate some advice

Tell that to the princesse de Clèves.

Proper lols at Barbe and Raine in post 2. Meanwhile, over on Mamansnet, people are suggesting Brenda, Karen, Sarah-Louise and Aethelfleda.
