French girls names

We want to honour a family member who is french but we don't like their names! We thought maybe we can choose a nice French girls name instead. It needs to be one syllable, or at most a very short two. I've looked at various lists but nothing is jumping out at me. Any suggestions? Preferably not ending in A. Thank you!

I don't antagonise. I pick you up on the way that you bring a nasty tone to threads with your attitude.

Sidonie
Laure
Agnes (‘Anyes’ pronunciation)

Says she who picked the fight.

The trouble with some French names like Simone, Nicole, Florence or Julie is that the French pronunciation is so much nicer than the English one she will get.

I love French girls names as did my parents so if were to indulge that I'd go for Severine or Capucine.

BonBon411 · 28/11/2019 23:32

Josette
Coco
Claire
Corinne

Hmmm....are you sure you're relative is going to appreciate being 'honoured' by giving your child a name that is different to hers? If my name was Jane, I don't think I'd feel honoured if my family decided to choose a 'nice English name' like Mary instead.

Barbe (the name) doesn't mean beard, it's the French version of Barbara... though you might get tired of explaining that, plus it's better to have a name meaning beard than one meaning barbarian. Anyway, it's less fugly than Loanne or Clotilde.

ThighThighOfthigh · 29/11/2019 01:19

Zélie is a name I heard recently for a Franglais baby.

I like Laure but no good in a non rhotic accent.

AntennaReborn · 29/11/2019 07:28

@Charlottejbt the first name Barbe and the noun barbe may be of different origin, but barbe does mean beard!!!

MikeUniformMike · 29/11/2019 11:12

It certainly does. Why not call her Barbeapapa instead? Candyfloss.

TatianaLarina · 29/11/2019 12:16

I have a French relly called Barbara who refuses to be called Barbe for that reason. Just as a William may resist Willy as a nn.

Barbaros in the original Greek means foreign/strange. It’s also a saint’s name as in Santa Barbara.

TatianaLarina · 29/11/2019 12:16

A couple of names I love that haven’t been mentioned are Romane and Apolline.

CroissantsAtDawn · 29/11/2019 12:35

Some of these names are awful.

Mirabeau is a metro station and Odette is an absolutely lovely, 62 year old colleague.

I would avoid anything with accents.

dontalltalkatonce · 29/11/2019 12:38

Faustine.

dontalltalkatonce · 29/11/2019 12:41
Grin
TatianaLarina · 29/11/2019 12:44

I know a very glamorous Mirabeau.

TatianaLarina · 29/11/2019 12:46

Also like the name Mirabai which is Indian.

dontalltalkatonce · 29/11/2019 13:05

I had a dance teacher called Odile. She's be pushing 60 now.

sarah30000 · 29/11/2019 14:19

Aren't old french names coming back in though? Would something like Odile or Mirabeau not be equivalent to Nora, Edith, Florence, Sylvia etc?
