Does this hit you as a botanical name?

I love botanical names, but unfortunately DC2 will have the surname Gardner, which pretty much rules that out.

Could I get away with Betony as a name? It is a herb, but not too commonly known I think. Would you have seen its botanical connotation before I pointed it out here?

I wouldn't. I'm not sure I like it though. I feel like you have the botanical thing covered with Gardner! Grin

andthentherewasme · 19/11/2019 14:23

I'm sorry, but to me it would like Bethany not pronounced correctly...

MaybeDoctor · 19/11/2019 14:32

No, it’s very strange.

What about Rosie?

MustardScreams · 19/11/2019 14:33

Boy or girl? It just looks like Bethany if you didn’t know how to spell.

FenellaMaxwell · 19/11/2019 14:36

I’d just think you couldn’t spell or pronounce Bethany properly

Livebythecoast · 19/11/2019 14:45

Sorry not keen.
Others;
Fern (e)/Fearne
Fleur
Holly
Jasmine
Violet
All go nicely with Gardner

RiaOverTheRainbow · 19/11/2019 14:51

It's a lovely name, but I think Betony Gardner is a bit much. Nice for a middle name though.

crustycrab · 19/11/2019 14:52

Landscape?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 19/11/2019 14:53

“Beton” in several languages (Polish, French to name a couple) means “concrete”.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 19/11/2019 14:53

As in the stuff you walk on or building things with.

merryhouse · 19/11/2019 15:00

I agree that you're likely to get people calling her Bethany.

What about Constant? Grin

floffel · 19/11/2019 15:01

Capucine is French for Nasturtium
Anthea means flower
Aster is a daisy like flower - name means Star in Greek
Briony is a climbing plant that produces flowers
Calla is a south-African lily
Cicely is a herb with flowers
Viola is Violet in Latin

MaggieFS · 19/11/2019 15:01

Agree with pp that I don't know it as a word, but I don't think it's very nice as a name.

Is DC2 male or female?

merryhouse · 19/11/2019 15:10

Cicely? - doesn't have a massive plant vibe but probably well known
Melissa - a group of mintlike plants such as lemon balm
Perilla - also related to mint

MarianaMoatedGrange · 19/11/2019 15:14

Bettina? Would be shortened to Betty, same as Betony would. I like the name Sorrel too.

Marcipex · 19/11/2019 15:16

I would know, but I was brought up naming wild flowers.
You could spell it Bettany like Bettany Hughes ( I think) a historian. Still pretty.
I love botanical names.

MrsEricBana · 19/11/2019 15:16

Nothing about it says botanical to me but I'm afraid I'm not keen either.

Brittany2019 · 19/11/2019 15:23

“Beton” in several languages (Polish, French to name a couple) means “concrete”.

French speaker here and the first thing I thought of was "concretey?" Grin

RockinHippy · 19/11/2019 15:37

I thought concrete too, sorry, it just doesn't work

We know a Betsan, who goes by Betsi, could that work?

IfWishesWereFishes · 19/11/2019 16:08

Aster is gorgeous

Thistledew · 19/11/2019 16:09

Thanks all. There are plenty of non-botanical names I like, but was wondering if there was a 'stealth' botanical one that I could get away with without the name sounding too horticultural.

BoudicasBoudoir · 19/11/2019 16:10

I think of it more as a wildflower than a herb. Either way, it’s a plant, and I would notice it next to ‘gardner’.

Haworthia · 19/11/2019 16:13

With a surname like Garder you’re screwed unfortunately Grin Everything sounds jokey.

Rose Gardner - loves to grow roses
Jasmine Gardner - specialises in jasmine
Etc

sue51 · 19/11/2019 16:13

I think I'd go with the garden theme. How about Eden?

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/11/2019 16:20

Reminds me of Paul Bettany. Bethany is good! I also really love violet!
