Does this hit you as a botanical name?

I love botanical names, but unfortunately DC2 will have the surname Gardner, which pretty much rules that out.

Could I get away with Betony as a name? It is a herb, but not too commonly known I think. Would you have seen its botanical connotation before I pointed it out here?

Marguerite (it's a kind of daisy) would go well with the surname Gardner.

Pinkarsedfly · 20/11/2019 08:23

Betony is really pretty.

malfoylovespotter · 20/11/2019 08:23

Caltha

CharitySchmarity · 20/11/2019 11:15

I wouldn't use Betony because I think as a name it is more often spelt Bettany and people would often get it wrong.

I also thought of Briony, which I like very much as a name and a plant!

Also how about Hebe?

VenusClapTrap · 20/11/2019 14:58

I would make the connection, but I’m a gardener. Tricky. I think you’ll have to go with something non-botanical unfortunately.

beanaseireann · 20/11/2019 18:44

Bláthnaid is the Irish for flower.
Bláthín is little flower.
Nóinín is the Irish for Daisy.
Have you any Irish connections ?

Prunella?

NemophilistRebel · 20/11/2019 19:37

Blossom?
Petal?

VenusClapTrap · 20/11/2019 21:33

Actually, how about Nerine? Very beautiful flower and name, and not many people have heard of the flower.

zurigirl · 21/11/2019 03:07

How about a botanical middle name instead?

LostInTheColonies · 21/11/2019 03:43

Hebe Smile

OhTheRoses · 21/11/2019 04:28

I was thinking of Hebe too.
Having known a Rose Plant I think Rose Gardener is fine and many botanical names are better than Betany.

HUZZAH212 · 21/11/2019 04:36

Holly, Ivy, leilani, Marguerite, Alyssa, Daisy.

CravingCheese · 21/11/2019 05:17

Beton” in several languages (Polish, French to name a couple) means “concrete”.

German speaker here. Yep, I also thought 'concrete-y'...

CravingCheese · 21/11/2019 05:22

A botanical name actually does work with Gardener imo. Yes, there is a bit of a theme but it is a rather lovely theme, isn't it?

And I agree with PPs, Rose, Marguerite and Flora would be really nice.

HUZZAH212 · 21/11/2019 05:33

Betony would probably be confused for Bethany a lot. Plus for nn's it only lends to Bet or Tony. Something like Marguerite extends to; Marg, Meg, Betty, Betsy, Peggy.

HUZZAH212 · 21/11/2019 05:35

Urgh scrape the Betty and Betsy.. Had a brain fart and 'Elizabeth' popped into my head bizarrely 😂😳

blackteaplease · 21/11/2019 05:42

I knew it was a botanical name. I agree that betony is too close to bethany.
Sorrel was the name that first popped into my head. Or you could have viola, tilia or tansy.

Have you got a British plant book to flick through? I bet there are loads of the non standard botanical names to choose from.

Thermalvest · 21/11/2019 07:03

Sorrel, Briony, Marguerite all lovely.

Lots of interesting botanical names here

beanaseireann · 21/11/2019 12:38

Nerine was a lovely suggestion

Thistledew · 13/04/2020 15:02

We went with a very stealth botanical name in the end - Erica, which is Latin for heather. It esoteric enough that not many people are likely to spot it, and subtle enough that it won't matter if they do.

Beautiful @Thistledew - thank you so much for the update!! 🥰🥰🥰

MikeUniformMike · 13/04/2020 16:02

Thanks for the update. It's much nicer than Betony. Flowers Bear
