Plum’s sister!

HazeyJaney · 17/11/2019 19:23

Help please! We chose a very unusual name for our first daughter (Plum Elizabeth) and now we’re stuck on what to name her sister. Our current list feels a bit pedestrian in comparison, does it matter?

We like:

Alice
Flora
Gaia
Cecily
Beatrix
Sylvie
Merryn
Iris (actually, I’ve always loved Isis, but it’s obviously unusable now)

Fig?

aliensprig · 18/11/2019 11:24

Wow. Some real pieces of work on this thread. This is someone's child you're mocking?

Here's a thought - if it's borderline bullying to say it in person, then don't post it on a thread either.

daisypond · 18/11/2019 11:25

Plum is also a completely normal, traditional and common name for people from some countries-like China. My middle-aged neighbour is called it.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 18/11/2019 11:30

I like Gaia, but I think my favourite is PP’s suggestion of Sorrel.

I want daughters called Plum and Sorrel now....

MaidenMotherCrone · 18/11/2019 11:30

Plum is slang for testicle. I do love a Victoria plum warm off the tree though.

TenPenceMix · 18/11/2019 11:33

Plum? I hope she's never chubby. Plumpy Plum... poor kid.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 18/11/2019 11:49

I like Plum (not that it matters whether I do or not!) and the book Little Plum was the first thing I thought of.

How come Olive and Clementine are fine but people are ribbing Plum?

Sorrel is lovely, I know a 6 or 7 year old Sorrel and she's a sweetheart. Also love Merryn, a beautiful old Cornish name I believe.

Leopardprintboots · 18/11/2019 11:53

@OnlyTheTitOfTheIceburg yes exactly- I know a Huckleberry and there’s a famous musician called “Berry Gordy” I never thought the name “Berry” was particularly crazy.

Olive is becoming popular - why not Plum!

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2019 12:53

I like Plum. Isis is nice but might have a negative reaction. I also like Rumer and Boudicca.

daisypond · 18/11/2019 15:20

I know a 20-something Isis.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 18/11/2019 16:55

I think Plum is an amazing name - cute and different.

ChaosisntapitChaosisaladder19 · 18/11/2019 17:01

As if you named a person plum Biscuit

MollyHuaCha · 18/11/2019 17:19

Plum doesn't surprise me.

I know three Saffrons, an Apple, a Cherry, a Lettice, a Cress (Cressida) and a Cinnamon.

Stressedsuzy · 18/11/2019 17:32

Awww I like Plum!

Kitty
Jemima
Tabitha
Felicity
Posy
Clover
Camellia
Dephi

JudgeMeNot · 18/11/2019 17:47

Used to know of a girl whose name was Plug. Now that's a cruel choice. Plum is normal in comparison.

No suggestions for the new baby as they've all been mentioned but I hope you pick something equally unusual for the new baby

LimeRedBanana · 18/11/2019 18:34

At DD’s school there’s Gurmit, Inderprit, Rashida, Hadya, Mei Chen, Kyung-Wa, Ximena to name but a few.

Those names are completely different from Plum. They're just names. Confused

Unless you lump names from different nationalities in with silly names / nouns.

TatianaLarina · 18/11/2019 18:40

Plum is just a name.

Lavenderblues · 18/11/2019 23:11

Plum is cute and memorable!

Not any different to Clementine, Olive or Apple?! A plum is sweeter than a greasy salty olive!

I like Cecily or Sylvia!

emojisarentwords · 19/11/2019 00:56
  • Anywhere multicultural Plum is nothing. At DD’s school there’s Gurmit, Inderprit, Rashida, Hadya, Mei Chen, Kyung-Wa, Ximena to name but a few.*

No it's exactly the same somewhere multicultural. Plum is still unusual next to those names...

LimeRedBanana · 19/11/2019 02:24

Exactly. Confused

I find lumping a name like Plum in with names from other nationalities quite, um, indicative of something ... not all that complimentary.

I won't elaborate....

HUZZAH212 · 19/11/2019 02:44

@LimeRedBanana Yes, it's a bit of an uncomfortable statement really isn't it 😳

midsomermurderess · 19/11/2019 07:26

Jazz.

groovergirl · 19/11/2019 07:30

Painsnail, I love Aster!

More on the botanical theme:

Rosemary
Jasmine
Fern
Timothea

Pomona
Minthe (the Greek nymph who disguised herself as a mint bush -- such a cool trick)
Amaryllis (gorgeous flower. Ryll is nn)

Do let us know what you go with, HazeyJaney!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 19/11/2019 07:35

If plum grows up to be a cool kid then all is well, she can style it out .... however if she ends up a bit geeky, awkward or overweight then I feel for her Shock

emojisarentwords · 19/11/2019 07:39

Uncomfortable statement I don't know, but it's very telling for sure. Sounds like people will be encouraging names like table and chair next - anything so it doesn't sound 'forrin' God forbid.
To the poster who made that comment - those names will be usual run of the mill names in the communities where the people with them originate. Plum is not a usual name in any community which is the point people are trying to make.

You would assume that's pretty self explanatory but clearly not when we appear to be surrounded by one dimensional thinkers to put it politely.
