Jacob

What do you think of the name Jacob?
Does the supplanter meaning and biblical reference put you off? Some people have expressed to me that the meaning of names is very important and Jacob has such a negative meaning.
Would Jacob sound nice with Noah or are they too biblical together?
Any other recommendations of names to go with Noah? I prefer names with limited to no nickname options.

Jacob is nice but not keen on Jake if shortened.

HelloDulling · 16/11/2019 21:12

Jacob will always be shortened to Jake, so I’m surprised you’re considering it.

Meanings of names are unimportant to me, however.

flissity · 16/11/2019 21:13

We have a Jacob in our family - he’s never been Jake! Not even to his mates (he’s 18)

Whynotnowbaby · 16/11/2019 21:13

I like it and know several so I don’t think its meaning has put a lot of people off - I didn’t know it had any negative connotations! I find the biblical reference prejudice thing a bit weird, no one ever refers to names like Peter or Adam as being too biblical and they are at least as prominent as Jacob or Noah. Just be aware that Jacob is sometimes shortened to Jake, I know two who do this (alongside a Jake whose name is not short for Jacob).

itsgettingweird · 16/11/2019 21:14

I love Noah and Jacob.

They were on my boys list alongside

Caleb
Callum
Connor
Joshua

Chlosavxox · 16/11/2019 21:21

I think Jacob is nice Smile not keen on it being shortened to Jake though, that's the only thing that put me off!

olympia7 · 16/11/2019 23:11

Do you think Jacob will inevitable become Jake? If so it would hugely put me off. I had hoped as Jake was a name in its own right Jacob would be safe.
I do also really like the sound of Fraser.... but with Noah being biblical and Fraser being scottish, would they sound odd together?

MrsNoMopp · 17/11/2019 00:04

I like Jacob but yes, Jake is pretty likely as nickname. I suppose Jay or Jack could be used otherwise, or just stick with Jacob - it's not exactly a long name.

I don't like Fraser, it's quite harsh sounding.

MrsBertBibby · 17/11/2019 09:03

Not keen on Jacob even without the Rees-Mogg horror.

Toby/Tobin/Tobias
Joseph

ChrisPriss · 17/11/2019 09:10

It's a good, strong name, go for it!

daisypond · 17/11/2019 09:23

I think it’s likely to be Jake at some point. The biblical meaning wouldn’t put me off, though. How about using the anglicised form of Jacob - James? That’s not so easily shortened and goes nicely with Noah, without having two OT names.

olympia7 · 17/11/2019 09:26

MrsBertBibby I really love Toby however surname begins with B then an vowel. Im worrying it sounds awkward to say? Otherwise I'd have Toby Jacob.

I really like Jacob.
Have you considered Isaac? Still biblical though I guess if that's putting you off

sweetkitty · 17/11/2019 09:31

My Jacob is 9 the only one in his school. Never shortened to Jake, in Scotland Jakey means a drunk or druggie!

When he was born it was more about Twilight rather than the bible Confused

TeeBee · 17/11/2019 09:46

I have a Jacob. Nobody has every shortened it to Jake. His mates have never actually shortened it at all. I shorten it to J (Jay).

bullyingadvice2017 · 17/11/2019 09:46

I have one. Tho he will pull a face and tell you his name is Jakey.
We spend a lot of time with family in Scotland... never heard the druggie thing before. We are The most atheist family you could find also.

Tryingtogetitright · 17/11/2019 09:51

There are three Jacobs in my DS's reception class. None of them get shortened to Jake. There is a Jake in the same year but I don't think he's a Jacob. It's a nice name

CalleighDoodle · 17/11/2019 09:52

Good solid name. Three in every class.

Love Jacob

MissHenty · 17/11/2019 10:00

The Jacobs I know are never called Jake

MrsBertBibby · 17/11/2019 10:10

I know a Toby with a B surname, it works just fine! Whereas using Jacob B really is a bit awkward.

Toby Burns
Jacob Burns.

mummyof2ds · 17/11/2019 10:26

My son Jacob who's 9 never gets shortened to jack and his last name starts with a b

MissHenty · 17/11/2019 12:32

Jacob and Noah sounds so good together

I don’t think the B surname matters whatsoever

SuitedandBooted · 17/11/2019 15:15

People are must less likely to shorted his name if you never do. Just always call him Jacob, and nothing else. He may insist on Jay when he's a teen, but that would be down to him.
My daughter is called Rhiannon. We never call her anything else, and nobody else does.
BUT I have met other Rhiannon's over the years called Rhee, Ana/Annie, Nonnie etc. We never go there!
