Not getting very far with name options for a girl. Husband has suggested Sylvia. I certainly don’t hate it in the way I have other names he’s come up with. Think I quite like the nickname Sylvie. What do people think? Too old/middle-aged, or ripe for revival?

81Byerley · 13/11/2019 21:50

My granddaughter's name! Beautiful! it means "From the forest".

NameChangedNoImagination · 13/11/2019 22:57

Love love love it.

Tillygetsit · 13/11/2019 22:58

Gorgeous name and I much prefer it to the wispier Sylvie.

VerbenaGirl · 13/11/2019 23:00

Love it!

Astronica · 15/11/2019 02:50

I don't like Sylvia but I do love Sylvie. Sylvie is a name in its own right and not just a nickname for Sylvia, so personally I would stick with the much more modern and attractive Sylvie.

Episcomama · 15/11/2019 03:01

Sorry, I think it's dreadful. But I detest the craze for Elsie, Ada, Nora, etc.

ObtuseTriangle · 15/11/2019 03:12

I know a lovely little girl called Silva, and I really like the name.

BBInGinDrinking · 15/11/2019 03:19

It's a strong yes to Sylvia from me.

NoSauce · 15/11/2019 03:20

Me too. Ugly, dowdy names. Why would you burden your daughter with a name like those?

slinkysaluki · 15/11/2019 03:26

I have a friend called Sylue, lively name

PeopleWhoRun · 15/11/2019 03:29

Ooh I'm sorry, I don't like it. But if you like it that's the most important thing. You'll never please them all and most on here think it's nice

DontCallMeShitley · 15/11/2019 03:33

I prefer the older names, much better than all the Chardonnays and Chelseas, and those silly fused together ones that are neither one thing or another.

I prefer Sylvie though, but that is probably because I had a friend whose mother was Sylvia and she was horrible.

Lavenderblues · 15/11/2019 11:39

I know a French Sylvie, pronounced Syl VEE with the emphasis on the VEE.

I think Sylvia sounds nicer in English. I like it a lot actually.

missmouse101 · 15/11/2019 11:48

Hideous. Far too OAP a name for a baby.

Lavenderblues · 15/11/2019 13:36

See, I don't know any elderly ladies called Sylvia so I don't have that association at all.

Anyway, any old associations change once you meet a young one!

NotaWagon · 15/11/2019 14:01

I knew one and she was like joanna lumley (not patsy, joanna!)

MikeUniformMike · 15/11/2019 14:46

The ones I know are 60ish. I don't like the name.

Leeloo1233 · 29/05/2021 10:02

Both Sylvia and Sylvie are gorgeous. At first I wasn't sure about it but then realised I'm so used to the Lily/Lili/Lilian, Amelia/Amelie and Ella/Ellie/Elsa names that Sylvia was standing out somehow. But that's a good thing!!

Both names especially Sylvie will come back for sure, so naming your child this now would be definitely being ahead of time, instead of jumping on the Ella train 10 years too late

JemimaJoy · 29/05/2021 10:04

Really beautiful! I love it!

Leeloo1233 · 29/05/2021 10:08

Also love Sylvia Plath

partyatthepalace · 29/05/2021 10:10

Lovely

Sylvie is starting to be used a bit so is on the way up

Synchrony · 29/05/2021 18:55

I adore it. If we ever have a daughter in future it's almost certainly the name we'll use.
I don't think "OAP" at all. I think of a ballerina in La Sylphide, or a fairy in the forest with silver pixie dust!

Lemur12 · 29/05/2021 19:41

Love it. I know a 1 year old Sylvia and she's fab.

cheeseisnice · 30/05/2021 09:10

I have a 5 year old Sylvie. I love it!
