My ds has a friend who is a girl called Finley I really like it and she doesn't seem to have any issues :)

Bol87 · 09/11/2019 09:25

I really like it 🥰 I think it works as a girl or boy name personally. But you will have to explain she’s a girl quite a lot when she’s a baby! Not so problematic once she has longer hair! It’s only like Riley, Eden, River.. back in the day I went to school with a female Jamie, no-one confused her for a boy!

Frith2013 · 09/11/2019 09:27

No.

Twelve8Ts · 09/11/2019 11:25

I really like it, it’s not like it’s a very hard, masculine name. Go for it

Stollen23 · 09/11/2019 13:07

Yes, it sounds fine for a girl.

It's not super masculine like eg Romeo

ilovetofu · 09/11/2019 13:11

How about Fionnuala?

https://nameberry.com/babyname/Fionnuala

Or Finolaa?

MsPotterPepper · 09/11/2019 13:23

It's an awful name for a boy or a girl, along the lines of Casey-jayed, Kyle, Jayden etc

Mrsjayy · 09/11/2019 13:26

It really isn't along those lines at all it is a Scottish/irish name . And what is wrong with Kyle and jayden etc anyway ?

trotesio · 09/11/2019 13:28

Awful for a boy and even worse for a girl.

MsPotterPepper · 09/11/2019 13:52

I assumed (without thinking) that the op is English. If she's Scottish or living in Scotland then the name doesn't have the same stereotype surrounding it.
English people who name their hildren Finley, Jayden, Kyle, McKenzie, Chelsea, Chardonnay and add 'Leigh' onto names tend to be 'chavy'.

FizzyGreenWater · 09/11/2019 13:52

All the boy/girl patriarchy thing - all yes, BUT you could just look at it as Finley being a name that's popular at the moment to the point of being really overused and therefore pretty boring. So why not find something far less humdrum?

I must know about ten versions of Finley, all under 12 - it's DULL.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 10/11/2019 16:51

I think it’s MUCH better for a girl!

Sparklysunflowers · 11/11/2019 06:59

I don't like Finley or Finlay for either gender, but agree that it's not particularly masculine sounding.

SugarThreat · 11/11/2019 07:51

I love it !!!

Trewser · 11/11/2019 07:55

I have a (male) horse called Finley. So no.

PineappleDanish · 11/11/2019 08:00

I genuinely thought it was a boys name.

That's because it is.

Apolloanddaphne · 11/11/2019 08:04

I know a girl called Finty which I think is nice and has the same vibe?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/11/2019 08:16

I'm with NameChange30 here. Names that were once used only for boys sometimes end up being used for girls too. Guess what, if they become popular girls' names, they stop being used for boys at all so that boys don't get tainted by being thought to be female.

Names that are commonly used for girls never, ever start being used for boys while there are still lots of girls/women with the name.

Calling a girl a traditionally male name does very little to challenge this.

The real change would be if we saw lots of little boys called Margo, Rose, Sophie, Victoria etc.

I won't hold my breath.

nameberry.com/blog/unisex-baby-names-names-that-morphed-from-blue-to-pink This article lists lots of names that have switched from boys to girls in the US, and when it happened.

www.bustle.com/articles/155836-14-baby-names-for-boys-that-are-typically-girl-names This article suggests some names that are currently popular for girls but could be used for boys. Very telling that all the author is doing is pointing out that every single name on the list was originally a boy's name and maybe the trend could be reversed. No suggestion that names that have always been mostly used for girls could start being applied to boys.

Sparklysunflowers · 11/11/2019 14:40

I think Finley sounds quite soft and feminine.

Finnian would be a stronger boys name imo.

CockleburIck · 11/11/2019 16:35

Terrible.

It’s a boys’ name. Simple as that. And not even a particularly nice one.

Loopytiles · 11/11/2019 16:36

Boys name.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/11/2019 16:53

There was nothing soft and feminine about my Great-Uncle Finlay! Grin

SaharaSunset · 11/11/2019 21:40

Definitely works as a girls name, it just so happens that it predominantly being used as a boys name as it's on trend for boys.

It makes me think of the children's books Finley Flowers and she's a girl?

I taught a Finnleigh - loved the name for her but the spelling is too much!
