It isn't unisex it's a.male name

clpsmum · 07/11/2019 20:33

I love it

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/11/2019 20:41

Apparently in means "fair warrior" when used as a girls name

crosstalk · 07/11/2019 21:05

OP Just go for it. It's a lovely name and "fair warrior" is great. I have a bisexual name as did my husband. And I've always liked Julian for both sexes - the female one was the first to be in print in England.

I never had a problem with my unisex name.

Bumpingalong84 · 07/11/2019 21:23

@usernamo I really like it! I am one of Those who likes boys names for girls, I like Elliott for a girl. I got so much stick about it, I think it’s so feminine sounding as is Finley. I love Noa For a girl and know one.

So many on here use the argument would you call a boy ... it’s rubbish. If you like it go for it.

bridgetreilly · 07/11/2019 21:23

It doesn't though. That's just the way that baby name websites make up meanings for names which mostly don't have meanings because they are, you know, names.

BonBon411 · 08/11/2019 00:26

I love it 🥰

icouldwriteabook · 08/11/2019 00:28

Can’t you just swap Eden and Finley ?? Either way it’s 2019 you could call her spider and it’d be fine

PixieDustt · 08/11/2019 00:31

Not personally. I have a nephew called Finlay so that's probably why. Don't know any girls called Finlay.
I suppose it's a bit like when people use Riley as a girls name whereas I see it as a boys name.
Choose what you like Smile

The first time I heard the name, it was used for a female character in a tv soap way back in the dark ages (Home & Away 1991 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finlay_Roberts ), albeit spelled ‘ay’ at the end, so I’ve always thought of it as a unisex name.

Bluerussian · 08/11/2019 00:59

Finlay is fine for a girl, I'm wondering about diminutives and nicknames. "Finnie' or 'Fin' (or even FinnallFinnle, I can imagine fellow school children calling her that, or 'Finster'; it's friendly to have a nickname.

Tammytobys · 08/11/2019 08:23

Finley is used for both boys and girls and in the US it is more popular as a girls name. I think Lisa Marie Presley has a little girl Finley?

Names change over time and Finley may well become a unisex or female name.

In the US more girls than boys are named Finley

FizzyGreenWater · 08/11/2019 12:24

Far far FAR too popular as a current trendy boy name to use for a girl. She'll almost certainly have a Finley/Finlay/Finlee (!!) in her class. Don't!

Leopardprintboots · 08/11/2019 13:17

@NameChange30 yes very interesting points and I agree with what you’ve said. The thing is we do live in a patriarchy and it IS (as you say) much more acceptable (cool even!) to give boys names to girls than girls names to boys (practically illegal). What I love though is the thought of these little girls called Finley or Noah or Rory (I know two!) ending up in a class with a boy with the same name. That boys parents probably thought they picked the safest choice possible and li and behold a gasp girl has the same name. I love it! Let’s topple this patriarchy with names (I’m being silly now but hopefully you get my point in there somewhere) x

Minai · 08/11/2019 13:23

It’s not a unisex name though. It’s a boys name that a small amount of people have used for girls. There are so many lovely girls names I don’t know why people pick boys names for girls

NameChange30 · 08/11/2019 13:25

Using a boy's name for a girl is not toppling the patriarchy. It's confirming to the idea that boys are cooler than girls.

As soon as a boy's name starts being used for a girl, people stop wanting to use it for boys, it becomes "a bit wet" (because of course feminine boys must be "wet").

NameChange30 · 08/11/2019 13:25

*conforming

Neolara · 08/11/2019 13:44

Well, you'd be setting your dd up for a lifetime of people being confused by her name. Maybe worth considering what life might be like for your dd if she turns out to be not traditionally "feminine", with a boy's name. Secondary age kids can be very cruel.

Stollen23 · 08/11/2019 14:29

Kids are far more accepting of names than many adults on these threads. I know girls called Rory and Finley and other kids just accept these as their names.

And yes, in America Finley is mainly a girl's name.

Stollen23 · 08/11/2019 14:30

As soon as a boy's name starts being used for a girl, people stop wanting to use it for boys, it becomes "a bit wet" (because of course feminine boys must be "wet").

Well, let's try to change that attitude.

NameChange30 · 08/11/2019 14:33

Great! What girl's name are you going to use for your next baby boy?

SilverySurfer · 08/11/2019 23:40

Horrible

Savingforarainyday · 08/11/2019 23:43

Finleigh?
