Ruaridh, Caspar or Tristan

Hello!

I’m 8 days overdue with our first baby boy. All along my husband and I have loved Ruaridh but lately we’ve started to have some second thoughts - mine are mainly around people not being able to spell or pronounce his name (he’ll be half Scottish but we live in England).

I’d love some opinions on these three names - I love Caspar and my husband likes Tristan. Or if you have any other suggestions we might not have thought of.

Thanks!

Casper 😍

BelfastmummyL · 03/11/2019 22:19

I love the irish name Ruairi. Might be more inclined to spell it Rory although I appreciate theyre not the same pronounctaion. Just makes life a bit simpler in the longer term for all concerned

Divgirl2 · 04/11/2019 00:56

There are only two "correct" spellings of Ruairidh and neither of them are how you spelt it in your original post. In Gaelic if you have vowels surrounding a consonant then they both either have to be round vowels (O, A, U), or slender (I, E). So Ruairidh is a perfectly valid spelling, as is Ruaraidh. It drives me absolutely nuts when I see that the most common spelling of Ruairidh is nonesense.

Given that you can't spell the name I'd go for Caspar or Rory.

I love all three of them but ADORE Tristan! My brother is called Tristan and I always thought it was a great name.

wigglybeezer · 04/11/2019 12:35

if you are in England go for Rory or one of the others. Ruairidh if in Scotland and definitely not Caspar, I have known two Westies called Caspar and a white cat so I regard it as a name for pets!

Just a little update - I’m sitting cuddling Ruairidh - he’s six weeks old tomorrow and is just the best!

Congratulations! Welcome Ruairidh Xmas Smile Always nice to hear an update on these threads.

TatianaLarina · 17/12/2019 10:04

Ruairidh is a great name!

PlantPotting · 17/12/2019 10:46

Yay thank you for the update @thelostartofkeepingsecrets ❤️ Gorgeous

Was it tricky choosing between the three names or did it all fall into place when you saw him?

midsomermurderess · 17/12/2019 11:42

I like Ruaridh best too but as I'm in Scotland, the pronunciation is familiar. I think people can get to grips pretty quick;y with non-familiar names though, eg Aoife, Niamh. I do find it funny that someone criticises Caspar and Tristan and then suggests Leslie.

evilharpyinapeartree · 17/12/2019 11:56

I love Ruairí. No idea what the standard Scottish spelling is but Wikipedia gives about five different versions.

Tristan is nice too. Not a fan of Caspar.

Think about the school playground. Will these names mean a piss take?

thelostartofkeepingsecrets · 17/12/2019 13:58

@PlantPotting - we’d liked Ruairidh all along but I think I had last minute cold feet. So glad we went for it though - he really suits it!

@NoMorePoliticsPlease - hopefully not! He’s officially Ruairidh now!

I'm familiar with the Ruari spelling and no-one has struggled to pronounce it. Love it.

SmellMySmellbow · 17/12/2019 14:00

Oops - old thread! Sorry

PlantPotting · 17/12/2019 14:37

@thelostartofkeepingsecrets what a ridiculous comment “will these names mean piss take”?! Well done for rising above it. 3 lovely names and glad you found a firm favourite- excellent choice and thanks again for updating xxx

Mudcakemaniac · 17/12/2019 14:44

My partner loves the name Ruairidh but we chose the name Kasper in the end😊

evilharpyinapeartree · 17/12/2019 14:58

I didn't read the update! Great choice OP, hope you're enjoying him Grin

MrsBungle · 17/12/2019 15:05

Love the name Ruairidh, congratulations.

whyamidoingthis · 17/12/2019 15:08

@MonkeyNeedsABrushedSuede - We have a Tristan. Whenever we tell people DS1's name they always say 'oh, I LOVE that, what a great name!' But when we say DS2's name is Tristan they always say 'oh, right..ok' so it's obviously not universally liked!

It took me a couple of reads to realise that you hadn't named both ds Tristan. Mind you, that would explain the slightly rude responses you get to ds2's name Grin

For the record, I dislike Casper and Tristan but love Ruaridh. I'm Irish though so pronunciation is obvious to me, except the spelling is slightly different to the Irish one (Ruairí or Ruairidh).
