Ruaridh, Caspar or Tristan

Hello!

I’m 8 days overdue with our first baby boy. All along my husband and I have loved Ruaridh but lately we’ve started to have some second thoughts - mine are mainly around people not being able to spell or pronounce his name (he’ll be half Scottish but we live in England).

I’d love some opinions on these three names - I love Caspar and my husband likes Tristan. Or if you have any other suggestions we might not have thought of.

Thanks!

I don't know how to pronounce Ruairidh. so I have no idea if I like it or not!

I love Tristan though!

villainousbroodmare · 01/11/2019 19:30

I like Ruaidhrí and really don't like the other two.
Just check spelling of Ruaidhrí if you go with it. In the Irish language there is a pretty unbreakable spelling convention of 'caol le caol agus leathan le leathan', meaning that you have to match vowels either side of a group of consonants. So the spelling in your title would be incorrect; you have to add a silent 'i' at the end of the the first syllable. I don't know whether that convention exists in Scots Gaelic.
Also in Irish the final 'i' has a fada (í) that indicates the sound is lengthened. I think that in Scots Gaelic the fada is flipped (ì).

villainousbroodmare · 01/11/2019 19:31

So Ruairidh would also fit the convention.

villainousbroodmare · 01/11/2019 19:33

And Ruaraidh also Grin

So many spellings of Ruaridh/Ruairidh on this thread! That would be enough to put me off, even though it’s lovely. Imagine the annoyance of all those tiny little spelling mistakes, day in, day out. You’d have to be really careful about checking it was correct on important documents too — my husband has a long, (apparently) difficult to spell name too and this part has been a nightmare with ID, mortgage applications, etc.

Hamish?

Dislike Tristan.

GoldPaperStars · 01/11/2019 22:12

MonkeyNeedsABrushedSuede I have to ask - what’s your DS1s name?! I want to know what gets such a great reaction! I love Tristan so it must be pretty fantastic! (Can you tell I’m also trying to choose a boys name at the moment?!)

grafittiartist · 01/11/2019 22:20

Ruairidh is my favourite name for a boy- I love it!
I also love the Welsh name Rhodri.
Gosh- that was fun with spell check!!

DramaAlpaca · 01/11/2019 22:59

I love Ruaraidh. It's such a strong name & much nicer than Tristan or Caspar, IMO. I know how to say it, but the correct spelling is defeating me Grin

I also love the Irish version, Ruairi.

Starryskiesinthesky · 01/11/2019 23:03

Ruaridh is a great name! I can’t spell it easily but can say it but I am Scottish!

PsychosonicCindy · 01/11/2019 23:24

If my 3rd daughter had been a boy she would've been Tristan love that name also thought of Hayden. Casper is cool too but the other name sounds nice but you'd be spelling it for people constantly! (I've not even been able to spell it here) btw 8 days overdue? I went 7 days over and I was like "come ON! Fed up now!" Good luck! X

Astronica · 02/11/2019 00:06

I love Ruaridh and I'm not in the UK and had to learn how to spell and pronounce it. This wasn't hard to do. It's my first choice of your names. I also love Caspar. Tristan is okay.
Other ideas:
Jasper
Hamish
Dougal
Felix
Magnus
Rufus
Rafe

MonkeyNeedsABrushedSuede · 02/11/2019 06:55

@GoldPaperStars he's called Ezra. It's obviously getting quite popular now though. It also seems to be fairly well regarded on here but I do recall one poster saying that future generations would view the name Ezra the way our generation view Kevin and Darren Grin

8weekstogoHohoho · 02/11/2019 07:06

I have a Ruairí and people tend to call him Rory but its pronounced Rur-eee

8weekstogoHohoho · 02/11/2019 07:06

I'm irish living in Ireland btw

Taranta · 02/11/2019 07:09

I have a Caspar (now 9) and I've never regretted it, never had any issue with it - apart from people automatically spelling it Casper. Think it's a beautiful name, obviously. It's not so uncommon these days, there are a few in my son's school, in different years.

LarkDescending · 02/11/2019 07:12

Lovely choices OP. Caspar is my favourite. Good luck!

Cookit · 02/11/2019 07:24

In terms of pronunciation of Ruairidh I’d probably say Rory which I know isn’t completely correct but is close. I’m not sure how to correctly pronounce but I knew the name was the equivalent of Rory.

I like Caspar and Tristan. I think Tristan edges it for me out of the 3.

Thanks everyone, still enjoying reading your views while I’m waiting for things to happen. 40+9 today - had a show last night which I thought was an exciting change! Who knew the things that can give you a little perk up in late pregnancy?!

Good luck op!!

MissHenty · 02/11/2019 08:09

Surprised to hear there’s a few Caspars at your sons school. You must be in a hotspot. The name is waaaay outside the top 100 names. I’ve never met one

milliefiori · 02/11/2019 08:13

I love Ruaridh - it's one of my favourite boy's names. And if you are half Scottish it's fine. But Rory is close enough, if you like that.

I find Caspar and Tristan a bit bland in comparison. They are OK, but there's something so vital and exuberant about the name Ruaridh.

VenusClapTrap · 02/11/2019 10:31

Tristan is lovely.

lemonjam · 02/11/2019 10:38

I have a Ruairidh so obviously think it’s lovely, although Caspar was actually top of my list! I love it but DH didn’t. Not so keen on Tristan.
We are in Scotland so have no issues with pronunciation - there are 3 others at nursery! - although no one can spell it. Promised myself before hand I wouldn’t let that annoy me, though.
