Rhys is better than Mason which is an American sounding name. I dislike the way they use surnames as first names.

Nillynally · 25/10/2019 00:20

As a teacher Mason is waaaay to common. Why do I like Rhys but don't like Reece??

Bowerbird5 · 25/10/2019 00:27

I like both. Have you considered calling him both then chose which you prefer for his used name. Rhys Mason ? I haven't heard Rhys for a whileand have only known one Mason who is a lovely little boy.

Sorry posted too soon.

Congratulations!

I know a Rhys and a Mason at DS's school. Personally I'd choose Rhys, Mason just don't sound right to me as it's also a surname.

Onebrokentoe · 25/10/2019 01:19

I’m an Aussie with a Rhys, so I’ve broken the ‘have to be Welsh to call your son Rhys’ rule. Oops.

Generally here Rhys is a boy’s name, Reese a girl’s name and Reece a surname.

This thread has actually made me realise that if I’d ever had another ds (impossible- I can’t have any more for medical reasons!) then Rhys would be in the name somewhere. I’m a big fan.

C0untDucku1a · 25/10/2019 05:07

Not Mason. It is awful.

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2019 07:40

Onebrokentoe, you don't have to be Welsh, it's just that it sounds completely different in Welsh. On:
forvo.com/word/rhys/
Emmzi and Iwpodcast get it right,

Onebrokentoe · 25/10/2019 10:38

MikeUniformMike Thanks for that link, it’s very interesting to hear the different pronunciations.

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2019 10:48

It's a nice name. I know many of them. Dozens probably.
Only one says it as Rees, and he has no Welsh connections.

It might just be me, but I think that taking a name from a different language is a bit downmarket. I guess Aus. is a bit different, but here in the UK, they tend to be bad boy names and date quite badly.

Rhys is a great name!
