Ithink most people would think of Teddy as a Teddy Bear 🧸

Except if you think of Teddy Roosevelt, Teddy Prendergast, Teddy Thomas etc

All shortened versions of BC names.

Def bit more unusual for girls though.

Teddy is awful, boy or girl. Imagine if she becomes a judge or police woman....
Constable Teddy 😂 or
' all rise for the honourable judge Teddy' 😂 😂

Criminals will have afield day with that one

If it’s short for Theodora then fine, otherwise no. I hate diminutives being used as first names, my Mum did this with me and I changed my name by deed poll to the full name as soon as I could.

Only if you name her Theodora which is beautiful with Teddy as a nn

I like it. It's cute and unisex, which I think is always helpful for a girl. So long as she has a grown up name too, so she can change to Thea or Dora or Eddie etc if she wants to as she gets older. (Theadora is lovely. Or Edina/Edwina if you have to.)

Except if you think of Teddy Roosevelt, Teddy Prendergast, Teddy Thomas etc

Except hardly anyone will even think of the latter two people. Not exactly household names, are they?

Unisex just means it's a boy's name doesn't it? How is having a cutesy toddler boy's nickname helpful for a girl?

Have any of the unisex name advocates hot unisex names themselves? I have, and it has been anything but helpful.

Teddy Prendergast, Teddy Thomas etc

Never ever heard of either of these...

My first thought when I hear Teddy is a Teddy Bear 🧸

Perfect! Makes the name interesting.

One of these old fashioned names making a come back.

The point was that people's first association with Teddy is a Teddy Bear rather than these people!!

I would assume she was called Edwina. Which actually now I think about it I don’t hate.

No, it's cutesy and just daft.

It hardly qualifies as a 'come back', if it's for a girl. Grin

Honestly - would any of you want it for your own name, and with no actual decent name as a back-up? And if you say yes, I simply don't believe you, because no self-respecting woman wants to be named after a toy (at best), or an item of lingerie (at worst).

@OooErMissus

sorry I think it is making a comeback. Robbie W has seen to that.

I agree it should be in combo with a longer BC name like Theodora. Luckily it takes all types.

Sorry to be pedantic, but 'come back' is not the right phrase, if you're using it in relation to a girl.

It has nothing to 'come back' from, since it's never been a girls' name.

It would only be appropriate to use it for a boy. And even then it's not correct, as it's never been a particularly popular name for boys, such that it appeared, waned, and then 'came back'! It's been consistently in the background since it came into use.

I feel differently to you as it's a family name that has been well used in the past and now is popping up in the most recent generations.

Also interestingly I have met 3 other child Teddys in the last few years. So yes It is making a comeback in my experience.

I think the stats of 'rising' names will also bear that out.

On this thread a pp mentions she has an older relative ( female) who is named Teddy ( from Theodora? ) . I agree that unusual.

Love it but go for full name then have it as the nickname
