Arthur or Archie

We are currently deciding between Archie and Arthur.

Archie is DH’s choice - I like it, but not as keen as it feels too “nicknamy” (I’m in the mumsnet camp of full name on the BC, but hate Archibald!). Also less keen due to royal baby being named recently.

I like Arthur as it’s classic/traditional. Both names are higher up in top 100 than I wanted, but I’m letting that go.

We aren’t finding out the sex which I feel makes it much harder this time! We already have a Harry (so would it be weird to have an Archie? As obvs a William would be a no!)

Comments and other suggestions welcome (ages ago we also liked Luca but have no Italian links?)

I really like Arthur - it's my favourite of your choices. I think Luca is fine even without Italian links. I'm not so fussed on Archie personally.

mynameisMrG · 13/10/2019 09:14

I like both. I have an Arthur and Archie is a potential middle name for our next if it’s a boy. So I suppose that means I prefer Arthur, but you’re right it has hugely grown in popularity recently

bitchfromhell · 13/10/2019 09:14

Archer? Half joking, although it combines both and I’m sure I’ve seen it used by American YouTube folk.
Arthur is definitely my favourite of the two but Archie is a lovely name.

daisypond · 13/10/2019 09:17

Arthur. I’m not so keen on it personally but Harry and Archie together are too twee.

dementedma · 13/10/2019 09:18

I think an Archie with a Harry will look very royal family. Lucas, instead of Luca? Or Marcus?

PreschoolYes · 13/10/2019 09:20

I don't like Archie for the reasons you stated, it's nicknamey and the royal baby would put me off so I'd go with Arthur.

I love the name Arthur (Artie) or Lucas

Other suggestions

How about Luke or Dylan

What’s your girl name @SaltedCaramelEverything

SaltedCaramelEverything · 13/10/2019 09:23

bitchfromhell I actually came across Archer in a baby book! Maybe I need to raise with DH. However middle name will end in “er” so not to sure if that clash is an issue

daisypond agree re them being twee together. Our girls name kinda clashes with Harry but we’re letting it go as we love it (and don’t think a name exists if we stick to all our criteria!). But I think Harry and Arthur sounds like 2 solid names!

Majority siding for Arthur so far, thanks for comments they’re much appreciated, will see what else is said

Archer?A baby in my family is called this and his parents get loads of lovely comments. It's also a cross between them! I like archie otherwise.

Lavenderblues · 13/10/2019 09:25

I'm not keen on either.

But I would choose Arthur if I had to. It's a solid name that works for all ages.

Archibald is awful and Archie is a cutesy twee nickname that won't age well imo.

sandyfoot · 13/10/2019 09:35

Arthur is lovely. Archie would be ruled out for me if I already had a Harry. Alfie?

AverageMummy · 13/10/2019 09:38

Did you see the abuse the royals got for choosing Archie? It’s associated with a very different demographic to Arthur. You might not care but I’d rather know.

AverageMummy · 13/10/2019 09:41

I like Arthur but just throwing out Asher as I love it & it’s probably half way between your favourites

Also I have a friend with a baby Arthur who goes by Archie as a nickname

SaltedCaramelEverything · 13/10/2019 09:42

@dementedma weirdly I’m really not keen on Luke or Lucas! So Luca would be the only option there (sorry should have put in my OP I’m really fussy...)

@misshenty our girls name is Callie. So it clashes with Harry a bit but we just love it. I came out with it way before ttc and DH just agreed and said “done!”

@LionKingLover ooh that’s good to hear another positive for Archer. Does baby get called that or Archie?

@Lavenderblues yes it’s having a 40 year old Archie that I think doesn’t sit right...

@sandyfoot we really like Alfie, but already used by a child too close in the family unfortunately (I know “no one owns a name” but we see them so regularly I just wouldn’t want to)

@AverageMummy you’ve reminded me we did have a conversation about full name Arthur but nn Archie, which they’d probably grow into Arthur as they got older. But we thought it was pushing the link a bit? Good to know it’s been done tho

OP posts:
AverageMummy · 13/10/2019 09:51

Yes probably tenuous but people just accept whatever you want to do. Some mainstream nicknames are far weaker of a link - Molly for Mary, Daisy for Margaret

Re the 40 year old name - that wouldn’t concern me as by the time they’re 40 it’ll be pretty normal going by the charts at the moment. The world will be full of Alfie Harry Albie Charlie etc

MissHenty · 13/10/2019 09:56

Totally agree with everything @AverageMummy has said above about 40 year old Archie being totally normal in 20-30 years. No one will bat an eyelid.

I also know a little Arthur locally who currently goes by nickname Archie all the time at nursery etc. So can’t be unusual. No one round here questions it. It just seemed normal to me and all his nursery school teachers call him Archie but he has Arthur on official forms.

finallychangedmyusername · 13/10/2019 10:02

Arthur definitely

Peachbubble · 13/10/2019 10:27

Arthur

RuthW · 13/10/2019 10:50

Arthur is much much nicer but very popular now.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/10/2019 10:53

Much prefer Archie

Newearringsplease · 13/10/2019 10:54

Isnt it funny how times change I went to school with an Arthur, this was when every lad was called Darren and Gary. He was teased mercilessly

user1493494961 · 13/10/2019 11:08

Arthur nn Artie.

Astronica · 13/10/2019 12:50

I've seen Archie used as an Arthur nickname so that may be an option. While I like Archie more I would choose Arthur in your case with brother Harry.

DramaAlpaca · 13/10/2019 12:52

Arthur by a long, long way.
