Corin or Corinne?

Hello,

We are having a girl and had the name Corin picked out for either sex. Problem is the spelling... Really want her to be a Corin not a "Coreen", but prefer the spelling Corinne.

Will it be a nightmare for her having to correct people all the time if shes a Corinne pronounced Corin? Should we just spell it Corin? Will people assume she's a boy with that spelling?

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Corrin is popular here in Scotland but it's firmly a boys name. Doesn't strike me as unisex at all

happycamper11 · 28/09/2019 08:53

I'm not sure about other parts of the uk but we'd definitely pronounce Corrine cor - een here

MrsDimmond · 28/09/2019 09:01

happycamper11 I think most people would prounce Corrine with a long ee sound. OP is using double n spelling Corrinne.

MikeUniformMike · 28/09/2019 10:25

It's nice
I would pronounce both as CORR-in

Pippilsngstrumpfi · 28/09/2019 11:20

Corin = KOH rin

Corinne = Koh RINN

Corine = Koh-REEN

RuthW · 28/09/2019 15:35

Corin is a boy's name. Corinne is a girl's name. Both said the same.

Pippilsngstrumpfi · 28/09/2019 15:42

They're definitely NOT pronounced the same. Corin is Co rin but Corinne is Co RINN.

But yes, Corin is male, Corinne the female version.

MrsDimmond · 28/09/2019 16:25

They're definitely NOT pronounced the same.

Pippilsngstrumpfi, it doesn't matter how strongly you feel about the pronounciation, this thread has demonstrated unequivocally that different pronounciations are used out there in the real world.

There are many examples of people with the "same" name, spelled the same but pronounced differently. It's about usage not prescribed "correctness"

Loopytiles · 28/09/2019 16:27

I too went to school with a girl named Corinne, pronounced same as Corin, which IMO is a boys name.

BigGlasses · 28/09/2019 17:25

I don’t know any one with this name but reading it I would hazard a guess at Corin would be a boy pronounced Cauw- rain and Corinne/ Corine was a girl and would pronounce it Cauw-reen. But I would be happily/gratefully corrected and told how they preferred it to be pronounced and use that from then on.

FizzyGreenWater · 29/09/2019 10:39

Corinne would be Cor-een to me. Sorry but I think a lot of people will assume that.

Corin - boy's name

Biancadelrioisback · 29/09/2019 10:44

I had a girl Corin in my class at school...

Lavenderblues · 29/09/2019 10:49

Corin is a boy's name pronounced Cor in.

Corinne is s girls name pronounced Cor inn

And Coreen would be spelled Corine.

SlowasaSnail · 29/09/2019 10:54

It’s a French name so Corin is a boys name and Corinne is a girls name, both pronounced the same.

I know a Corinne and it is a lovely name but she has had a lifetime of people not being able to pronounce her name, never mind spell it.
Corrine is pronounced Coreen, without the hard N of Corinne.

WeshMaGueule · 29/09/2019 11:29

Never seen Corin used as a boy's name in over twenty years in France, and it wouldn't be pronounced the same as Corinne. Corin would be Cohran, Corinne is Cohreen. It's also very middle-aged and dowdy here.

Lavenderblues · 29/09/2019 12:08

It’s a French name so Corin is a boys name and Corinne is a girls name, both pronounced the same.

No would definitely not pronounced the same!

SlowasaSnail · 29/09/2019 13:05

I stand corrected Grin

Corinne is a French name, though?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/09/2019 13:07

My mum (70) is a 'Corin' spelt Corenne.

SilverChime · 29/09/2019 13:08

Corin = KOH rin Corinne = Koh RINN

I’d pronounce them this way too.

Antonin · 29/09/2019 13:08

Just to add to the confusion the song Corrina, Corrina is pronounced Cor— eena. The Variation later released by Dylan is Corrine , Corrina wither the former name pronounced Cor — een.
Personally I’d stick to Corin with a very feminine second name which would be used on official documents and leave nobody in doubt of her gender

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/09/2019 13:08

Grrr... auto correct. Its spelt Correne.

DownstairsMixUp · 29/09/2019 13:15

My friend is called Corinne. Though everyone calls her Reeney.

WeshMaGueule · 29/09/2019 13:30

Yes Corinne is a French name!

Lavenderblues · 29/09/2019 15:29

Corinne is French and Corinna is German. Both lovely girls names.

Corin seems masculine.

CharitySchmarity · 05/10/2019 16:50

Corin to me is a boy's name. I've only known one Corinne and she pronounced it the same as Corin (or was often known as Corrie too) - I sort of feel that to be pronounced CorEEN, it would have to have only one N in it.
