Spiritual middle name for Rio?

coconuttymummy · 27/09/2019 15:46

Our family has a tradition of 3 names, one of which is a name with a spiritual meaning (the other middle name is something of Irish/Gaelic/Celtic origin).

We’ve chosen his first name: Rio.
We’ve chosen his Irish roots middle name: Kian

But we can’t decide on the Spiritual flavoured middle name.

We prefer trendy, rather than traditional names.

We had chosen (and still LOVE) Cruz ....

.... but a few people commented that Rio Kian Cruz wasn’t a good choice (using Rio and Cruz together).

So we’re stuck for an alternative to Cruz?

Psalm is the only other option we’ve come up with, but we’re unsure.

Rio Kian Psalm? What do you think? 🤔

Do you have any other suggestions for trendy Spiritual middle names?

Rio Kian Matthew
Rio Kian Joshua
Rio Kian Jesse
Rio Kian Marcus
Rio Kian Elijah
Rio Kian Ezra

TeddyToaster · 27/09/2019 21:39

I know some of those are pretty traditional but my thought is that if your kid becomes a lawyer, do they have a name that would be considered 'appropriate'?! 😂

coconuttymummy · 27/09/2019 21:58

I quite like Jude. Rio Cian Jude could work. x

@coconuttymummy oh I wasn't suggesting Soraya as a first name! Just explaining that I love Raya/Reya so much that I almost made it part of my daughters first name! 😊

Dljlr · 27/09/2019 22:02

Quiche. The spiritually flavoured God of picnics.

coconuttymummy · 28/09/2019 00:25

Yep... Quiche is the one! 🙄

We’ve made an initial decision of Zayn - meaning Grace.

I think Rio Cian Zayn will work nicely with Brody Rocco Shea. Thank goodness for that!

Zayne and Zane mean Gift of God in Hebrew, apparently?

You can also spell it Zain, Zane, Zayne... allegedly! 😉

Which spelling do you prefer?

Sorry, I can't get Rocco Shea out of my mind, did no one say to you " but it sounds like ricochet" Smile

I think there are reasons traditional names continue and trendy names fade into the ether.

coconuttymummy · 28/09/2019 00:57

I think Zane might be our preferred spelling, as it means God is Gracious / Gift of God.

Or Zayn .. it’s between Zane & Zayn lol.

I'm curious why your family has made a tradition of having an "Irish//Gaelic/Celtic" middle name when you appear not to understand the cultures or language (and so clearly don't have such strong ties to Ireland)? Going by the fact that you all but bastardised a name anyway.

LarkDescending · 28/09/2019 06:04

Where have you got that meaning for Zayn (which is an Arabic, not Hebrew, name)?

If you want “Gift of God” in Hebrew the usual Anglicised versions are Nathaniel or Jonathan.

AuntieStella · 28/09/2019 06:17

"Can you use Eden for a boy? It sounds more feminine to me"

Yes, Eden is a traditional boys name

Just like Cruz is a girls (one of the appellations of The Virgin)

Would one of the lesser used saints or Biblical names appeal?

sashh · 28/09/2019 06:18

Ooh, I love Jobi!

I know you have already said know, but it is also the name of poo in some parts of the UK.

Does it have to be Judeo Christian spiritual? Norse and Greek gods can be great names.Odin, Loki, Tyr?

coconuttymummy · 28/09/2019 06:21

@whatausername I haven’t bastardised anything. I misspelled it when I wrote it.

How do you know we don’t have strong Celtic ties?! That’s a bit of a presumption! My partner is 3/4 Irish and I am 1/2 Belgian.

I appreciate honest replies, and I can take a bit of stick, but there’s a point where it just becomes plain rude.

@LarkDescending I googled the name Zayn in its various forms. Many sources said that Zayne, Zayn and Zain are Arabic and mean Beauty/Grace, whilst several said that Zayn and Zane mean Gift of God.

What is the meaning of Zane or Zayn, then?

Wolfff · 28/09/2019 06:27

I know a Kian with Irish parents living outside Ireland, precisely because Cian would be mispronounced anywhere else.

coconuttymummy · 28/09/2019 06:29

@sashh Not so much Norse/Pagan Gods for us, but anything Abrahamic would fit well, or modern interpretations of Christian style spirituality.. I’m not Muslim, but I have nothing against Arabic influences, per se, either. I’ve nothing against using names from any culture that pertain to God, virtues or the like. X

Just out of curiosity, how is your partner 3/4 Irish? I can't offer any advice on the names! Pp have corrected you with the Irish names so I won't.

coconuttymummy · 28/09/2019 07:19

My partner’s father is Irish and his mother was half Irish. Hence, my partner is 3/4 Irish. No?!

OP posts:
coconuttymummy · 28/09/2019 07:23

The reason I spelled Cian with a K in my original post is because, when we decided on the 2nd MN Of Cruz, the 2 Cs didn’t fit well together. When we googled the name an alternative spelling with a K came up, with the same meaning, so we chose to use the alternative spelling because of this.

I much prefer it the traditional spelling.

With regards to Shea, I mis-spelled it in my post.

OP posts:
coconuttymummy · 28/09/2019 07:24

Sorry for the typo. That was meant to read... I much prefer the traditional spelling (with a C).

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 28/09/2019 08:02

Eh no I wouldn't call that 3/4 Irish

Wolfff · 28/09/2019 08:35

Why does it matter if OP’s partner identifies as 3/4 Irish?
