Do you like or dislike the name Madeleine and either way why? We both love it but for some reason just doesn’t quite feel perfect!

Madeleine is beautiful. Timeless.

fromthefloorboardsup · 21/09/2019 23:13

I prefer Madeleine. Not really sure why - it just looks nicer to me

fromthefloorboardsup · 21/09/2019 23:13

Sorry I thought you were asking Madeleine or Madeline. I do like it as a name in general

DramaAlpaca · 21/09/2019 23:15

It's not a name I'm fond of. I slightly prefer the Madeleine spelling & pronunciation.

Louisaouisa · 21/09/2019 23:16

I prefer Madeleine but I do like both spellings and pronunciations

Leftielefterson · 21/09/2019 23:21

A beautiful name. I prefer Madeleine spelling

Cbeebiesrehab · 21/09/2019 23:24

I’m not keen sorry as I dislike the diminutive Maddie/Maddy, which I feel is inevitable.

mathanxiety · 21/09/2019 23:31

Love it. Prefer the Madeleine spelling.

Iwillbemrsminty · 21/09/2019 23:32

One of my twins is Madeleine Smile so probably biased but always loved it. We went for the Madeleine spelling as the other didn't look right.

ariamontgomery · 22/09/2019 07:56

I used to love it but don’t anymore - it just reminds me of Madeleine McCann and makes me feel sad.

mindproject · 22/09/2019 08:00

I don't like it as a name. It also reminds me of MM, a name with such a sad story attached.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 22/09/2019 08:00

I think they will sadly always carry the burden of people saying "ooh, like Madeline McCann?"

I'm sure I've seen thread on here from people with that name having "jokes" ("ooh we found her!") Or people grabbing them to look into their eyes and all such rubbish, despite being obviously a different generation even. You can bet your bottom dollar another public appeal or book wilI come out and refresh everybody's "cleverness". I couldn't put up with that.

Clayplease · 22/09/2019 08:03

I love it. I also like Matilda with Tilly as a nickname. Personally I think the MM connection will lessen over time and there is usually something less desirable about any name if you look into it. It wouldn't stop me using it.

bridgetreilly · 22/09/2019 09:39

I like it and I really don't think the link to Madeleine McCann is a problem for children being born now.

I would pronounce Madeleine and Madeline slightly differently.

Grufallosfriends · 22/09/2019 12:11

In French (as it's a French name) Madeleine sounds beautiful. The emphasis is on the last syllable -EINE.

In English it sounds awful as people tend to emphasise the MAD part.

And I hate Maddie.

Grufallosfriends · 22/09/2019 12:12

I would pronounce Madeleine and Madeline slightly differently.

Very differently!

Slappadabass · 22/09/2019 12:14

I like it, it's sweet but it reminds me of McCann. I saw a post on here by a adult Madeline that said all she ever gets is comments about Madeline McCann, that would put me off.
Matilda is similar and lovely!

MrsEricBana · 22/09/2019 12:24

Sorry it makes me feel sad too.

MikeUniformMike · 22/09/2019 14:27

The Madeleine spelling. Not keen on Maddie.
Sadly, too closely associated with M. McCann.

AverageMummy · 22/09/2019 14:58

Madeleine is lovely & as sad as the MM case it, their generation won’t have heard of her.

Hippobag · 22/09/2019 15:30

Much prefer Madeleine to Madeline although you'll get people spelling it the latter way anyway

MrsGilly1 · 24/09/2019 01:07

Madeleine spelling x

How about Madeleine Lucy? X

ElfishBiatch · 24/09/2019 01:23

I like it, but I never know how to pronounce it.

To rhyme with cane, tin or mine?!

Marcipex · 24/09/2019 01:31

I like both but prefer Madeleine.

Whoops75 · 24/09/2019 01:34

I love it

Preferred spelling is Madeleine

Other spelling is more ‘line’ sounding at the end.
