Nina

So DH and I both like Nina but I'd prefer it if it was a shortened version. Problem is I'm struggling to think of names that can be shortened to Nina. Not a fan of Georgia or Antonia. Anyone got any suggestions that we may not have thought of?

Christina?

I do think Nina is a great name in its own right

Ginger1982 · 21/09/2019 19:44

Georgina? Georgiana? Catarina? Catriona/Catrina?

My friend has a DD called Nina as a full name and it's lovely.

Nina! As it stands! Gorgeous.

atleastimhousetrained · 21/09/2019 19:44

I love Nina! One of my all time favourites since Truly, Madly, Deeply. Can’t think of a longer version though,

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/09/2019 19:46

I love Nina just as it is, beautiful name.

Atlasta · 21/09/2019 19:46

Nina as it is.

Peony99 · 21/09/2019 19:46

Love Nina, and I think it works well on its own.

The only Nina I know is short for Janina (Polish, pronounces Yanina), which I don't like as much.

Stravapalava · 21/09/2019 19:49

Why not just Nina? It is a real name, one of my favourites at the moment. Although, here are some names I know of / have heard:

Antonina
Janina
Penina
Yonina

Not as nice as Nina in it's own right though, IMO.

WombatStewForTea · 21/09/2019 19:54

We may end up going with just Nina. It's just that our surname is quite short and sounds better with a longer first name

I think Nina is a lovely name just by itself

Emelene · 21/09/2019 20:06

Just Nina! It's lovely.

DramaAlpaca · 21/09/2019 20:51

Just Nina is perfect. Balance it with a longer middle name, maybe.

StealthPussy · 21/09/2019 20:57

Nina is lovely.
Maybe Ninette or Karenina?

Louisaouisa · 21/09/2019 23:22

Nina goes the siren

Emmeline is lovely & could work too

AverageMummy · 22/09/2019 17:27

Clementina

FizzyGreenWater · 22/09/2019 19:03

Nina alone is fab, but how about Georgina?

MikeUniformMike · 22/09/2019 20:51

Nina is enough on it's own.
Unless you go for a longer name with the -nina (e.g. Antonina) ending it will seem weird.
Georgina, Christina etc do not imply a nn of Nina

whatausername · 23/09/2019 12:55

Could not agree more with @MikeUniformMike. Christina, Emmeline...it's beyond a stretch to get Nina as a diminutive from them imo.

whatausername · 23/09/2019 12:57

P.S. Nina is lovely

NoSquirrels · 23/09/2019 13:00

Karenina is the only thing I think works.

BelfortGabbz · 23/09/2019 16:33

Adina

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2019 17:21

Karenina is pronounced Kar-EN-in-a not Karen-EE-na.

FizzyGreenWater · 23/09/2019 17:34

You can have a nn from anything though.

The trouble is getting it to stick if you try and force one, so it is easier if it's the obvious nn, eg Becky from Rebecca.

But I know plenty of people with slightly off-piste nns so yes you could certainly give a name like Emmeline then always call her Nina and it would probably work. But if that's the case, you really might as well call her Nina and be done with it!

I've only ever heard Karenina pronounced Karry-ninna.
