Hiya,

Thoughts on the name Ambrose for a boy please?

Rice

1Bobbinwinder · 18/09/2019 16:18

I think it's cute. A bit silly but I think it's a name someone could pull off if you liked them. What are you thinking for nicknames?

MikeUniformMike · 18/09/2019 16:20

The welsh version of Ambrose is Emrys (pron. EM-riss), and is much nicer.

Lalafelpotato · 18/09/2019 16:49

Emrys is nice, my name is Emma though... Do you think that's too many Em's? lol! xx

Ambrose is lovely. Much nicer than Emrys.

MikeUniformMike · 18/09/2019 17:00

Don't tell me, your OH is called Rhys. Smile

daisypond · 18/09/2019 17:11

I’m not keen. I think of rice too. But I’ve never known anyone with the name. Maybe it could grow on me. Was there one in The Archers? Why would a nickname be needed?

Lalafelpotato · 18/09/2019 17:22

Nicknames i'm stuck on but that could be a good thing that it doesn't get shortened? what do you think? x

Ones i can think of are: Amby, Brosy, Bo, Bram, Ro :/ not sure lol

Not to my taste (no pun intended).

Spieluhr · 18/09/2019 17:34

I don't think it needs a nickname,

pumkinspicetime · 18/09/2019 17:56

I suspect he would be nn rice at school but I actually rather like it as a name.

ParanoidGynodroid · 18/09/2019 18:37

I think it's lovely!

Terramirabilis · 18/09/2019 18:50

We used it as a middle name. Not the same impact as a first name of course. We're not in the UK so no one would think of rice. I liked the story of St. Ambrose and his connection to St Augustine. I think it's an elegant name.

Musmerian · 18/09/2019 18:53

It’s a great name. Ignore the rice comments. Those kind of associations would make lots of lovely names off limits, like Flora. When I called my son Edmund everyone said he would get blackadder comments all the time- he doesn’t. Aubrey is similar and also lovely imo.

octoberismytime · 18/09/2019 19:01

I think it’s a really feminine sounding name for a man.
Amb- makes me think of Amber
Rose- speaks for itself!

I can’t imagine a builder or mechanic with a name like this. I think they’d have the piss taken out of them to be honest...

Nonameyet1 · 18/09/2019 19:05

Not for me

Grufallosfriends · 18/09/2019 19:16

I like it! Classic and timeless.

Lalafelpotato · 18/09/2019 19:19

It's so odd that we all get different imagery with names! Ambrose sounds farmer-y to me :')

Oooh, this was top of my boys' names list. Needless to say, I love it. Had DDs though...

ColaFreezePop · 18/09/2019 19:30

Good West Indian name - though only if you are aged 80+.

You also may find random old people telling you that was their grandfather's name.

BlueWonder · 18/09/2019 19:32

Really solid but slightly unusual name without going too far.

jitterbugg · 18/09/2019 19:39

I thought it was for a girl when I saw the title Blush as it seems like a mash up of Amber and Rose. Then there’s the custard connotation.
I really dislike it OP

jitterbugg · 18/09/2019 19:39

@octoberismytime didn’t see your reply, exactly my thoughts!

hightymike · 18/09/2019 19:40

I think it would be beautiful for a girl - it sounds very feminine to me.

Arkbuilder · 18/09/2019 19:41

Abraham?
