Thoughts on Winifred shortened to Winnie.

I imagine most won't like it but I can just picture a little toddler Winifred. Not sure it would be liked as a teenager but Winnie surely wouldn't stand out amongst the Connie's, Millie's, Frankie's etc

It wouldn’t be my choice, but I can imagine a cool little Winnie. My friend has a Wifred and I don’t like the name but he is such a sweetie and it’s just his name - I don’t think “ugh what a terrible name” when I see him, it’s just his name. I think I’d feel the same about a Winifred.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 12/09/2019 19:59

I love it

TheRLodger · 12/09/2019 20:17

I actually quite like it. I probably wouldn’t choose it myself but I’d entertain the idea

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 12/09/2019 20:43

The more I say it the more it grows on me. Love its Welsh origin. An alternative is Millicent.

TFSRM · 12/09/2019 20:56

I love it and either Winnie or Freddie as nicknames. Go for it.

sorrythisusernameisinuse · 12/09/2019 21:12

I went to a school with a girl from China called Winnie and I've always absolutely loved the name!

ChChChChangez · 12/09/2019 21:15

Very cute.

Raaaaaah · 12/09/2019 21:23

It was my darling Grandmas name. She hated it and always went by her middle name. I like it and wish that I had used it as a middle name for one of our girls. But I have form for Grannyish and unusual names.

teddybearsbear · 12/09/2019 21:56

I love it and very nearly used it for my DD.

CassianAndor · 12/09/2019 21:58

Awful, but the achingly hip wannabes seem to be trying to reclaim it.

Ugly and old fashioned for a reason. See also Olive and Joan.

Reminds me of the shining
Oh and the elephant in jungle book

milliefiori · 12/09/2019 22:02

I love it. Winnie is cute and Freddie is great.

Bapman · 12/09/2019 22:03

It’s really cute. And old lady names are back in, So it’s not super out there

gnushoes · 12/09/2019 22:06

Everyone saying it's cute or hip for a teenager - how about for a young woman in the workplace?

Leaveitout · 12/09/2019 22:09

I really don't think old ladies names are in Confused

IreneWinters · 12/09/2019 22:21

I’m currently rewatching Angel with DD1. Fred is a very cool character. I was thinking the other day that her name has grown on me a lot. I’m not keen on Winnie as a nickname though - Winnie the Pooh and Winnie the Witch aren’t great connotations for small children.

That said, I said think my grandmothers’ names were pretty awesome - Ethel and Gertrude - so maybe don’t take advice on names from me.

Raaaaaah · 12/09/2019 22:26

Cassian the name my Grandma chose to use instead was one of the names you reference. She may as well have stuck with Winifred Grin.

Lillygreen · 12/09/2019 22:33

I really like it! Prefer the nn Winnie. But Winnifred gives the option of Freddie, which I also love and is androgynous.

Youmeandthesea · 12/09/2019 22:38

I like it! Winnie and Winifred

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 12/09/2019 22:41

Aw reminds me of my great Aunty Smile

Fifthtimelucky · 12/09/2019 23:14

The Pooh?

The only Winifreds I know shortened their names to Win or Freddie.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 13/09/2019 04:47

“Welcome to PWC Winifred, before we introduce you to colleagues and clients, is it Winifred you’re known as or....?”

-“Everyone knows me as Freddie so....”

“Lovely, I’ll tell Karen in HR to note that for reference”

Voilà

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 13/09/2019 04:48

Personally I am on the fence about it as to me Winnie makes me think of the despicable Winnie Mandela but I love Freddie

MaidenMotherCrone · 13/09/2019 05:09

No from me. Saint Winifred, virgin martyr, head chopped off, uncle Saint Bueno found it and stuck it back on and all was well again.

Her shrine in Holywell, Flintshire very much in use.

If I remember correctly the local primary school 'St Winifred's' sang that awful song back in the day 'Grandma we love you'.

It's a biddy name.
