Winifred

Thoughts on Winifred shortened to Winnie.

I imagine most won't like it but I can just picture a little toddler Winifred. Not sure it would be liked as a teenager but Winnie surely wouldn't stand out amongst the Connie's, Millie's, Frankie's etc

I love it! But I would use Freddy as the nn.

Howtotrainyourhamster · 12/09/2019 17:17

Don’t like it, it’s just not a pretty sound. One of my kids has a Winnie in their class and try as I might I still don’t like it. It’s a name that is not even redeemed from ugliness by association with a child ‘making it their own.’

RoseMartha · 12/09/2019 17:19

I also dislike it.

Like @LarkDescending , I too had an elderly relative who had that for a first name and always used her middle name instead.

AwkwardSquad · 12/09/2019 17:20

I love it, I think it’s an excellent name. But just in case you’d like an alternative, how about Bronwyn? That could still give you Winnie as a shortened version.

WaynettaSlobOnTheSchoolRun · 12/09/2019 17:23

I know one in a toddler group I go to. (Herts, if it makes a difference). It's ok.

Bonkersblond · 12/09/2019 17:26

Just no, was my grandmothers name, for extra effect add Gertrude as a middle name, for years I was told these were my middle names after my GM, not quite sure if this was a joke or to keep GM quiet that her name was being carried on, I can not tell you how I hated them.

Chickydoo · 12/09/2019 17:31

I adore it!!!!! Gorgeous, sweet.
Wanted it for DD but vetoed by DH, although he was crumbling towards the end, nearly got my way.

DramaAlpaca · 12/09/2019 18:03

Just awful. I couldn't inflict that on a child.

Orangeleavez · 12/09/2019 18:12

Sorry but this is simply a hideous name with no redeeming features.
It is frumpy and ugly sounding and a noise a horse makes if you nn it.
I have no idea how it could be seen as a nice name.

StrictlyComeMarie · 12/09/2019 18:47

Yes go for it!

Minty82 · 12/09/2019 18:56

I know two small Winnies - one is just Winnie and one is Winifred. I wouldn’t choose it myself but don’t see anything wrong with it! The full name is fabulously 1930s maiden auntish/Malory Towersesque, and the shortening is sweet.

Icantthinkofanynewnames · 12/09/2019 19:01

LOVE Winnie! Not so sure about Winifred... I wouldn’t be brave enough to use it but Winnie is fab x

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/09/2019 19:01

It's lovely. I have a aunt called Winnie.

soundsystem · 12/09/2019 19:05

I like it, and it's on our list too.

TamarindCove · 12/09/2019 19:05

Dreadful

Oranginna · 12/09/2019 19:06

Would you yourself like to be called Winifred, OP?

If I met someone else called Winifred I would think it was very cool, but I'm not sure I would be brave enough to choose it for myself.

BrendasUmbrella · 12/09/2019 19:30

She'll almost definitely end up choosing Freddie as a nickname over Winnie.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 12/09/2019 19:32

Winifred is alright. Could be cool and unusual on a teenager, and Fred as a nickname is pretty cool, but Winnie just reminds me of Winnie the Pooh.

LateMumma · 12/09/2019 19:36

Love it, ace name!

BetweenTheMoon · 12/09/2019 19:36

I absolutely LOVE it. It was one of my first choices but my best friends Nan was called Winifred nn. Winnie and she said it has always been top of her list.

A name is a name, doesn't matter how 'old' it is, it can be used again in any generation.

Go for it OP.

ncqtime · 12/09/2019 19:38

Love it. Hate Winnie though. Fred is much better.

saffy1234 · 12/09/2019 19:43

Love it,was in my shortlist for my DD ,but my husband preferred Dorothy x

Shopkinsdoll · 12/09/2019 19:45

Dear god no.

haverhill · 12/09/2019 19:46

Wynne?

Bubblysqueak · 12/09/2019 19:47

I like it.
