Got a feeling this might divide mumsnet! Grin My husband suggested it. I like it but it's unusual and wonder what people think of it?

I think of Boris Johnson's first wife. The 'most beautiful' girl at Oxford in her time there (actually, a bit insipid). Half English/half Italian.

Orangeleavez · 09/09/2019 18:32

midsomermurderess oh gosh you're right! Remember reading an article about her.... Bit of a non article.

OK so my concern is the USA medicine connection. What is the medication for? Out of curiosity more than anything.
Is it well known as a medicine in US?

Thank you x

Austin Allegra ?

diddlediddle · 09/09/2019 18:49

I don't think it has negative connotations despite what everyone is saying. It's posh and horsey yes but no harm in trying to change that.

What about Athena?

Orangeleavez · 09/09/2019 19:20

I like that it's unusual and I get the whole posh/horsey thing but yeah I reckon I could give it a rough edge Wink

I like it

ArthuriaAugustaDarcy · 09/09/2019 21:00

I am awfully posh, but I wouldn't choose Allegra. It makes me think of ritenuto or sosteuto or some such.

If I had another DD to name, I think I would name her Gertrude, nn Gertie, as I have used up all the names I like.

Orangeleavez · 09/09/2019 21:02

Not sure about Anthea. Seems a bit of an older name.

Really Grin? I'm intrigued how you measure poshness?! I'm not British so am fascinated by this strange class system!

diddlediddle · 09/09/2019 21:30

Athena not Anthea!

Leftielefterson · 09/09/2019 21:30

Really like it. It’s on my list.

Morado · 09/09/2019 22:16

Love it!

campion · 09/09/2019 22:49

There was a thread about Gertrude a little while back.
It didn't go well (for Gertrudes)

And it's decidely not posh by anyone's definition of the word!

ArthuriaAugustaDarcy · 09/09/2019 22:49

@Lavenderblues Oh goodness, it's hard to explain to someone who isn't British. All I can say is that you should probably be grateful that you aren't!

BoogieFeet · 09/09/2019 22:53

Love it

ArthuriaAugustaDarcy · 09/09/2019 22:55

I'm still defending Gertrude, Campion. I haven't used it, sadly, as I didn't have enough DDs to get to that stage, but it's hardly Maddison or Lexie or Teagan.

campion · 09/09/2019 23:03

No,that's true, ArthuriaAugustaDarcy; Gertrude's worse.

I know a Teagan who is known as Tiggy, which has very upmarket connections.

Still,I don't wish to detail the thread and I like Allegro.

campion · 09/09/2019 23:06

Allegra. ..even.

AutocorrectHmm

ArthuriaAugustaDarcy · 09/09/2019 23:10

Campion, that is heresy. But we will have to agree to disagree on Gertie.

Tiggy is fine. Teagan is not. Though, again, that's just my opinion. I am quite sure people would judge my choice of names for my children too. I don't have any strong feelings about Allegra (Leggy?), beyond the musical musings I mentioned upthread.

campion · 09/09/2019 23:25

I think you do actually mean allegro if you're talking musical terms.

I'm musing about your DDs names now though ...but I'm sure they're better than GertieWink

ArthuriaAugustaDarcy · 09/09/2019 23:30

I'm now wondering about Alegretto for a little one, Campion (I'm a musician, btw). I fear you might think my DC's names are even worse than Gertie Grin.

thebakerwithboobs · 09/09/2019 23:30

We have a little Allegra next door, called Ally by her sisters. I think it's lovely.

WelshCountryBumpkin · 10/09/2019 10:57

@MikeUniformMike @Orangeleavez The downside of my name is that when you google it, I'm the first to appear haha! It's an old Cornish name, and SUCH a good icebreaker which was brilliant when I was a very shy child. It instantly gave me something I could talk about with people. I'm determined to give my baby an equally obscure name, just so they have their own icebreakers :-)

MikeUniformMike · 10/09/2019 18:36

Do tell.I'm curious.

Orangeleavez · 10/09/2019 19:47

WelshCountryBumpkin so intruiged!

I really am starting to want a less common name for my baby. My name was rather unknown back in the day and has grown and grown. Love my name BUT always felt it'd be nice to have a more unusual name.

My husband is really keen on Allegra. I don't want to regret playing it safe.
I can only imagine how my family will react Shock
