Goldie was DH GM name, she’s wonderful and we love the name. He would love to use it for DD. We’ve had very positive reactions from family who knew GM.

Thoughts?

MohairMenace I agree, he's fucking brilliant. Still no the the name though.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 29/08/2019 00:07

I mainly remember him being not as good as I thought he'd be on Strictly.

My first thought is a Jewish grandma, closely followed by Goldie Hawn. I don't dislike if, but I think it might sound odd with some surnames.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 00:12

Goldie is a hamster name. Awful and I assumed a joke when I saw the thread title.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 00:13

And my neighbour's golden retriever is called Goldie

Nicetablecloth · 29/08/2019 00:15

Dog
Gotta be a joke?
Dog

MrsFogi · 29/08/2019 00:16

I thought of the Blue Peter dog from my childhood.

Chocmallows · 29/08/2019 00:17

Labrador

whattodo2019 · 29/08/2019 00:32

Golden retriever popped into my head...

loubuch09 · 29/08/2019 07:48

I have a name thread trying to name our DD3 and Goldie/Golda is on our list....it gets so much negativity but I think its spunky, feminine and unusual.
Marigold is pretty but cant stop thinking of rubber gloves i think if i were to use it I'd put Golda on birth certificate and call her Goldie I actually feel like I should say its horrible to keep it for myself Haha.
If it is a family name too I think you should be brave and go for it.
Our DDs have family names and I've never regretted despite lots of negativity to esp Kathleen whom we call Kitty/ Kit I actually still LOVE it and think it is beautiful. Screw the haters.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2019 07:52

Or there was this chap
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldie_(eagle)

It's nice nickname for a golden haired child.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/08/2019 07:58

Kitty is lovely - and it's a nn. Goldie is a step too far - as a given name.

Thing is, nns don't even have to relate to the given name at all. Any blonde child, or one who's won a gold medal, or... whatever excuse you like, could be known as Goldie.

But you could get a 'Go' sound from Margot, or a 'gold' meaning from Aurelia, or think of any (plant with a) yellow flower - Jasmine, Willow, Tulip, Iris (the yellow kind), Buttercup...

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2019 07:59

What was her actual name?

MemorialBeach · 29/08/2019 08:05

I am probably the only person here whose first thought was Goldie Sayers the javelin thrower. Yes, there was a Blue Peter dog of that name, but I still do quite like it for a child/person.

Nicetablecloth · 29/08/2019 08:12

I actually feel like I should say its horrible to keep it for myself Haha.

I don't think you need to worry too much about a sudden rush to name loads of DC's Goldie!

TheCheeseAlarm · 29/08/2019 08:13

My first thought was also Goldie Sayers. She always seems lovely when she's interviewed. Definitely a positive association.

user1493494961 · 29/08/2019 09:28

Goldie Sayers' real name though is Katherine, which proves Lottie's point that a nn doesn't have to relate to a given name.

Antonin · 29/08/2019 12:12

Do you have Jewish connections OP? Goldie was generally used by Jewish families. Golda Meier was an Israeli prime minister.
Other than that the name has just the metal colour associations.
Your idea is a lovely one but maybe give your DD the name as a second name or just a nn

ForGoodnessCake · 29/08/2019 13:57

LOVE..........

daisypond · 29/08/2019 14:08

Hm, it’s a very Jewish name to me and might seem odd to use if you have no links. But it’s fine. I prefer Gilda.

bobstersmum · 29/08/2019 14:10

I wouldn't.

AverageMummy · 29/08/2019 18:23

What about as a nickname for a more normal name?
Gwendolyn
Geraldine
Glendora
Grizelda

RainbowJumpers · 30/08/2019 19:52

Blue Peter dog.

FatherFintanFay · 30/08/2019 21:18

What's the likelihood she'll be blonde? Are you and/or your husband fair? Tbh I think an olive-skinned brunette called Goldie would look like she'd been called that as a sort of ironic nickname, like a short man called Lofty.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/08/2019 21:23

I also thought of the character from Hollyoaks. She’s not a pleasant character...

mulberrybag · 30/08/2019 21:40

It's beautiful. So what if it's only Goldie Hawn that is known for the name ? So what if people identify it as a Blue Peter dog name, surely it's ok to break the mould a bit and not take one of the hundreds of overused names ?! Btw can you tell i love it ?Grin
