The name Thea - is it a bit "out there"

We absolutely adore the name Thea for a girl

But I'm wondering if it's a little "out there" for some. Namely DGP's who all prefer simple names which you don't need to clarify the pronunciation of or the spelling. It's mostly PIL that I'm worried about. I know shouldn't care, but I doGrin

So have you heard this name much?

Would you give it a thumbs up?

Would you know how to pronounce and spell it without having to ask?

TIA

Thea is hugely popular where I am it would literally be considered the complete opposite of an out there name.

I'm not sure why anyone would find it difficult to pronounce or spell for anyone let alone grand parents its a pretty bog standard and pretty old name really so I'm sure they would be fine.

I think you are vastly overthinking it.

ILoveAnOwl · 24/08/2019 10:21

It's what we were going to call our daughter (short for Dorothea) and I still sort of regret that we changed our minds at the last minute!

Beautiful name and I don't think 'out there'.

MyNewBearTotoro · 24/08/2019 10:27

Thea is a fairly common name around here and I know plenty of children plus a few teens and adults called Thea. I wouldn’t see it as at all ‘out there,’ it’s a nice known name without being completely overused.

Robs20 · 24/08/2019 10:28

Yes. Not that unusual. I have a friend named thea and know 2 babies with this name.

SierraNevada · 24/08/2019 10:31

I’ve only ever known one Thea (I’m in my late 50s) but really love the name. I think it suits all ages. Yes there are more little Theas’ around now but I wouldn’t let that put you off as you both love it,

breaconoptimist · 24/08/2019 10:32

There are tonnes of Theo’s near us and a Thea. I don’t think it’s hard to spell as nice and short.

AverageMummy · 24/08/2019 10:38

I’ve never met one but I love it.
I also love Theodora / Dorothea / Althea
I think Thea as a stand-alone is the least ‘out there’ being a top 100 name.
Lovely choice

gwilt · 24/08/2019 10:38

Easy to say, easy to spell, and the name of a delightful girl I know :)

Honkytonkdoda · 24/08/2019 10:39

I don’t know any but it’s definitely still not ‘out there’
Also I always see it mentioned on baby name threads

HeadintheiClouds · 24/08/2019 10:40

Out there?? Hardly 😂. It’s a very pretty name, go for it.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 24/08/2019 10:41

Definitely not ‘out there’ - it seems to be increasingly popular!

I’d pronounce it Th-EE-a, though I’m aware some people pronounce it Tay-a.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 24/08/2019 10:42

It's really common, in both senses, where I'm from

LarkDescending · 24/08/2019 10:44

Definitely not “out there” - very much of the moment. Presumably following on from the popularity of Theo for boys over the last few years.

Mitebiteatnite · 24/08/2019 10:45

I know 4 women called Thea, all in their mid thirties. I think it's lovely, but then all theas I know are lovely women, if they were total bitches I might not like it so much!

userabcname · 24/08/2019 10:46

Very popular I'd say. I know quite a few.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 24/08/2019 10:47

Not unusual at all,pretty name.

gotmychocolateimgood · 24/08/2019 10:48

My friends granddaughter is Thea Pearl. I love it

Cobblersandhogwash · 24/08/2019 10:54

Love it. Not out there at all.

ReasonedCamper · 24/08/2019 10:58

It is a great name.

Are you planning Taya or Thee-uh as the pronunciation? People do use both, I like Taya, but there’s will be those who will say Thee-uh on first reading.

Lovely name, go for it.

Starryskiesinthesky · 24/08/2019 11:00

Funnily enough i saw this morning on a Scottish baby name list it was the most popular girls name in East Lothian last year!

BelulahBlanca · 24/08/2019 11:02

It’s become really popular lately, I think it’s beautiful

Cbeebiesrehab · 24/08/2019 11:03

I know two babies in the last month born and named Thea. Wouldn’t class it as out there at all.

Dixywitch19 · 24/08/2019 11:07

My Dsd is a Thea. We have issues of people saying 'fea' instead of Thea, and alot of people going 'what?' When you say her name.
I personally think it's a marmite name, people either love it or really dislike it.

Chitarra · 24/08/2019 11:10

I like this name. I only know one person called Thea - she's in her 40s and pronounces it Tia. I also know a dog called Tia and pronounced Tia!

chicken2015 · 24/08/2019 11:11

We named our little girl Thea Gracie 6 months ago i love the name!!
