The name Thea - is it a bit "out there"

We absolutely adore the name Thea for a girl

But I'm wondering if it's a little "out there" for some. Namely DGP's who all prefer simple names which you don't need to clarify the pronunciation of or the spelling. It's mostly PIL that I'm worried about. I know shouldn't care, but I doGrin

So have you heard this name much?

Would you give it a thumbs up?

Would you know how to pronounce and spell it without having to ask?

TIA

Totally not out there l don’t think. Quite popular is my understanding

daisypond · 24/08/2019 11:12

Definitely not not too out there. I know Theas in every age group, including adults, and several in their teens.

Astronica · 24/08/2019 11:23

Not out there. Listed at no 51 in popular baby names in UK for 2018.

Oopsy41 · 24/08/2019 11:25

I agree with others, don't think it's out there at all. I think it's a lovely name but is fairly common. My daughters 14 and has three friends called Thea

Oysterbabe · 24/08/2019 11:29

It's having a real surge in popularity.

I love it. I'm Australian but have a Scottish cousin with the name Thea. If it didn't rhyme with my surname I would have considered it for my children.

Whoops75 · 24/08/2019 11:38

I like it also like Rhea

pikapikachu · 24/08/2019 11:39

Not out there at all- especially if you pick Thea over longer names like Dorothea.

Chanellta · 24/08/2019 11:40

Very pretty name and not at all out there

bridgetreilly · 24/08/2019 11:43

If you're worried about what people will think, don't announce the name until your daughter is born and then present it as a done deal. They won't have a chance to express any disapproval.

Helenluvsrob · 24/08/2019 11:44

Wow ! It was “ out there “ in 1993 when eldest was born but it’s funny now we can sit in a park and almost always she wonders who is shouting her only to see a 2yr old wander to the voice !

chicken2015 · 24/08/2019 12:25

However my husband does have difficulty pronouncing it! He says Fea not Thea as in Thursday and not fear

Esto · 24/08/2019 12:32

I know two little Theas but I would be worried about some people I know who pronounce it like chicken's husband with an f sound.

roisinagusniamh · 24/08/2019 12:43

It's really popular, not at all out there!

Bourbonbiccy · 24/08/2019 12:47

Definitely not "out there" it's really common now. Even if it was out there, if you and your hubby like it, go for it.

Family will soon get used to it, although my Nan (94) still couldn't come around to our sons name (called it a stupid name and we should have used a name like Paul or John) she had Dementia so would tell me this every time I spoke his name 😂😂😂😂

Choose what you like, not what others like.

katesalwayslate · 24/08/2019 13:57

I don’t think it’s at all out there. It’s short, very popular and easy to spell. I’d say it’s the opposite of out there!

WhyBirdStop · 24/08/2019 13:59

I know 3 under 5 and I don't know many children, so I don't think it's out there at all.

Expressedways · 24/08/2019 14:02

It’s a pretty name but it’s the polar opposite of out there!

DramaAlpaca · 24/08/2019 14:05

It's very popular on MN for reasons I cannot fathom, but I've never come across one in real life. I'm going against most people on here when I say it's a thumbs down from me. I don't like the sound or how it looks written down, it's bit insubstantial or something.

Socksontheradiator · 24/08/2019 14:06

How would you pronounce it, OP?
I was at school with an Anthea in the 70s. So I would pronounce it like that unless advised otherwise.
Either way, I think it's a pretty name. I know two Tia's.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 24/08/2019 14:29

If you live in the SE then I'd give it a miss as she'll be known as Fresh.

Socksontheradiator · 24/08/2019 14:34

Why Fresh?

Cookit · 24/08/2019 14:35

I like it and I’ve seen it suggested and mentioned on MN a lot. Never actually met one in real life though.

Dizzywizz · 24/08/2019 14:37

Fresh??

rededucator · 24/08/2019 14:37

I'm a teacher and have taught 2 over the past three years. Lovely name though not uncommon.
