Not pregnant but came across this spelling. It’s more straight forward than isla /ails/Ayla.

What do you think

I know an Iyla. Everyone assumes the I is an L and calls her Lyla. So I’d stick to Isla.

TwigTheWonderKid · 18/08/2019 14:20

That everyone will think it's a mispelling of Lyla

TheFairyCaravan · 18/08/2019 14:22

No. Why people have to mess about with the spellings of names is beyond me.

I've got a perfectly normal, common 1970s/80s name that my parents decided to spell slightly differently. It's a pain in the tits. I've spent my whole life having to say my name then automatically spell it or having to correct people and then I feel rude.

MrsDimmond · 18/08/2019 14:24

Looks like Lyla

sandyfoot · 18/08/2019 14:25

I maybe doesn't help that you missed the capital letter on Isla but I read Iyla as Lyla too. Who could be bothered spending their whole life with people getting their name wrong when there's already a perfectly good spelling of Isla out there

pikapikachu · 18/08/2019 14:25

I would assume Lyla with a small L.

Scabetty · 18/08/2019 14:26

Isla is the best spelling imho.

AdelaideK · 18/08/2019 14:26

I don't like it but I don't like unusual spellings.

Isla is a pretty name and common enough that people would know how to pronounce it. It doesn't need to be made easier.

Scabetty · 18/08/2019 14:26

I would see Lyla not Iyla too.

HMArsey · 18/08/2019 14:27

Isla is a really popular name, everyone knows how to spell it.

ArfArfBarf · 18/08/2019 14:27

Ayla works (but maybe just because I know of someone with this spelling) but I’m not sure about Iyla looks like it would be pronounces IL-EE-YA and in some typefaces it’s hard to tell if it’s meant to be Lyla.

washyourface · 18/08/2019 14:27

Why change a perfectly good and acceptable spelling of a name?

Tefiti2 · 18/08/2019 14:28

People will just think it is Lyla without a capital L. Ayla is another name in its own right btw - not pronounced at all like Isla.

BlackCatSleeping · 18/08/2019 14:28

I also thought you typed Lyla.

I think you should probably not subject your child to a lifetime of it’s an I not an L.

Frith2013 · 18/08/2019 14:29

No.

PotteringAlong · 18/08/2019 14:30

No. It’s not more straightforward, it’s wrong.

I assumed Lyla too, as will most people. Isla is not exactly complicated.

Youwillneverwalkalone12 · 18/08/2019 14:33

Ok was just curious, I’m dyslexic so try to spell names that are how it is pronounced but can now see how Iyla will cause confusion.

Everyone knows how to pronounce Isla
Confused it's a perfectly normal name.

I read your title quickly and read Lyla.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/08/2019 14:35

Sorry, also read it as Lyla without a capital letter.

Frith2013 · 18/08/2019 14:36

You could have Aisle-er. Handy if she works in Sainsbury’s.

Flowerspowersy · 18/08/2019 14:42

Ayla is the most phonetic spelling.

Isla is pronounced Ees-la in Spanish.

Youwillneverwalkalone12 · 18/08/2019 14:46

Also why does the name have a s in it.
What would be the correct spelling if it wasn’t isla

Ila?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/08/2019 14:49

Island and isle both have a silent s. The Scottish island Islay ditto. I assume the name Isla is related to one or all of these. I've always thought of it as Scottish.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 18/08/2019 14:57

Ayla

BlackCatSleeping · 18/08/2019 14:58

Isn’t Ayla pronounced Ay-la while Isla is pronounced Eye-la.
