Opinions on the spelling. Of Iyla instead of isla

Not pregnant but came across this spelling. It’s more straight forward than isla /ails/Ayla.

What do you think

Everyone knows how to pronounce Isla

You’d think, right.
I know people with a daughter called Isla. They pronounce is Is-la. It is not a cultural name.

I don’t know them at all well so I don’t know if anyone has told them yet.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 18/08/2019 15:02

Isla reminds me of the song La Isla Bonita by Madonna.

Isla pronounced Ees-la

yourestandingonmyneck · 18/08/2019 17:21

Oh ffs. No, it's ridiculous.

CottonSock · 18/08/2019 17:24

I also read it as ly-la

KipperTheFrog · 18/08/2019 17:27

Iyla I would pronounce as Lylah.
Ila works if you don’t want the s, but Isla is perfectly straightforward and we’ll known.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 18/08/2019 17:52

Just stick to Isla.

If nothing else, think of the poor bloody teacher, having to remember the unusual spelling every time, and the child in the future saying 'No, it's spelt....'

Antonin · 18/08/2019 17:52

I misread it, to, but as Tyla!
Accept it , OP, English spelling and pronunciation are not logical and you won’t change anyone’s expectations by opting for another (simpler) spelling.
I’d pronounce Ayla Ay— La with a long A sound. Ayla and Isla are not interchangeable.
Orla is pronounced as it is spelled.

Southfox · 18/08/2019 18:01

If you're dyslexic why choose a name you struggle with? Hmm
I'm dyslexic so i really don't understand why you would make you life and your daughters life harder?

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 18/08/2019 18:53

The Ayla I know is pronounced Eye-luh.

Turkish. Meaning 'halo of moonlight', which is rather beautiful.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 18/08/2019 18:58

"Also why does the name have a s in it.
What would be the correct spelling if it wasn’t isla"

Because it's derived from the name of the island of Islay. Its already "correct".

LoonyLunaLoo · 18/08/2019 19:04

I worked with a child called Iyla. EVERYONE thought she was Lyla, it caused a lot of admin problems!

PuffHuffle5 · 18/08/2019 19:07

It’s not straight forward if no one uses that spelling - it just causes confusion. Your choice, but Isla is perfectly straightforward.

sandyfoot · 18/08/2019 19:22

Isla is the name of a river and glen in Scotland

nocoolnamesleft · 18/08/2019 19:30

Ila? Well, for starters, my brain read it as Lla, so tried to pronounce something vaguely Welsh...

Tyrotoxicity · 18/08/2019 19:36

I know one. I confess, I judge the hell out of the kid's parents.

mathanxiety · 18/08/2019 19:48

Go with Ayla if you prefer a name or spelling that make sense to you.

diddlediddle · 18/08/2019 20:27

Definitely don't choose the Ayla spelling for Isla if you're looking for simplicity. 😂 most people will say A La (I know the Turkish pronunciation is Isla but I also know children called Ayla pronounced A La)

If you want a phonetic spelling of Isla you'll have to call her Eye-Laa. Which is obviously madness.

Isla is in the top 10 names. It's well known. It's also exactly the same spelling and pronunciation as the beginning of the well known word Island. It's fine.

Fuiseog · 18/08/2019 20:36

Ila I would have pronounced ill-a, ill as in sick.

pikapikachu · 18/08/2019 20:55

Is Ayla not pronounced like Kayla but no K?

Feverslag · 19/08/2019 10:15

I’m dyslexic so try to spell names that are how it is pronounced but can now see how Iyla will cause confusion
Ok but the rest of us aren’t dyslexic so just spell names properly

whattodowith · 19/08/2019 16:40

Awful.

HoratioNightboy · 19/08/2019 19:12

As a PP said, the name is from a Scottish river (two, actually) although most people associate with the isle of Islay which is pronounced the same as Isla.

A common Scots spelling for the island on old maps was Yla, so this might suit you for a more phonetic version and would still be a genuine old form of the name.

Alternatively, it was known as Yula to the Norn-speaking inhabitants of the Hebrides, so this might be an idea for you too.
